Chapter 3: The Family Meeting

Three days later, Marcus showed up at Aaliyah’s apartment.

She almost didn’t open the door.

But when she saw his face through the window, she knew he wasn’t leaving.

He looked different.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Just tired.

“Aaliyah.””

She opened the door but didn’t invite him in.

“What do you want?””

Marcus swallowed.

“I want to fix this.””

She studied him.

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

“Or do you want me to come back so everyone can stop being uncomfortable?””

His face changed.

Because he knew she had a point.

“I talked to my mom.””

“And?””

“She thinks she was misunderstood.””

Aaliyah almost smiled.

Of course.

“She always is.””

Marcus looked away.

“She said things she shouldn’t have.””

“That’s not an apology.””

“I know.””

Aaliyah crossed her arms.

“And what about you?””

Marcus looked at her.

“What about me?””

“What do you think you did wrong?””

The question seemed harder for him than she expected.

He opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Looked down.

Finally, he whispered:

“I let it happen.””

Aaliyah felt something shift.

Because that was the first honest thing he had said.

“You did.””

“I thought I was keeping peace.””

“No,” she replied.

“You were keeping yourself comfortable.””

Marcus looked hurt.

But he didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

“I should have helped you.””

“Yes.””

“I should have told my mom to stop.””

“Yes.””

“I should have noticed how much you were carrying.””

Aaliyah looked away.

Those words were the ones she had wanted to hear for years.

But hearing them now didn’t erase everything.

“I don’t know if I can just come back and pretend nothing happened.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“I understand.””

That surprised her.

“You do?””

“Yes.””

He took a breath.

“My mom wants everyone over tonight.””

Aaliyah frowned.

“Why?””

“She wants to talk.””

Aaliyah almost refused immediately.

Then she thought about it.

Maybe she needed to hear what Denise had to say.

Maybe she needed to finally stop avoiding the conversation.

“Fine,” she said.

Marcus looked relieved.

“But I’m not going there to apologize.””

His expression became serious.

“I know.””

“And I’m not going there to be attacked.””

“I won’t let that happen.””

Aaliyah looked at him.

A simple sentence.

A sentence she had wanted him to say a hundred times.

But this time, she needed actions.

Not words.

That evening, Aaliyah walked back into the house where everything had changed.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

The same dining table.

But she was different.

Everyone was already waiting.

Denise sat at the head of the table.

Her expression was cold.

The moment Aaliyah entered, the room became silent.

Then Denise spoke.

“I hope you came here ready to admit what you did.””

Aaliyah pulled out a chair.

She sat down calmly.

“No.””

Everyone froze.

Denise narrowed her eyes.

“No?””

Aaliyah looked directly at her.

“I came here ready to tell the truth.””

And for the first time, nobody laughed.

Nobody interrupted.

Nobody dismissed her.

Because everyone in that room finally realized something.

The woman they thought they could control had found her voice.

And she was never going to lose it again.
