Chapter 11: The Enemy Standing Beside Them

Marcus didn’t sleep that night.

The name Richard gave him kept repeating in his mind.

Someone inside his company.

Someone who had access.

Someone who had been close enough to hide everything.

The person was named Victor Hayes.

Marcus had known Victor for twelve years.

Victor was his financial director.

The person responsible for reviewing company accounts.

The person Marcus trusted with millions of dollars.

And now Marcus had to consider the possibility that the man had been stealing from him.

The next morning, Marcus sat across from Daniel.

“We need proof.””

Daniel nodded.

“An accusation without evidence helps them.””

Marcus looked exhausted.

“Everyone I trusted was lying.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he knew there was truth in that statement.

Meanwhile, Amara continued preparing for the scholarship ceremony.

But now her focus had changed.

Before, she wanted the scholarship because it represented a future.

Now it represented something else.

Her mother believed in her.

And she refused to let anyone destroy that.

At home, Tiffany approached her.

“I need to tell you something.””

Amara looked up.

“What?””

Tiffany looked uncomfortable.

“About Richard.””

Amara waited.

“When Mom started working with him, I thought it was just about money.””

“And now?””

“Now I think she was scared.””

Amara frowned.

“Scared of what?””

Tiffany took out her phone.

“I found this.””

She showed Amara a picture.

A screenshot.

An old message.

From Nicole.

To Richard.

The message was short.

The transfer must happen before Marcus finds the evidence.

Amara’s eyes widened.

“Where did you get this?””

“Mom’s tablet.””

“You had access?””

Tiffany nodded.

“I was looking for proof.””

Amara studied her.

“Why?””

Tiffany looked away.

“Because I’m tired of defending someone who doesn’t care about me.””

The answer was painful.

Amara understood.

Sometimes betrayal hurt more when it came from family.

Marcus returned home that evening with Daniel.

They had discovered something.

Victor’s financial records showed unusual activity.

Money moved through several companies.

Small amounts.

Carefully hidden.

But enough to prove something.

And then they found the connection.

One of the companies belonged to Richard.

Marcus closed his eyes.

The betrayal was complete.

Nicole.

Richard.

Victor.

Three people.

One plan.

But there was still one question.

Why was Evelyn’s evidence so important?

Daniel finally found the answer.

A hidden file.

Saved under Evelyn’s name.

The file contained copies of company transactions.

And one document stood out.

A report showing millions missing from company accounts.

Marcus stared.

“She found this.””

Daniel nodded.

“And she was preparing to expose them.””

Amara looked at the screen.

“So they weren’t only after my trust.””

“No.””

Marcus’s voice was cold.

“They were afraid Evelyn would reveal everything.””

That was the moment everything made sense.

The handbag.

The hidden compartment.

The trust.

The scholarship sabotage.

All of it was connected.

They weren’t trying to steal Amara’s money.

They were trying to destroy Evelyn’s evidence.

Because if that evidence came out, they would lose everything.

Then Marcus received another message.

This time from Nicole.

We need to talk.

Marcus stared at it.

Daniel asked:

“What will you do?””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

Then replied.

Meet me.

But this time, you’re telling the truth.

When Marcus arrived home, Nicole was waiting.

She looked different.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Defeated.

“I know you found everything.””

Marcus didn’t respond.

Nicole looked down.

“I never wanted it to go this far.””

“That’s what everyone says after they get caught.””

She looked at him.

“You think I’m a monster.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He paused.

“I think you made choices.””

Nicole’s eyes filled.

“Evelyn had everything.””

Marcus stared.

“She had love.””

“She had money.””

“She had a family.””

Nicole’s voice cracked.

“I wanted something that was mine.””

Marcus looked at her.

“So you destroyed my daughter’s life?””

Nicole shook her head.

“No.””

“Then what?””

“I wanted control.””

The honesty surprised him.

Nicole continued.

“Because I knew once Evelyn was gone, I would always be compared to her.””

Marcus said nothing.

“And I hated that.””

A tear fell down Nicole’s face.

“But Richard convinced me there was a way to change everything.””

Marcus looked disgusted.

“You chose greed.””

Nicole whispered:

“Yes.””

For the first time, she admitted it.

No excuses.

No lies.

Just guilt.

Then she said something unexpected.

“But Victor was the one who planned everything.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Nicole looked at him.

“He approached Richard first.””

The room went silent.

“He knew about Evelyn’s investigation.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“How?””

Nicole shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

But Marcus already understood.

Someone else had been watching Evelyn.

May you like

Someone else knew what she discovered.

And that person was still hiding.
