Chapter 11: The Witness Who Was Supposed to Stay Silent
Thomas Vale did not answer his phone.
Not once.
Not twice.
Not ten times.
Daniel stopped calling after the tenth attempt.
Because the silence itself had become an answer.
Thomas was avoiding him.
The man who had spent twenty years claiming to be family was now hiding.
And Daniel knew why.
People didn't disappear when they had nothing to hide.
Detective Hill traced Thomas's last known location.
An office building downtown.
Daniel went there immediately.
"I need you to understand something," Hill said as they entered the building.
"What?""
"If Thomas is involved, we need to be careful.""
Daniel looked at him.
"I trusted him with my life.""
Hill nodded.
"That doesn't mean he won't hurt you.""
The office was empty.
Lights off.
Computers removed.
Drawers open.
Someone had cleaned the place quickly.
Too quickly.
Daniel walked inside.
On the desk was one thing.
A photograph.
Elena.
Thomas.
And another person.
The same stranger from the first photograph.
But this time Daniel recognized him.
His name was Victor Hale.
A former investigator.
Someone who had worked on Elena's accident.
Daniel picked up the photo.
"Why would Thomas have this?""
Detective Hill examined it.
"Because he wasn't investigating alone.""
A sound came from the hallway.
They turned.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Nervous.
"I know where Thomas went.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Who are you?""
"My name is Clara.""
She looked at the photograph.
"Elena trusted me.""
Daniel stared.
"How?""
Clara took a breath.
"I worked with her.""
"On what?""
"Finding the truth.""
The words were becoming familiar.
Everyone had a hidden role.
Everyone had known something.
Everyone had waited.
Except him.
"What truth?""
Clara looked around.
Then lowered her voice.
"Renata wasn't the person Elena was investigating.""
Daniel frowned.
"Then who was?""
Clara looked directly at him.
"Thomas.""
The answer hurt more than he expected.
Because a part of him still wanted Thomas to be innocent.
Even after everything.
"Why?""
Clara hesitated.
"Because Thomas was protecting someone.""
"Who?""
She looked afraid.
"His sister.""
Daniel waited.
"Renata.""
The room went silent.
The pieces finally moved.
Renata and Thomas.
Connected.
Not strangers.
Not accidental.
Family.
"You're saying they're related?""
Clara nodded.
"They changed their names years ago.""
Daniel felt sick.
"Why?""
"Because of Lily Hart.""
Detective Hill stepped closer.
"Explain.""
Clara looked at both men.
"Years ago, Renata was investigated after several children from a foundation disappeared.""
"And Thomas?""
"He helped cover it.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
The betrayal was almost impossible to process.
His friend.
His partner.
The person he trusted.
Had been protecting the person who destroyed his family.
"Where is Thomas now?""
Clara looked down.
"I don't know.""
"You're lying.""
She shook her head.
"No.""
Then she whispered:
"But I know where he will go.""
"Where?""
"To the place where Elena died.""
Daniel froze.
The accident site.
The road where his wife had supposedly lost control.
The road he had avoided ever since.
Detective Hill immediately called for backup.
But Daniel was already moving.
Because after two years of questions...
He was finally going back to the place where everything began.
The road looked exactly the same.
That was the worst part.
The trees.
The curves.
The old fence.
Everything looked ordinary.
Too ordinary.
Daniel stood where Elena's car had been found.
He imagined her here.
Alone.
Scared.
Trying to escape something.
Or someone.
Thomas was there.
Standing near the edge of the road.
Waiting.
"You knew I would come.""
Thomas didn't turn.
"Yes.""
Daniel walked closer.
"Why?""
Thomas looked older than he had the day before.
Broken.
"I wanted you to know the truth.""
"No.""
Daniel's voice hardened.
"You wanted to control when I learned it.""
Thomas looked down.
"You don't understand what happened.""
"Then explain.""
Thomas turned.
His eyes were filled with regret.
"Elena found out Renata was connected to Lily.""
Daniel waited.
"She planned to expose her.""
"Why didn't she?""
"Because she discovered I knew.""
The confession landed.
Daniel stared.
"You knew.""
Thomas nodded.
"I found out years earlier.""
"And you protected her?""
"No.""
Thomas shook his head.
"I protected Elena.""
Daniel didn't understand.
"What?""
Thomas looked toward the road.
"Because Elena wasn't killed by Renata.""
A pause.
Then:
"She was killed by someone who wanted Renata to stay silent.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Who?""
Thomas looked at him.
And said the one name Daniel never expected.
"Your father.""
Daniel froze.
"My father died ten years ago.""
Thomas nodded.
"I know.""
May you like
The wind moved through the trees.
And suddenly the past became even darker.
