Chapter 11: The Betrayal Hidden in Plain Sight

The missing contract became the center of everyone’s attention.

Without it, they couldn’t determine whether Marcus was actually responsible for the debt.

Without it, they couldn’t understand what his father had agreed to years earlier.

And without it, they were left guessing.

Aaliyah hated guessing.

Guessing created fear.

Fear created mistakes.

And mistakes were something they could no longer afford.

Denise searched every cabinet in her office.

Every drawer.

Every storage box.

Nothing.

“I know it was here,” she said.

Marcus stood beside the desk.

“Mom, when was the last time you saw it?””

Denise thought.

“About two years ago.””

Aaliyah looked at her.

“Who had access to this room?””

Denise hesitated.

The hesitation was small.

But everyone noticed.

“Mom.””

Denise sat down.

“Jordan.””

Marcus frowned.

“My brother?””

“He helped me organize documents after I moved some things.””

Aaliyah exchanged a glance with Marcus.

Neither wanted to jump to conclusions.

But the possibility was there.

Later that afternoon, Marcus called Jordan.

“Can you come over?””

Jordan immediately sounded defensive.

“Why?””

“Because we need to talk.””

About an hour later, Jordan arrived.

He looked nervous.

Too nervous.

Aaliyah noticed immediately.

“Something is wrong,” she whispered to Marcus.

“I know.””

They sat in the living room.

Marcus placed the empty folder on the table.

“Do you know anything about this?””

Jordan looked at it.

His face changed.

Just for a second.

But enough.

Marcus saw it.

“Jordan.””

His brother sighed.

“I knew this would happen eventually.””

Everyone froze.

“Knew what?””

Jordan looked down.

“I took the contract.””

Marcus stood.

“What?””

“Wait.””

Jordan raised his hands.

“I didn’t steal it.””

“Then what did you do?””

Jordan looked ashamed.

“I borrowed it.””

Aaliyah stared.

“Why?””

Jordan didn’t answer.

Marcus’s voice became colder.

“Why?””

“Because I needed information.””

“What information?””

Jordan swallowed.

“My business.””

The room went silent.

Jordan explained.

After their father died, he had started a small company.

It struggled.

He had borrowed money.

More than he could repay.

And when he discovered the old contract, he wondered if there was anything valuable hidden inside.

Something that could help him.

Something that could save him.

“You put our family at risk to save yourself?”” Marcus asked.

Jordan looked hurt.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Marcus’s anger was controlled.

Which somehow made it worse.

“You didn’t tell anyone.””

“I was scared.””

Everyone had said that word.

Scared.

Aaliyah realized something.

This family was built on fear.

Fear of failure.

Fear of judgment.

Fear of looking weak.

Everyone hid things until the secrets became heavier than the truth.

“Where is the contract now?”” Marcus asked.

Jordan looked away.

“I don’t have it.””

“What do you mean?””

“I gave it to someone.””

Aaliyah’s stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Jordan hesitated.

Then said:

“The business partner’s son.””

Marcus went silent.

“What?””

Jordan looked desperate.

“I thought he could explain what the contract meant.””

“You gave a family document to someone outside the family?””

“I was trying to help!””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You were trying to help yourself.””

The words hurt Jordan.

Because they were true.

Then Denise spoke.

“Who is his son?””

Jordan looked at her.

“Ethan.””

The name made Denise freeze.

Aaliyah noticed.

“Do you know him?””

Denise slowly nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Denise looked terrified.

“He was involved with your father’s company.””

Marcus frowned.

“So?””

Denise whispered:

“He was the last person to see your father alive.””

The room went completely silent.

“What does that mean?”” Marcus asked.

Denise looked at the three of them.

“I never told you because I didn’t want to reopen old wounds.””

Aaliyah felt a chill.

“What happened?””

Denise took a deep breath.

“The night your father died…”

She paused.

“He and Ethan had an argument.””

Marcus stared.

“About what?””

Denise looked at the missing folder.

“Money.””

Nobody spoke.

Suddenly, this wasn’t just about debt.

It wasn’t just about a contract.

There was history.

There were secrets.

May you like

And maybe…

There was someone who had been hiding the truth for years.
