Chapter 14: The Woman Who Wanted Everyone to Forget

Renata chose the place carefully.

That was what Daniel realized first.

She never acted randomly.

Every move had a reason.

Every disappearance.

Every secret.

Every lie.

She was always ten steps ahead.

The location she sent them was an abandoned building outside the city.

A place that had once belonged to the foundation where she worked years earlier.

The place where Lily Hart disappeared.

Daniel stood outside the building with Detective Hill, Thomas, and Ethan.

Nobody trusted anyone.

Not completely.

But they had one goal.

Find Renata.

Find the truth.

Bring Sofia home safely.

Because Daniel had made one mistake already.

He had allowed his daughter to live in fear.

He would not make another.

Inside the building, the air smelled old and empty.

The walls were covered with peeling paint.

Rooms that once held children's activities now looked abandoned.

Forgotten.

Like the people connected to them.

Then Daniel saw something.

A drawing on the wall.

A child's drawing.

A house.

A family.

And beneath it:

"I want to go home.""

His heart tightened.

"Lily.""

Thomas looked at him.

"Yes.""

They moved deeper inside.

Then they heard footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Renata stepped from the shadows.

She looked different.

Not because of her clothes.

Because she no longer needed the mask.

The kind woman.

The grieving partner.

The helpful stepmother.

Gone.

"You all look disappointed.""

Daniel stared.

"Where is Sofia?""

Renata smiled.

"Always your first question.""

"Where is she?""

"Safe.""

Daniel didn't believe her.

"Bring her to me.""

Renata looked at Thomas.

"You betrayed me.""

Thomas shook his head.

"No.""

"You were supposed to protect me.""

"I was supposed to protect the truth.""

Renata laughed.

"Truth.""

She looked around.

"Everyone here loves that word.""

She turned toward Daniel.

"But nobody wants to admit what truth really is.""

"Tell me.""

Her smile faded.

"Elena was not innocent.""

Daniel felt anger rise.

"Don't.""

"No?""

Renata stepped closer.

"Your perfect Elena discovered things she shouldn't have.""

"About you?""

"About everyone.""

Daniel stared.

"Then why did she trust you?""

Renata's expression changed.

For the first time, something real appeared.

Pain.

"Because she was the only person who saw me as human.""

Nobody expected that.

Not Daniel.

Not Thomas.

Not Ethan.

Renata continued.

"I was not born a monster.""

Her voice became quieter.

"I became one because every person who promised to help me eventually used me.""

Daniel looked at her.

"That doesn't excuse what you did.""

"No.""

Renata nodded.

"It doesn't.""

A strange honesty.

Almost worse than a lie.

"Then why?""

Daniel asked.

"Why hurt Elena?""

Renata looked down.

"Because Elena found out about Lily.""

The room became still.

"What happened to Lily?""

Renata closed her eyes.

"She survived.""

Daniel froze.

"What?""

"Everyone thought she disappeared.""

Renata looked toward the hallway.

"But someone saved her.""

"Who?""

Renata looked at Thomas.

"Me.""

Thomas went silent.

Daniel stared.

Nothing made sense.

"You expect me to believe you?""

"I don't care what you believe.""

Renata looked at him.

"I only care that Sofia knows the truth.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"What truth?""

Renata reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small envelope.

"Elena left this for Sofia.""

Daniel stepped forward.

Renata held it back.

"After everything, you still think you can control the story.""

Daniel stopped.

"Give me the letter.""

"No.""

She looked at him.

"Not until you understand.""

Then the lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the building.

A sound.

A struggle.

Someone moved.

A gunshot echoed.

When emergency lights came on, Renata was gone.

And Thomas was on the floor.

Bleeding.

Daniel rushed to him.

"Who did this?""

Thomas grabbed his arm.

His voice barely audible.

"Not Renata.""

Daniel froze.

"Then who?""

Thomas looked toward the exit.

"The person she was running from.""

Outside, a car disappeared into the night.

Inside the abandoned building, Daniel found the envelope Renata dropped.

He opened it.

Inside was Elena's final letter.

Not to him.

To Sofia.

And the first sentence made his hands shake.

"My sweet Sofia, if you are reading this, it means I was not able to come home.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because finally...

May you like

The truth was no longer hidden from him.

It was waiting for his daughter.
