Chapter 6: The Woman Who Wanted To Erase Evelyn
By the afternoon, Marcus had made a decision.
Nicole and Tiffany would stay in the house until everything was investigated.
But nothing would be hidden anymore.
No more excuses.
No more pretending.
He contacted the bank.
He contacted his attorney.
And he contacted the scholarship committee.
The truth had to come out.
Amara watched everything happen from the living room.
For years, she had dreamed of someone defending her.
She just never imagined it would happen after so much damage had already been done.
Tiffany sat quietly on the couch.
She looked different.
Smaller.
Less certain.
Amara almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
“You really hated me that much?””
Tiffany looked up.
“What?””
“Enough to destroy my mother’s bag?””
Tiffany looked down.
“I didn’t know about the compartment.””
Amara studied her.
“That’s not an answer.””
Tiffany sighed.
“I was angry.””
“Because of a scholarship?””
“Because of everything.””
Amara waited.
Tiffany looked toward the stairs.
“My whole life, my mom told me I had to compete with you.””
Amara frowned.
“I never competed with you.””
“I know.””
The answer surprised her.
Tiffany continued.
“That’s the worst part.””
She rubbed her hands together.
“You never even cared.””
Amara was silent.
Because maybe that was true.
She never hated Tiffany.
She was too busy surviving.
Tiffany whispered.
“When the scholarship list came out, Mom cried.””
Amara looked at her.
“She cried?””
“She said it proved everyone chose you.””
Amara shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
“But she believed it.””
Tiffany looked up.
“And then she told me she could fix it.””
A cold feeling moved through Amara.
“How?””
Tiffany didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
They both knew.
Later that evening, Marcus found another clue.
Hidden in Nicole’s desk.
A folder.
Inside were copies of Evelyn’s financial documents.
Bank statements.
Trust information.
Private records.
Things Nicole should never have had.
Marcus stared at them.
This wasn’t jealousy.
This was obsession.
He called Daniel again.
“There’s more.””
The attorney listened.
Then said:
“Marcus, you need to hear this carefully.””
“What?””
“If Nicole accessed Evelyn’s private documents after her death, there may be a larger legal issue.””
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
“What kind of issue?””
“Fraud.””
The word landed heavily.
Marcus closed the folder.
Then he saw something else.
A handwritten note.
Not from Nicole.
From Evelyn.
It was dated three weeks before she died.
Marcus recognized the handwriting immediately.
He read it.
Nicole has been asking strange questions.
About money.
About Amara.
About what happens if something happens to me.
Marcus stopped.
His heart sank.
There was more.
I don’t want to believe she would hurt us.
But something feels wrong.
If I am wrong, forgive me.
If I am right, please protect our daughter.
Marcus slowly lowered the paper.
Amara saw his face.
“What is it?””
He couldn’t speak for several seconds.
Then he handed her the note.
She read it.
And her hands began shaking.
Her mother knew.
She knew something was wrong before she died.
And she had been afraid.
Marcus walked to Amara and hugged her.
“I’m sorry.””
Amara cried against him.
Not because of the money.
Not because of the scholarship.
Because for the first time, she understood something.
Her mother had never stopped protecting her.
Even after she was gone.
Across the room, Nicole watched them.
And something in her expression changed.
She wasn’t angry anymore.
She was desperate.
“You don’t understand.””
Marcus looked at her.
“No.””
Nicole stepped forward.
“You don’t know what Evelyn was really like.””
“Enough.””
“She controlled everything.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You’re trying to rewrite history.””
Nicole’s voice rose.
“She made everyone feel like they weren’t good enough!””
Amara looked at her.
“And you think hurting me proves she was wrong?””
Nicole stopped.
Because she had no answer.
Marcus pointed toward the door.
“Until we know everything, you are done making decisions in this house.””
Nicole stared.
“You’re choosing her.””
Marcus looked at his daughter.
“I’m choosing the truth.””
That night, Amara returned to her bedroom.
The dress was still destroyed.
The handbag was still damaged.
But everything felt different.
Because the things Nicole and Tiffany tried to take from her were not what mattered.
Not the dress.
Not the scholarship.
Not even the money.
They had tried to erase her mother.
They had tried to erase the one person who loved Amara without conditions.
But they failed.
Because Evelyn had left behind proof.
A letter.
A trust.
A warning.
And now Marcus knew there was only one question left.
May you like
Why had Nicole been so desperate to find the hidden compartment?
And what else had she been hiding before Amara ever walked through that bedroom door?
