Chapter 7: The Secret Behind Denise’s Anger

Aaliyah arrived at Denise’s house twenty minutes early.

Not because she was nervous.

Because she wanted to be prepared.

There was a difference.

For years, she had walked into rooms like this hoping everyone else would approve of her.

She would rehearse conversations in her head.

She would carefully choose every word.

She would apologize even when she wasn’t wrong.

But that version of herself had disappeared the night those dishes shattered across the kitchen floor.

Now, she walked through Denise’s front door with her shoulders straight and her head held high.

Marcus followed behind her.

He looked at her quietly.

“You okay?””

Aaliyah nodded.

“Yes.””

But Marcus knew her well enough to see the truth.

She wasn’t relaxed.

She was ready.

And there was a difference.

Denise was sitting in the living room.

Alone.

That surprised Aaliyah.

She had expected another family meeting.

More witnesses.

More people waiting to judge.

Instead, there were only two cups of coffee on the table.

Denise looked older somehow.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like the anger she had carried for days had finally become too heavy.

“Aaliyah,” Denise said.

“Denise.””

The older woman gestured toward the chair.

“Please sit.””

Aaliyah sat across from her.

Marcus remained standing for a moment.

Denise looked at him.

“I need to speak with her alone.””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

Aaliyah glanced at him.

“It’s okay.””

“You sure?””

“Yes.””

Marcus nodded and walked toward the kitchen.

But before leaving, he gave Aaliyah a look.

A quiet message.

I’m here.

This time, she believed him.

The room stayed silent for several seconds.

Finally, Denise spoke.

“I owe you the truth.””

Aaliyah waited.

Denise folded her hands together.

“I was angry because you reminded me of myself.””

The statement caught Aaliyah off guard.

“What?””

Denise looked down.

“When I married Marcus’s father, I was twenty-three years old.””

Her voice softened.

“I was young. I had dreams. I wanted to finish school. I wanted a career.””

Aaliyah listened carefully.

“But everyone told me my job was to support my husband. To take care of the house. To keep the family together.””

Denise gave a small, humorless laugh.

“And I did.””

She looked around the room.

“I spent thirty years proving I was useful.””

Aaliyah’s expression changed slightly.

Because suddenly, she understood.

Not accepted.

Not excused.

But understood.

“You think that was love,” Aaliyah said quietly.

Denise looked at her.

“What?””

“You think sacrificing yourself was the price of being loved.””

Denise didn’t answer.

And that silence told Aaliyah everything.

“My mother taught me the same thing,” Denise admitted.

“She always said a woman who complained was selfish.””

Aaliyah looked down.

“That’s a painful thing to learn.””

“It was.””

Denise’s eyes became emotional.

“But then you came into this family.””

Aaliyah frowned.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

Denise nodded.

“You worked. You had goals. You spoke your mind. You expected Marcus to help you.””

She paused.

“And I hated that.””

The honesty shocked Aaliyah.

“Why?””

“Because part of me was jealous.””

The word seemed difficult for Denise to say.

“I saw you asking for things I never asked for.””

Aaliyah remained quiet.

“I saw Marcus treating you differently than my husband treated me.””

Denise swallowed.

“And instead of being happy for you, I felt angry.””

The room became quiet.

“That wasn’t fair,” Denise whispered.

No excuses.

No blame.

Just the truth.

Aaliyah studied her.

For the first time, she saw Denise as a woman.

Not just a mother-in-law.

Not just the person who hurt her.

A woman who had spent decades carrying wounds she never addressed.

But Aaliyah also knew something important.

Pain explained behavior.

It did not excuse it.

“I’m sorry you went through that,” Aaliyah said.

Denise nodded.

“But I need you to understand something too.””

Aaliyah leaned forward.

“What?””

“I can understand why you treated me that way.””

She paused.

“But I cannot accept being treated that way.””

Denise looked at her.

“I know.””

“I’m not asking you to become a different person overnight.””

Aaliyah continued.

“But I need respect.””

Denise nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

Those words felt strange.

Not because they were impossible.

Because Aaliyah never expected to hear them.

Then Denise sighed.

“There’s something else.””

Aaliyah waited.

“The rumors.””

Aaliyah’s expression hardened slightly.

“What about them?””

Denise looked uncomfortable.

“I didn’t start them.””

“I didn’t say you did.””

“But I didn’t stop them either.””

That confession surprised her.

Denise looked ashamed.

“When my sister called, she only knew one version of the story.””

“The version where I attacked you.””

“Yes.””

“And you let her believe that?””

Denise looked away.

“I was embarrassed.””

Aaliyah nodded slowly.

“So protecting your image mattered more than protecting mine.””

Denise closed her eyes.

“I know.””

That answer hurt because it was honest.

“I was wrong.””

Aaliyah looked at her.

“You need to tell them the truth.””

Denise nodded.

“I will.””

The conversation continued for another hour.

Not perfectly.

Not magically.

There were still painful moments.

There were still things they needed to work through.

But when Aaliyah finally stood to leave, something felt different.

Not fixed.

But different.

At the door, Denise stopped her.

“Aaliyah.””

She turned.

“I want to say something.””

Aaliyah waited.

“I was wrong about you.””

The words were simple.

But they carried years of tension behind them.

“You are not disrespectful.””

Denise took a breath.

“You are strong.””

Aaliyah nodded.

“Thank you.””

As she walked toward the car, Marcus looked at her.

“How did it go?””

Aaliyah looked back at Denise’s house.

“She told me the truth.””

Marcus waited.

“And?””

May you like

Aaliyah smiled faintly.

“I told her mine.””
