Chapter 7: The Daughter Nobody Was Allowed to Mention

Jason read Laura's message three times.

*Daniel knows I have it, and he's on his way to your mother's house.*

He immediately called her.

She answered on the first ring.

“Laura, where are you?””

“I'm in my car. Two streets away from your mother's house.””

“Don't go there. Daniel might already be watching the property.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you going?””

“Because I have something your mother has been waiting twenty years to see.””

Jason looked at Evelyn.

His mother was sitting in the study, holding his father's letter with both hands.

“Laura,” he said carefully, “are you really my father's daughter?””

There was silence.

Then she answered.

“Yes.””

Jason closed his eyes.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't know you existed until three years ago.””

“What?””

“My mother died without telling me the whole story. I found a box of letters after her funeral. Your father's name was on every one.””

Jason looked at the photograph on the desk.

The young woman standing beside his father was beautiful, with dark hair and the same sharp eyes Laura had.

“Why are you involved in the property sale?””

“Because your father left something to my mother. Something Daniel has spent years trying to get.””

“What?””

“The original deed.””

Laura lowered her voice.

“And Jason, there's something else you need to understand. Your brother isn't just trying to steal the house. He's trying to erase my mother's ownership claim before I can prove it.””

Jason felt a chill.

“Where are you now?””

“Outside your mother's neighborhood.””

“Stay there. I'm coming.””

He ended the call and turned toward Evelyn.

“Mom, we need to leave.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I'm not running from Daniel.””

“I'm not asking you to run. I'm asking you to stay safe.””

She slowly stood.

“Your father would never have wanted this.””

Jason helped her put on her coat.

“He also wouldn't have wanted someone stealing from his granddaughter.””

That made Evelyn pause.

She looked toward the staircase.

“Sophie is at school.””

“I'll pick her up.””

“No,” Evelyn said firmly.

“Let her have one normal day.””

Jason nodded.

He drove his mother to Margaret's office, then called Laura and arranged to meet her at a nearby coffee shop.

Laura was already waiting when he arrived.

She stood beside a window, holding a thick brown envelope.

Jason approached cautiously.

For a moment, they simply stared at each other.

There was something familiar about her face.

The same straight nose.

The same deep-set eyes.

The same small crease between her eyebrows that Jason remembered from photographs of his father.

“Hello, Jason,” she said.

He pulled out a chair.

“Show me.””

Laura placed the envelope on the table.

Inside was an original property deed dated twenty-seven years earlier.

The property was the downtown commercial building.

But the owner listed on the document wasn't Daniel.

It wasn't Jason.

And it wasn't even Evelyn.

It was Katherine Moore.

Laura's mother.

Jason read the document again.

“Why did my father tell my mother this building belonged to the family?””

“He didn't,” Laura replied.

“He told her the building was being held for my mother and me.””

Jason looked up.

“Then why was it in the family trust?””

“Because my mother allowed your father to manage it. She trusted him.””

“Did she know he remarried?””

“Yes. She knew about Evelyn. She even knew about you.””

Laura opened another envelope.

“This is a letter my mother wrote to your father three months before she died.””

Jason began reading.

Katherine explained that she had never wanted to fight over money. She wanted her daughter to have a secure future, and she trusted Jason's father to protect the property until Laura was old enough to understand the arrangement.

But the final paragraph changed everything.

If Daniel continues threatening to claim the building, remind him that he has no legal interest in it. He knows why.

Jason looked up.

“What did Daniel do?””

Laura shook her head.

“I don't know. My mother never explained.””

“Then why did Daniel say he was entitled to inherit it?””

“Because he was involved in a business deal with your father. A deal that collapsed.””

Jason rubbed his forehead.

“This gets worse every minute.””

Laura nodded.

“There's one more thing.””

She removed a folded document from the bottom of the envelope.

It was a copy of a settlement agreement.

Jason read the first page.

Then his face tightened.

Daniel had borrowed $180,000 from Katherine's property management company when he was twenty-eight.

He had signed an agreement promising to repay the money or surrender any future claim to the property.

He had never repaid it.

Instead, he'd spent years telling people the building would eventually belong to him.

“Your brother owes my family money,” Laura said.

Jason looked at the amount.

“And he's trying to sell the building to pay off his debts.””

“Exactly.””

“Does Monica know?””

Laura didn't answer immediately.

Then she said, “I think she's been helping him for longer than you realize.””

Jason stared at her.

“What do you mean?””

Laura pulled out her phone and showed him a photograph.

It was taken outside a restaurant two years earlier.

Monica and Daniel were sitting together at a table.

They weren't arguing.

They were smiling.

Daniel was holding a folder.

Monica was signing something.

Jason recognized the date.

It was the week Monica had told him she was attending a business conference.

He slowly lowered the phone.

“They've been working together for two years?””

“Possibly longer.””

Jason's phone rang.

It was Margaret.

“Jason, where are you?””

“At a coffee shop with Laura.””

“Get back here immediately. Daniel just arrived at Evelyn's house.””

Jason stood so quickly that his chair scraped across the floor.

“What?””

“Your neighbor called. Daniel is inside the property.””

Jason looked at Laura.

She had already grabbed her envelope.

Margaret continued.

“And Jason, he isn't alone.””

“Who is with him?””

A pause.

May you like

Then Margaret answered.

“Your wife.””
