Chapter 8: The Person Evelyn Never Trusted
Marcus stared at the name.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Amara watched his face carefully.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
“Who is it?””
Marcus slowly turned the paper around.
Amara looked down.
And her heart stopped.
The name written there belonged to someone she knew.
Someone she had trusted.
Someone who had been around her family for years.
“Daniel?””
The attorney looked shocked.
“That’s impossible.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You know this person?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Amara looked between them.
“Who?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then he said:
“Richard Cole.””
Amara’s eyebrows tightened.
“Dad’s business partner?””
Marcus nodded.
Richard had been Marcus’s closest friend for almost fifteen years.
They built their company together.
He attended family dinners.
He sent gifts when Amara graduated.
He even came to Evelyn’s funeral.
The idea that Evelyn suspected him felt impossible.
“She wrote his name?””
Marcus nodded.
“Why?””
Daniel picked up the letter.
“Let’s read everything before making assumptions.””
The letter continued.
Richard has access to information he should not have.
He knows too much about our finances.
Too much about Amara’s trust.
And too much about what I planned for my daughter.
Marcus looked up.
Daniel became pale.
“That’s serious.””
“What else?””
Marcus continued.
I do not believe Richard is acting alone.
The room went silent.
Amara felt a cold sensation.
“Not alone?””
Marcus read the next line.
Someone inside this family may be helping him.
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly every possibility became darker.
Nicole’s betrayal.
The stolen documents.
The forged signature.
The missing money.
Maybe they were pieces of something larger.
Daniel leaned back.
“Your mother was afraid of a conspiracy.””
Marcus shook his head.
“She would have told me.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Would she?””
The question hurt.
Marcus looked away.
Because he knew.
Evelyn had always protected people.
Even when protecting them meant carrying the burden alone.
Amara touched the letter.
“My mom didn’t trust anyone.””
Marcus looked at her.
“She trusted you.””
“She trusted me enough to leave this.””
Amara held the paper.
“But she was afraid you would ignore the signs.””
Marcus looked down.
Because that was the truth.
He had ignored them.
Not because he didn’t love Evelyn.
Because he didn’t want to believe anything was wrong.
Daniel gathered the documents.
“We need to investigate Richard.””
Marcus nodded.
“I’ll call him.””
“No.””
Daniel stopped him.
“Don’t tell him you know.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
“Because if Evelyn was right, he will destroy evidence.””
The words were frightening because they made sense.
That evening, Marcus invited Richard to dinner.
A normal dinner.
At least that was what Richard believed.
When he arrived, he smiled warmly.
“Marcus.””
They shook hands.
Richard looked at Amara.
“Hey, kiddo.””
Amara forced a smile.
She had known this man her entire life.
Now she wondered how much of him was real.
Richard sat down.
“So what’s the occasion?””
Marcus poured coffee.
“No occasion.””
Richard smiled.
“You never invite me over without a reason.””
Marcus studied him.
“Maybe I wanted to see an old friend.””
Richard laughed.
“Fair enough.””
But Amara noticed something.
Richard kept looking around.
Like he was searching for something.
Then his eyes landed on the handbag sitting on the shelf.
The damaged handbag.
His expression changed.
Only for a second.
But Marcus saw it.
“What?””
Richard looked away.
“Nothing.””
Marcus leaned back.
“You recognized it.””
Richard smiled.
“Evelyn’s bag?””
“Yes.””
“Of course.””
“Why?””
Richard shrugged.
“She carried it everywhere.””
Marcus watched him.
“Did you know there was a hidden compartment?””
Silence.
Small.
Almost invisible.
But it was there.
Richard recovered quickly.
“No.””
Marcus smiled slightly.
“Interesting.””
Richard laughed.
“Why?””
“Because I didn’t say what was hidden inside.””
Richard’s face changed.
And Marcus knew.
He knew.
Amara saw it too.
The person sitting at their table wasn’t surprised.
He was worried.
Richard stood suddenly.
“I should go.””
Marcus didn’t move.
“Already?””
“I have work.””
“At eight at night?””
Richard forced a smile.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Richard.””
The man stopped.
“Did Evelyn ever talk to you about the trust?””
Another pause.
“No.””
Too fast.
Too defensive.
Marcus nodded.
“Okay.””
Richard left ten minutes later.
The moment the door closed, Amara looked at her father.
“He knows.””
Marcus nodded.
“I think so.””
The next morning, Daniel called.
His voice sounded urgent.
“Marcus.””
“What happened?””
“I checked the original trust records.””
“And?””
“There’s a second attempted transfer.””
Marcus froze.
“When?””
“Two years ago.””
Amara looked at him.
“Two years ago?””
Daniel continued.
“And there’s something else.””
“What?””
“The person who submitted the paperwork.””
Marcus waited.
“Richard Cole.””
The truth hit harder than expected.
Because betrayal from Nicole was painful.
But Richard?
Richard was family.
And now Marcus understood something.
May you like
The attack on Amara’s future had started long before the destroyed dress.
The dress was only the moment they got caught.
