Chapter 10: The File That Was Never Meant to Be Found

Daniel had spent the entire night staring at the same three things.

Elena’s letter.

The photograph of Lily Hart.

And the bracelet found inside Sofia’s room.

Three pieces of a puzzle that should never have existed together.

But they did.

And the more he tried to separate them, the more connected they became.

By sunrise, he understood one terrifying truth.

Renata was not running away because she was guilty.

She was running because something else was coming.

Something she feared more than being exposed.

Detective Hill sat across from him in the kitchen, several files spread across the table.

"We checked the bracelet," Hill said.

Daniel looked up.

"And?""

"It's old. The engraving matches records from the Hart case.""

Daniel glanced toward the staircase.

Sofia was upstairs with Dolores.

Safe.

At least for now.

"How did someone get into my house?""

Hill looked uncomfortable.

"Your security system was disabled.""

Daniel frowned.

"Impossible.""

"It happened from inside the house.""

That answer hit harder.

Inside.

Someone had access.

Someone who knew the property.

Someone who knew the routines.

Someone who belonged there.

Daniel thought about every person who had walked through those doors.

Employees.

Friends.

Family.

Renata.

Thomas.

His own mistakes.

"Who else knew about Elena's investigation?"" Hill asked.

Daniel looked down.

"Maybe Thomas.""

"Maybe?""

"He says he was helping her.""

"And do you believe him?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Because the truth was complicated.

Thomas had lied.

But so far, every person who knew anything had lied.

Some to protect themselves.

Some because they thought they were protecting him.

The difference was becoming harder to see.

A sound came from the hallway.

Daniel turned.

Sofia stood there holding a small notebook.

"Daddy?""

He immediately stood.

"What is it?""

She walked toward him.

"I found this.""

The notebook was tiny.

Pink.

Child-sized.

Daniel recognized it.

His heart stopped.

"Where did you get this?""

"Behind my bed.""

He opened it carefully.

The first pages contained drawings.

A house.

A family.

A woman with long hair.

Then the drawings changed.

The colors became darker.

The final pages were filled with words.

Written by a child's hand.

"I saw her arguing with Mommy.""

Daniel froze.

"Sofia...""

She looked scared.

"I forgot.""

"What do you mean?""

"I forgot because Renata told me not to think about it.""

Daniel's chest tightened.

"What did you see?""

Sofia hugged herself.

"I saw Mommy crying.""

The room became silent.

"When?""

Sofia looked at the notebook.

"Before she went away.""

Daniel sat down.

"Sweetheart, your mommy didn't go away.""

The words hurt him as he said them.

Because for years, he had avoided saying anything different.

He had accepted the accident.

The loss.

The explanation.

But now everything was changing.

"What happened that day?""

Sofia closed her eyes.

"I woke up because I heard voices.""

"Whose voices?""

"Mommy and Renata.""

Daniel and Detective Hill exchanged a look.

"What were they saying?""

Sofia whispered:

"Mommy said she knew.""

"Knew what?""

"She said she knew what Renata did.""

Daniel leaned closer.

"Then what happened?""

Sofia's hands shook.

"Renata saw me.""

A cold feeling moved through Daniel.

"What happened after that?""

"She told me to go back to bed.""

"Did you?""

Sofia nodded.

"But I didn't sleep.""

"Why?""

"Because I heard Mommy scream.""

Nobody moved.

Then Sofia said the sentence Daniel would never forget.

"And then I heard a man.""

Daniel felt his blood run cold.

"A man?""

Sofia nodded.

"Mommy said his name.""

"What name?""

The little girl looked at him.

"She said...""

She stopped.

Her face changed.

Like she was afraid of the memory.

"Sofia.""

Daniel softened his voice.

"It's okay.""

The child swallowed.

"She said, 'Thomas, don't do this.''"

The room went silent.

The name.

The same name Elena had written.

The same name connected to the accident records.

Daniel stood slowly.

"No.""

He wanted to reject it.

Needed to.

But the evidence was building.

Piece by piece.

Detective Hill closed the file.

"We need to speak with Thomas again.""

Daniel nodded.

But before anyone could move, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered.

A man's voice came through.

Not Renata.

Someone else.

"You finally asked your daughter the right questions.""

Daniel froze.

"Who is this?""

A pause.

Then:

"Someone who tried to save Elena.""

Daniel gripped the phone.

"Where are you?""

"I can't tell you.""

"Why?""

"Because if they find me, I'll disappear like Lily.""

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Who are they?""

The voice became quieter.

"The people who have been cleaning up Renata's mistakes for years.""

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Detective Hill looked at him.

"Who was that?""

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

At Sofia.

At the child who had carried the truth alone.

"I don't know.""

May you like

Then he looked back at the files.

"But I think they know exactly what happened to Elena.""
