Chapter 7: The Name Hidden in Elena’s Final Message

Daniel kept the phone against his ear long after the call ended.

The silence on the other side was gone.

But the fear it left behind remained.

He stared at the dark screen, waiting for it to light up again, waiting for Renata to call back and explain what she meant.

She never did.

That somehow made it worse.

Because Daniel knew Renata.

Or at least he thought he did.

She was not someone who made careless statements. She chose every word carefully. Every sentence had a purpose. Every emotion had a reason.

So when she said Elena was protecting him from the person who helped her die, Daniel believed one thing.

She knew something.

Something that could destroy everything.

"Mr. Daniel?""

Detective Hill's voice pulled him back.

Daniel looked up.

The detective was standing near the staircase, watching him carefully.

"What did she say?""

Daniel hesitated.

He had spent years being a man who solved problems alone.

He built his company alone.

Raised Sofia alone.

Carried grief alone.

But now he realized something painful.

Being alone was exactly how people like Renata won.

"She said Elena wasn't protecting me from her.""

Detective Hill waited.

"She said Elena was protecting me from the person who helped her die.""

The detective's expression changed slightly.

"Did she mention a name?""

"No.""

"Did she sound scared?""

Daniel thought about it.

"No.""

That was the part that bothered him.

Renata hadn't sounded scared.

She had sounded confident.

Like someone who knew the truth was on her side.

Detective Hill looked at the burned document again.

"Then we need to find out what was on this.""

Daniel nodded.

"I want everything connected to Elena's accident.""

"We'll request the original investigation files.""

"Not just the official files.""

The detective looked at him.

"What do you mean?""

Daniel walked toward the desk where Elena's photograph sat.

"I mean everything that was ignored.""

The detective studied him.

"You believe something was missed.""

"I believe someone wanted something missed.""

The next morning, Daniel went to the old storage building behind the property.

It was where he kept things he couldn't bring himself to throw away.

Elena's boxes.

Old clothes.

Books.

Letters.

Memories.

For years, he had avoided opening them.

Because grief was strange.

People thought the hardest part was losing someone.

It wasn't.

The hardest part was continuing to live in a world where that person should have been.

Every object became a reminder.

Every room became a question.

But now Daniel wasn't searching for memories.

He was searching for answers.

Dolores followed him.

"You don't have to do this alone.""

Daniel looked at her.

"You already helped more than you know.""

She shook her head.

"No.""

Her voice softened.

"I should have helped sooner.""

Daniel didn't answer.

Because she was right.

But he also knew fear could make good people stay quiet.

Inside the storage room, Daniel opened Elena's boxes one by one.

Old journals.

Family photographs.

Medical records.

Then Dolores found something.

A small leather notebook.

"This wasn't here before.""

Daniel took it.

The cover was worn.

Inside were Elena's handwritten notes.

Most were ordinary.

Shopping lists.

Ideas for Sofia's birthday.

Random thoughts.

Then he found a page that made him stop.

The handwriting changed.

The letters were pressed harder.

Almost like Elena was writing quickly.

"Daniel has to know the truth.""

Below that:

"But I don't know who I can trust anymore.""

Daniel's fingers tightened.

He turned the page.

Another sentence.

"Renata is not working alone.""

The room became silent.

Dolores looked at him.

"Not alone?""

Daniel kept reading.

Elena had written names.

Some crossed out.

Some circled.

And one name appeared several times.

A name Daniel recognized.

A name he never expected.

"Thomas.""

Dolores frowned.

"Thomas?""

Daniel nodded slowly.

Thomas Vale.

His oldest business partner.

His best friend.

The man who had stood beside him after Elena's death.

The man who had helped him manage everything when Daniel couldn't function.

The man who had told him:

"Focus on Sofia. I'll handle the rest.""

Daniel stepped back.

"No.""

Dolores looked worried.

"You know him?""

"I've known him for twenty years.""

The realization came slowly.

But once it arrived, it was impossible to ignore.

Thomas had been there during every important moment.

Including the weeks before Elena died.

Including the aftermath.

Including the investigation.

Daniel suddenly remembered something.

A conversation.

One he hadn't thought about in years.

The day after Elena's funeral, Thomas had said:

"Daniel, you need to stop looking backward.""

At the time, Daniel thought it was kindness.

Now it sounded different.

Like a warning.

His phone rang.

Detective Hill.

Daniel answered.

"We found something.""

"What?""

"The accident report has inconsistencies.""

Daniel's heart raced.

"What kind?""

"The original vehicle inspection was replaced.""

"Replaced?""

"Yes. The file contains a second version.""

Daniel looked at Elena's notebook.

At Thomas's name.

"Who signed the replacement?""

A pause.

Then:

"Thomas Vale.""

May you like

The room went cold.

Because suddenly, the person who had helped Daniel survive Elena's death might have been the person who knew exactly why she died.
