Chapter 6: The Story They Told Without Her

By Monday morning, Aaliyah knew something was wrong.

People were acting differently.

Not everyone.

But enough.

A coworker who normally chatted with her suddenly became quiet.

A neighbor who usually waved looked away.

Even Marcus seemed distracted.

Finally, during lunch, Jasmine noticed.

“Okay,” Jasmine said.

“Something happened.””

Aaliyah looked up.

“What?””

“You’ve been staring at your phone for ten minutes.””

Aaliyah sighed.

“I think Marcus’s family is talking about me.””

Jasmine frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Aaliyah showed her the messages.

Some were subtle.

Hope everything is okay with your marriage.

Others were worse.

Sometimes people don’t appreciate what they have until they lose it.

Jasmine shook her head.

“Oh, they’re making you the villain.””

Aaliyah didn’t answer.

Because that was exactly what it felt like.

That evening, Marcus came home looking angry.

“What happened?”” Aaliyah asked.

He dropped his keys on the counter.

“My mom’s sister called me.””

Aaliyah froze.

“And?””

“She said you embarrassed our family.””

Aaliyah closed her eyes.

Of course.

“They’re still talking about it.””

Marcus nodded.

“She told people you attacked my mother.””

Aaliyah stared at him.

“Did she tell them why?””

“No.””

There it was.

The part that hurt.

The missing piece.

The reason nobody understood.

People loved simple stories.

A woman breaking dishes was easy to judge.

A woman breaking after years of being ignored was harder.

“She made me look crazy,” Aaliyah whispered.

Marcus stepped closer.

“I know.””

“No, Marcus.””

She looked at him.

“Do you?””

Her voice cracked.

“Because this is what happens when nobody listens until someone finally breaks.””

Marcus had no answer.

Aaliyah sat down.

“I spent years being quiet.””

She looked exhausted.

“And the one time I wasn’t quiet, suddenly everyone noticed.””

Marcus sat beside her.

“I’m sorry.””

She believed he meant it.

But then his phone buzzed.

He looked at it.

A message.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Aaliyah watched him.

“Who?””

Marcus hesitated.

“My mom.””

“What does she want?””

He read the message.

Then slowly looked at Aaliyah.

“She wants to meet you.””

Aaliyah felt uneasy.

“Why?””

Marcus swallowed.

“She says she wants to tell you something.””

Aaliyah looked toward the window.

The city lights of Atlanta reflected across the glass.

A few months ago, she would have agreed immediately.

She would have gone.

She would have smiled.

She would have tried to fix everything.

But that woman was gone.

Now, she knew her worth.

“Okay,” Aaliyah said.

Marcus looked surprised.

“You’ll go?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked at him.

“Because I’m tired of people telling my story for me.””

And Marcus realized something.

This time, Aaliyah wasn’t walking into Denise’s house as the daughter-in-law who wanted acceptance.

She was walking in as a woman who finally understood her own power.

And whatever Denise wanted to say…

May you like

Aaliyah was ready to hear it.

But she was also ready to answer.
