Chapter 12: The Truth Beneath the Lies
Marcus didn’t sleep that night.
Neither did Aaliyah.
The information about his father changed everything.
For years, Marcus believed his father had died peacefully.
A heart attack.
A tragic but natural ending.
Now, questions surrounded the final days of his life.
And questions were dangerous.
Because once they started, they were impossible to stop.
At sunrise, Marcus was already dressed.
Aaliyah found him sitting in the living room.
“You’re going to find Ethan.””
It wasn’t a question.
Marcus nodded.
“I need answers.””
“I know.””
She sat beside him.
“But you need to be careful.””
He looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because when people hide things for years, they usually don’t want the truth found.””
Marcus looked away.
“I keep thinking about all the things my family didn’t tell me.””
Aaliyah understood.
“It hurts.””
“Yes.””
He sighed.
“I thought my family trusted me.””
Aaliyah took his hand.
“They do.””
“Then why hide everything?””
She looked at him.
“Because sometimes people confuse protecting someone with controlling what they know.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
That was exactly what his family had done.
Not because they didn’t love him.
Because they were afraid.
Later that day, Marcus and Aaliyah met Ethan at a quiet restaurant.
Ethan was older than Marcus expected.
Calm.
Confident.
The kind of person who seemed like he always knew more than he said.
When Marcus mentioned the contract, Ethan smiled slightly.
“I wondered when someone would finally ask.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
Ethan took a sip of water.
“Years.””
Aaliyah watched him carefully.
“Why didn’t you say anything?””
Ethan looked at her.
“Because nobody wanted the truth.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“That’s not your decision.””
“No.””
Ethan agreed.
“But it was reality.””
He reached into his briefcase.
And placed a folder on the table.
Marcus stared.
“The contract.””
Ethan nodded.
“I kept it because I knew eventually someone would need it.””
Marcus opened it.
The pages were old.
But intact.
He read through them quickly.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
Aaliyah asked.
Marcus looked up.
“This doesn’t say my father was responsible for the debt.””
Ethan nodded.
“Because he wasn’t.””
Silence.
“Then why did everyone think he was?””
Ethan looked at Marcus.
“Because someone changed the story.””
The words were heavy.
“Who?””
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Aaliyah.
Then Marcus.
“Are you sure you want to know?””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.””
Ethan pushed another document across the table.
“This is the original agreement.””
Marcus read it.
His face slowly changed.
Aaliyah leaned closer.
“What does it say?””
Marcus looked at her.
“It says the debt was transferred.””
“To who?””
Marcus looked back at the paper.
Then whispered:
“My uncle.””
Aaliyah froze.
“Your father’s brother?””
Marcus nodded.
Ethan continued.
“Your uncle changed the documents after your father became sick.””
“Why?””
“Because your father found out.””
“Found out what?””
Ethan looked serious.
“That the company was being drained from the inside.””
The room became silent.
Marcus felt like the ground beneath him was moving.
His entire understanding of his family was collapsing.
“My uncle betrayed him.””
Ethan nodded.
“And your mother covered it up.””
Marcus looked away.
Pain.
Anger.
Confusion.
Everything at once.
Aaliyah reached for his hand.
But before she could say anything, Ethan spoke again.
“There’s one more thing.””
Marcus looked up.
“What?””
Ethan’s expression became darker.
“Your mother wasn’t the only person who knew.””
Aaliyah felt a chill.
“Who else?””
Ethan looked directly at Marcus.
“Your brother.””
Marcus froze.
“Jordan?””
Ethan nodded.
“He knew more than he admitted.””
And suddenly, the family problem wasn’t just about old secrets.
It wasn’t just about money.
It was about betrayal.
And Marcus had to decide whether protecting his family was still worth destroying himself.
Because sometimes…

The hardest truth to accept was not that someone lied.
It was discovering who was willing to lie to you.
