Chapter 17: The Family Tree of Lies

The hospital room smelled of antiseptic and stale coffee.

Robert Miller lay propped against two pillows, a bandage wrapped around his forehead.

Jason entered with Laura and Margaret.

“Where's Sophie?”” Robert asked.

“With a police officer and a social worker. She's safe.””

Robert nodded.

“Good.””

Jason pulled a chair beside the bed.

“Tell me what you meant.””

Robert looked at Margaret.

She nodded.

He took a breath.

“Daniel and Monica aren't siblings. Daniel was Katherine's son from her first marriage. Monica was Robert Carter's daughter.””

Laura stared.

“So Daniel is my half-brother.””

“Yes,” Robert said.

“And Monica is your half-sister.””

Jason rubbed his forehead.

“Then why did Daniel tell me he and Monica were brother and sister?””

“Because it made the inheritance easier to manipulate. He wanted you to believe the family had a simple structure. It didn't.””

Laura sat down.

“What about Katherine's first husband?””

Robert looked toward the window.

“His name was Thomas Moore. He died when Daniel was young. Katherine later married Robert Carter, but she never legally adopted Daniel.””

Jason frowned.

“Then why did Dad raise him?””

“Because Katherine asked him to.””

Robert shifted uncomfortably.

“Robert Carter loved Katherine. He also loved her children. He treated Daniel like his own son, even after he discovered Daniel had been stealing from her.””

Laura looked at the floor.

“And Monica?””

“She was born years later, after Robert and Katherine's relationship had ended. Robert Carter knew about her, but he didn't acknowledge her publicly.””

Jason looked at Margaret.

“Does that mean Monica has a claim to the estate?””

“Not automatically,” Margaret replied.

“That depends on the documents, the trust terms, and applicable inheritance law. But it explains why Daniel wanted control of the records.””

Robert nodded.

“Katherine had left instructions that her children should receive equal shares of her personal estate. Daniel wanted the commercial building because he believed it was worth millions. Monica wanted access to the Carter property and the education trust.””

Jason looked at him.

“Why would she help him?””

“Because Daniel promised her something.””

“What?””

Robert hesitated.

“Proof that Robert Carter had acknowledged her.””

Jason looked away.

“So she destroyed my mother's life for a piece of paper?””

“She believed she was owed something.””

“That doesn't excuse what she did.””

“No,” Robert said quietly.

“It doesn't.””

Laura opened her mother's diary.

“There are entries about a third person. Someone Katherine feared more than Daniel.””

Robert nodded.

“Harold Whitmore.””

“He was involved in the accident report,” Jason said.

“He was involved in more than that. He helped Katherine establish a new identity after she escaped the hospital.””

Laura looked up.

“Why would he help her?””

“Because Katherine had evidence that he was taking money from her property accounts. She threatened to expose him.””

Margaret leaned forward.

“Then why did he later work with Daniel?””

“Because Daniel found out where Katherine was hiding.””

Laura's face went pale.

“He found her?””

Robert nodded.

“Years later. He used the same security company to track her.””

Jason remembered the payments in the ledger.

“Hawthorne Security.””

“Yes.””

“Did Daniel hurt her?””

Robert looked at him.

“I don't know.””

The room fell silent.

Laura gripped the diary.

“My mother may still be alive.””

Robert nodded.

“I believe she is.””

Margaret opened her briefcase.

“There's another issue. Monica mentioned a sealed envelope in Robert Carter's estate file.””

Robert's expression changed.

“Then it's time.””

He reached beneath his pillow and removed a small brass key.

“Your father gave me this before he died.””

Jason took it.

“What does it open?””

“A safe deposit box at First National Bank. He told me to give it to you only if the ledger was found.””

Margaret looked at the key.

“Do you know what's inside?””

“Only that it contains the original estate instructions and a letter addressed to Jason.””

Jason stared at him.

“Why me?””

“Because your father knew Daniel would try to turn you against everyone.””

Laura looked at Jason.

“Then we need to get it.””

Margaret checked the time.

“The bank opens in an hour.””

They left the hospital after arranging for an officer to remain with Robert.

At the bank, Margaret presented the necessary estate documents.

The manager led them to a secure room and brought out a small metal box.

Jason inserted the key.

Inside were three items:

A sealed envelope.

A photograph.

And a thin folder labeled *KATHERINE MOORE — FINAL TRUST INSTRUCTIONS.*

Laura reached for the photograph.

It showed Katherine standing beside a little girl.

The girl was about five years old.

Laura studied her face.

“That's me.””

Jason looked closer.

But there was another person in the background.

A teenage boy.

Daniel.

On the back, Robert Carter had written:

All three of Katherine's children. Before the lies began.

Laura opened the folder.

The trust instructions named three beneficiaries.

Laura Bennett.

Daniel Carter.

And Monica Moore.

But the final clause stated that none of them could receive their full inheritance until the original property deed was returned and the truth about Katherine's disappearance was established.

Margaret looked at the document.

“This explains everything.””

Jason opened the envelope addressed to him.

His father's handwriting was unmistakable.

Jason, if you're reading this, then the truth has finally reached the people I failed to protect.

He continued reading.

I did not tell you everything about your family because I believed silence could keep you safe. I was wrong.

Jason swallowed.

There is one person you must find before Daniel does. Her name is Katherine. She knows who arranged the accident, who falsified the report, and who has been collecting money from our family for twenty years.

The letter ended with an address.

A small coastal town in Maine.

Laura looked at Margaret.

“That's where she is?””

“It's the only lead we have.””

Jason folded the letter.

“We're going.””

Margaret stopped him.

“Not without checking the address first.””

She called the number listed on the trust paperwork.

A woman answered.

Margaret identified herself and asked whether Katherine Moore still received mail at the address.

The woman went silent.

Then she said:

“Mrs. Moore died last winter.””

Laura's face crumpled.

Jason gripped the edge of the table.

But the woman continued.

“However, she left instructions that if anyone from the Carter family called, I was to give them a package.””

Margaret asked what package.

“A letter and a recording.””

“Where can we collect them?””

The woman hesitated.

“There's one condition.””

“What condition?””

“She said the package must be given to Laura Bennett alone.””

Laura looked at Jason.

“Why me?””

May you like

The woman answered through the phone.

“Because Mrs. Moore said her daughter was the only person who could be trusted with the truth.””
