Chapter 13: The Man Who Ran From The Truth
Three weeks had passed since Amara stood on the scholarship stage.
Three weeks since her mother’s hidden letter changed everything.
Three weeks since Marcus learned that the people closest to him had been working together to hide a crime.
But one person was still missing.
Victor Hayes.
And as long as Victor was gone, the story wasn’t over.
Marcus sat in his office staring at the empty chair across from him.
That chair belonged to Victor.
For twelve years, Victor had sat there.
They had celebrated promotions there.
They had discussed business plans there.
They had talked about their families there.
Marcus once considered Victor a brother.
Now he wondered if he had ever known him at all.
Daniel walked into the office carrying a folder.
“We found something.””
Marcus immediately looked up.
“Victor?””
“Not exactly.””
Daniel placed the folder on the desk.
“A message.””
Marcus opened it.
Inside was a printed email.
Sent two days before Victor disappeared.
To Marcus.
The subject line was simple.
You need to know what Evelyn discovered.
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
He read the message.
Marcus,
You think I am the villain because that is what everyone wants you to believe.
But you are missing the bigger picture.
Evelyn found something years ago.
Something connected to your company.
Something connected to your family.
She was going to expose everything.
I tried to stop her.
But I was not the only one involved.
Marcus looked up.
“He’s blaming someone else.””
Daniel nodded.
“Maybe.””
“Or maybe he’s trying to confuse us.””
Daniel looked thoughtful.
“That’s possible.””
Marcus continued reading.
There is one person who knows the full truth.
Someone Evelyn trusted.
Someone who has been hiding information.
Find that person, and you will understand why everything happened.
The message ended there.
No name.
No location.
Nothing.
Marcus threw the paper onto the desk.
“He’s playing games.””
“Maybe.””
Daniel paused.
“But he’s also scared.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because if Victor was only worried about getting caught, he would run.””
Daniel pointed at the message.
“But he wanted you to know something.””
Marcus leaned back.
A dangerous thought entered his mind.
Victor wasn’t running away.
He was trying to lead them somewhere.
That night, Marcus showed Amara the message.
She read it carefully.
“Someone Evelyn trusted.””
Marcus nodded.
“Do you know who?””
Amara thought.
Her mother had many friends.
People from work.
People from charity events.
People from their community.
But one person kept coming back.
“Maybe Daniel knows.””
Marcus frowned.
“Daniel?””
“He worked with Mom.””
“He did.””
“But there was someone else.””
Amara looked at the handbag.
“Someone who helped her organize things.””
Marcus waited.
“Her old assistant.””
Marcus remembered.
“Rachel?””
Amara nodded.
Rachel Morgan had worked with Evelyn before her illness.
She handled schedules, documents, and appointments.
After Evelyn died, Rachel disappeared from their lives.
Marcus had assumed she moved on.
But now he wondered.
Why?
The next morning, Marcus found Rachel.
She lived quietly outside the city.
When Marcus arrived, she looked surprised.
But not shocked.
As if she had been expecting him.
“You finally came.””
Marcus stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel opened the door.
“I knew Evelyn’s secret would eventually come out.””
Marcus stared.
“You knew?””
Rachel looked down.
“Yes.””
Inside the house, Rachel brought out a box.
Old documents.
Letters.
Photos.
Everything connected to Evelyn.
Marcus felt overwhelmed.
“How long have you had this?””
“Since before she died.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Rachel looked at him sadly.
“Because Evelyn asked me not to.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“She was afraid.””
“Of Nicole?””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
“Richard?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
Rachel looked directly at him.
“Your father.””
Marcus felt like the room moved.
“My father?””
Rachel nodded.
“Evelyn discovered something about the Bennett family before she met you.””
Marcus stared.
“My family?””
Rachel opened a file.
“Your company didn’t begin the way you think.””
Marcus looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel placed a document on the table.
A business transfer agreement.
Old.
Very old.
“This was from twenty years ago.””
Marcus read it.
Then his face changed.
Because the document showed something impossible.
A hidden ownership agreement.
One that gave another person control over parts of the company.
“What is this?””
Rachel sighed.
“Your father made a deal before you took over.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That can’t be right.””
“Evelyn found proof.””
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because she was investigating.””
Rachel opened another folder.
“She believed your father made choices that affected the entire family.””
Marcus looked at the documents.
His entire understanding of his past began collapsing.
“My father was involved?””
Rachel nodded.
“But Evelyn never knew how far it went.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Then Victor’s message makes sense.””
Rachel nodded.
“Victor wasn’t the beginning.””
“He was a piece.””
The realization was terrifying.
The betrayal didn’t start with Nicole.
It didn’t start with Richard.
It started years earlier.
Before Amara was born.
Before Marcus understood the company he inherited.
Rachel handed him one final envelope.
“This was Evelyn’s last instruction.””
Marcus opened it.
Inside was a letter.
For Marcus.
Not Amara.
Not anyone else.
Marcus,
If you are reading this, then the truth has become too large to hide.
I need you to understand something.
The people who hurt us were not all motivated by greed.
Some were protecting secrets they were afraid to reveal.
Find out what your father left behind.
That is where this started.
Marcus lowered the letter.
For the first time, he realized something.
May you like
Evelyn wasn’t only protecting Amara.
She was trying to save him too.
