Chapter 3: The Letter Hidden Beneath the Floor
The locked room was at the end of the upstairs hallway.
Daniel had walked past it hundreds of times.
That was the part that disturbed him most.
A secret had been sitting inside his own house.
A few steps away from his bedroom.
A few steps away from Sofia.
And he never knew.
Behind him, Renata followed.
Not because she was calm.
Because she was desperate.
"Daniel, you are making a mistake.""
He didn't answer.
"You are destroying our marriage because of something a frightened child said.""
Still nothing.
"Daniel.""
He stopped at the door.
Then looked at her.
"Do you know what hurts the most?""
Renata said nothing.
"I spent years thinking I failed Elena.""
Her expression changed.
"Daniel...""
"I thought maybe I wasn't there enough. Maybe I worked too much. Maybe I should have noticed something before the accident.""
His hand tightened around the doorknob.
"But now I'm wondering if I failed because I trusted the wrong person.""
For the first time, Renata looked afraid.
The door opened.
Inside was not what Daniel expected.
There were boxes.
Old photographs.
Documents.
And memories.
His memories.
Elena's memories.
Sofia's memories.
Things that should have been kept safe.
Not hidden.
Daniel stepped inside.
On the table was a photo album.
He opened it.
The first page contained pictures of Elena.
But underneath them were notes.
Handwritten.
Not Elena's handwriting.
Renata's.
Daniel picked up the pages.
His face changed as he read.
"She was planning to leave.""
He looked at Renata.
"What is this?""
She didn't answer.
He continued reading.
"Elena knew too much.""
His breathing became heavier.
"What does that mean?""
Renata moved closer.
"Daniel, listen to me.""
"No.""
His voice was quiet.
But final.
"You listen to me.""
He held up the papers.
"Why did you write this?""
Renata's silence was louder than any confession.
Then Sofia appeared at the doorway.
Dolores had brought her upstairs, but the little girl had followed when she heard voices.
"Daddy?""
Daniel immediately lowered the papers.
He didn't want her seeing more pain.
But Sofia looked past him.
At something on the floor.
"Daddy...""
She pointed.
"There.""
Everyone looked.
A small envelope was partially hidden beneath the edge of the wooden floorboard.
Daniel frowned.
"Was that there before?""
Renata suddenly moved.
Too quickly.
Everyone noticed.
Daniel reached it first.
The envelope was old.
Dust covered the surface.
But one thing was clear.
The name written on it.
Elena.
His hands shook.
Inside was a letter.
Only a few lines.
But enough to change everything.
Daniel read silently.
Then again.
Then a third time.
Because his mind refused to accept the words.
Sofia watched him.
"Daddy?""
He looked up.
His face was pale.
"What does it say?"" Dolores asked.
Daniel couldn't speak immediately.
Finally, he whispered:
"Elena wrote this the day before she died.""
Renata closed her eyes.
The secret she had buried was no longer buried.
Daniel continued reading.
And then he reached the sentence that made the entire room feel colder.
The sentence that would never leave his mind.
"If anything happens to me, Daniel, do not trust Renata.""
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Except Sofia.
The little girl stepped closer to her father.
And in the quiet room, she finally finished the sentence she had been trying to say all along.
"Mommy knew.""
Daniel looked at his daughter.
"She knew what?""
Sofia looked at Renata.
Then whispered:
"She knew Renata was going to hurt her.""
May you like
And this time...
Renata had no explanation.
