Chapter 12: The Passenger Nobody Remembered

Evelyn gripped the edge of the workbench.

“Who was in the passenger seat?””

Robert lowered his eyes.

“I wish I could tell you it was a stranger.””

Laura stepped forward.

“Just say it.””

Robert looked at Jason.

“Your father.””

The workshop seemed to shrink around them.

Jason stared at the old man.

“My father was in the car?””

Robert nodded.

“He was driving behind Daniel and Katherine. They had argued at the building. Your father wanted them to stop fighting before somebody got hurt.””

Laura shook her head.

“But the accident report said Katherine was driving.””

“That report was false.””

“Who changed it?””

Robert swallowed.

“Your father.””

Jason stepped back.

“No. My father wouldn't do that.””

Robert's expression tightened.

“He was trying to protect Daniel.””

“By blaming Katherine?””

“No. By hiding what really happened.””

Robert sat on an old wooden stool.

“Daniel was driving. Katherine was in the passenger seat. Your father followed them because he knew Daniel was angry. He wanted to stop him before he did something stupid.””

Laura's hands trembled.

“What happened on the road?””

Robert looked at the floor.

“The car left the road after Daniel lost control during an argument. Katherine was badly injured. Your father arrived minutes later.””

Jason felt sick.

“Was she alive?””

Robert nodded.

“For a little while.””

Laura covered her mouth.

“My mother was alive?””

Robert's eyes filled.

“Your father held her hand. He told her help was coming.””

“Then what happened?””

Robert took a long breath.

“Daniel panicked. He was afraid the police would discover the missing money, the forged papers, and the argument. He wanted to leave.””

Laura stared at him.

“You let him?””

“I was young. I was frightened. Daniel threatened my family.””

Robert rubbed his face.

“Your father ordered me to call emergency services. Then he told Daniel to stay. But Daniel ran.””

Jason's voice was barely audible.

“And Dad?””

“He stayed with Katherine until the ambulance arrived.””

“Then why did he change the report?””

Robert looked at Evelyn.

“Because Daniel came to him two days later with a story. He claimed he'd been driving another vehicle and that Katherine had taken the wheel herself. He said if your father contradicted him, he'd tell the police about the stolen money and accuse him of helping Katherine manipulate the property records.””

Jason shook his head.

“That doesn't make sense. Dad could have told the truth.””

“He could have,” Robert said.

“But he was afraid Daniel would go to prison, and he believed he could still make him repay the money.””

Laura's voice cracked.

“So my mother was blamed for an accident she didn't cause?””

Robert nodded.

“And Daniel walked away.””

Evelyn slowly sat down.

“I never knew.””

Robert looked at her.

“Your husband regretted it every day.””

“Then why didn't he tell me?””

“Because he thought Daniel might come after you too.””

Jason looked toward the cassette recorder.

“What's on side B?””

Robert reached for the tape.

“Your father recorded my statement after the accident. He wanted a backup in case Daniel ever tried to claim the property again.””

Laura pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then Robert's younger voice emerged.

“My name is Robert Miller. I was present at the downtown property on the night of Katherine Moore's accident. I witnessed Daniel Carter arguing with Katherine.

I saw him leave the building with her in his vehicle. I later saw the accident scene and observed Robert Carter—”

The recording stopped.

Jason frowned.

“Robert Carter?””

Evelyn looked confused.

“Your father was named Robert?””

Jason nodded.

His father's full name had been Robert James Carter.

The recording continued.

“I observed Robert Carter arrive at the accident scene. He remained with Katherine until emergency services arrived. I did not see Katherine driving. Daniel Carter was the driver.””

Laura began crying silently.

For twenty years, she'd believed her mother had caused her own death.

Now she knew the truth.

But Robert wasn't finished.

He reached into his jacket again.

This time, he removed a small leather notebook.

“I kept this because I knew one day Daniel would come back.””

Jason took it.

“What is it?””

“The original account ledger. It shows every payment Daniel stole from Katherine's property.””

Laura opened the notebook.

The first pages contained dates and amounts.

The final pages contained something more disturbing.

A series of payments made to a medical consulting company.

Jason recognized the name from the assisted-living paperwork.

*Hale Medical Assessment Services.*

He looked up.

“Richard Hale?””

Robert nodded.

“Daniel paid him to arrange false medical evaluations.””

Laura's expression hardened.

“Was he involved in Katherine's case?””

“No. But he's been helping Daniel manipulate property records for years.””

Jason remembered the documents Monica had prepared.

The false medical forms.

The assisted-living application.

The attempt to declare Evelyn incapable.

It was all connected.

Daniel hadn't suddenly decided to steal the house.

He'd been building this plan for years.

Jason pulled out his phone.

“We're taking this to Margaret.””

Robert grabbed his arm.

“Not yet.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel knows I have the ledger. He knows I was going to give it to you.””

Jason stared at him.

“How?””

Robert glanced toward the garage.

“Because someone has been following me.””

Laura moved closer.

“Who?””

Robert didn't answer.

Instead, he opened the notebook to the final page.

There was a handwritten list of names.

Three names had been circled.

Daniel Carter.

Richard Hale.

Monica Carter.

Jason felt the blood drain from his face.

Monica.

His wife wasn't simply helping Daniel sell the property.

She had been involved in the cover-up surrounding Katherine's death.

Robert pointed to the final entry.

“There's one more thing you need to know about Monica.””

Jason looked down.

Beside her name was a date.

A payment of $75,000.

And a note written in Robert's handwriting:

*Payment for obtaining Evelyn's original signature and eliminating the last remaining copy of Katherine's deed.*

Jason's phone rang.

Monica.

He answered.

“Where are you?”” she demanded.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel is furious. He says you've found Robert.””

Jason said nothing.

Monica's voice became shaky.

“Listen to me. You need to leave that workshop immediately.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel is coming.””

“He already came.””

“No, Jason. You don't understand. He's not coming to argue.””

Jason looked at Robert.

The old man had gone completely pale.

Monica continued.

“He knows about the tape. He knows about the ledger. And he's bringing someone who can make sure neither of them ever reaches the police.””

“Who?””

A long silence followed.

Then Monica whispered:

“Your father never told you what happened to the original deed because he didn't hide it in the workshop.””

Jason's heart began pounding.

“Where is it?””

Monica started crying.

“It's in my possession.””

Jason went completely still.

“What?””

“I took it months ago.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel told me he would destroy us if I didn't cooperate.””

Jason gripped the phone.

“Monica, listen to me. You need to tell the truth.””

“I can't.””

“Why not?””

Her answer was almost inaudible.

“Because I didn't just help Daniel steal the house.””

Jason closed his eyes.

“What else did you do?””

Monica took a shaky breath.

Then she said the words that would destroy whatever remained of their marriage.

“I was the one who gave Daniel the information that helped him find Katherine's original hiding place twenty years ago.””

The call ended.

Jason stared at the phone.

Laura looked at him.

“What did she say?””

Before he could answer, headlights swept across the workshop windows.

A vehicle had stopped outside.

Then another.

Robert slowly stood.

His hands were shaking.

“That's him,” he whispered.

Jason moved toward the door.

“How many people?””

Robert looked through the window.

“Three.””

Then he turned toward Jason and delivered one final warning.

May you like

“Whatever you do, don't let Daniel get his hands on the ledger. Because the last page contains the name of the person who actually ordered Katherine's death.””

And that name wasn't Daniel's.
