Chapter 10: The Trap Hidden Inside The Trust
Marcus Bennett had spent years believing he was a businessman who could read people.
He built companies.
He negotiated deals.
He recognized risks before they became disasters.
But the one thing he never expected was that the biggest threat to his family would come from people sitting at his own dinner table.
Now, every conversation felt different.
Every memory had a shadow.
The family dinners.
The holidays.
The smiles.
All of it looked different after the truth started coming out.
Marcus sat in Daniel’s office, staring at the bank records spread across the desk.
The numbers were clear.
Money from Evelyn’s trust had been redirected through an account connected to Richard Cole’s company.
But there was something strange.
Something that bothered Marcus.
“Why didn’t they take everything?””
Daniel looked up.
“What do you mean?””
“If Nicole and Richard wanted the trust, why create such a complicated transfer?””
Daniel studied the documents.
“Because they needed Evelyn’s approval.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He tapped the paper.
“They needed something Evelyn had.””
Daniel leaned back.
Then slowly nodded.
“The handbag.””
Exactly.
The handbag wasn’t valuable because of the leather.
It wasn’t valuable because of the hidden compartment.
It was valuable because Evelyn had protected something inside it.
Something Nicole and Richard were afraid of.
Marcus looked at the old documents.
“My wife knew.””
Daniel nodded.
“She suspected something.””
“She knew Richard was involved.””
“Maybe.””
Marcus frowned.
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Daniel was quiet for a moment.
“Because she may have been protecting you.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Protecting me?””
“Think about it. Evelyn was sick. She knew her time was limited.””
Daniel pointed to the letter.
“She didn’t want her final months filled with fighting. She wanted evidence.””
Marcus looked away.
That sounded exactly like Evelyn.
She never reacted emotionally.
She planned.
She prepared.
She protected.
Meanwhile, Amara was back at school.
But nothing felt normal.
Everyone knew something had happened.
Rumors spread quickly.
Some people said Amara’s scholarship was taken away.
Others said there was a family dispute.
Amara ignored all of it.
For the first time, she realized something important.
People would always talk.
The only thing she could control was the truth.
During lunch, the scholarship committee contacted her.
She expected bad news.
Instead, the message changed everything.
They had reviewed the withdrawal request.
They confirmed Amara did not submit it.
Her application was restored.
The finalist position remained.
And there was an additional investigation into the attempted interference.
Amara read the email three times.
Then she smiled.
Not because she won.
Because someone finally believed her.
That evening, she showed Marcus.
He hugged her.
“I knew they would see the truth.””
Amara smiled.
“You sound like Mom.””
Marcus became quiet.
Then he said:
“She would be proud of you.””
The words meant more than any scholarship.
Later that night, Marcus received a call.
Private number.
He almost ignored it.
But something made him answer.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice whispered.
“Marcus.””
He froze.
“Who is this?””
“It’s someone who knows what Richard did.””
Marcus stood.
“Who?””
“I can’t tell you.””
“Then why call?””
A pause.
“Because you’re looking in the wrong place.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“You think Nicole and Richard started this.””
The voice became lower.
“They didn’t.””
Marcus felt cold.
“Who are you?””
The call ended.
He immediately called Daniel.
“Something happened.””
Within an hour, Daniel arrived.
Marcus explained everything.
Daniel looked concerned.
“This could be a trick.””
“I know.””
“But?””
Marcus looked toward the stairs.
“But whoever called knew about Richard.””
The next morning, they traced the phone number.
It belonged to a prepaid device.
No name.
No information.
But the timing was interesting.
Because an hour after the call, Richard sent Marcus a message.
We need to talk.
Alone.
Marcus showed Daniel.
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because he’s nervous.””
Marcus stared at the message.
“He knows we found something.””
“Yes.””
“So we meet.””
Daniel hesitated.
“Carefully.””
The meeting took place at a quiet café.
Richard arrived five minutes late.
He looked exhausted.
Not confident.
Not powerful.
Afraid.
Marcus noticed.
“You look worried.””
Richard forced a laugh.
“Do I?””
“Yes.””
Richard sat down.
For a few seconds, neither man spoke.
Then Richard said:
“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“I know exactly what I’m dealing with.””
Richard looked around.
“Nicole made mistakes.””
Marcus said nothing.
Interesting.
Richard immediately blamed Nicole.
Marcus continued watching.
“You’re trying to separate yourself.””
Richard looked offended.
“Because I’m telling the truth.””
“Then tell me everything.””
Richard hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“What were you looking for?””
Richard’s face changed.
“Excuse me?””
“The handbag.””
Silence.
Marcus leaned closer.
“You knew about the compartment.””
Richard looked away.
Finally, he whispered:
“Yes.””
Marcus felt anger rise.
“How?””
“Evelyn told me.””
The answer shocked him.
“What?””
Richard sighed.
“She didn’t trust me completely.””
“Clearly.””
Richard looked hurt.
But Marcus didn’t care.
“She came to me before she died.””
“Why?””
“She was scared.””
“Of you?””
Richard looked down.
“No.””
“Then who?””
Richard took a deep breath.
“Nicole.””
Marcus froze.
“What did she know?””
Richard looked up.
“She knew Nicole was trying to change the trust.””
“Why didn’t you stop her?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Because the answer was obvious.
Money.
Power.
Greed.
Marcus stood.
“You helped her.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The admission landed heavily.
“But I didn’t know how far she would go.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You helped someone steal from my daughter.””
Richard looked desperate.
“She promised me something.””
“What?””
“That if the trust was transferred, I would get access to the investment accounts.””
Marcus stared.
“So it was never just Nicole.””
“No.””
Richard looked broken.
“There was someone else.””
Marcus stopped.
“Who?””
Richard looked terrified.
“I can’t tell you.””
Marcus turned away.
“Then you’re still protecting them.””
Richard whispered:
“You don’t understand.””
Marcus looked back.
“Make me understand.””
Richard lowered his voice.
“Your wife discovered something about the company before she died.””
“What?””
“She found evidence that someone was stealing from Marcus Bennett Holdings.””
Marcus felt his blood run cold.
“Who?””
Richard looked at him.
“The person who helped Nicole.””
A long silence followed.
“Who?””
Richard finally answered.
And the name shocked Marcus more than anything he had heard before.
Because it wasn’t a stranger.
May you like
It was someone inside his own company.
Someone he trusted.
