Chapter 16: The Daughter Nobody Claimed

For several seconds, Jason couldn't hear anything except the pounding of his own heart.

Monica stood across from him, crying.

Daniel watched with an expression that was no longer amused.

Harold Whitmore quietly closed the briefcase.

Jason looked from the birth certificate to his wife.

“Say it again.””

Monica shook her head.

“Jason, please.””

“Say what you just told me.””

She swallowed.

“Robert Carter was my father.””

Jason stared at her.

“My father?””

“He wasn't your biological father.””

The words landed harder than any accusation could have.

Jason took a step backward.

“That's impossible.””

Daniel laughed once, without humor.

“Your father was a generous man. He raised you, gave you his name, and made sure nobody questioned the family history.””

“Shut up,” Jason said.

“Your mother knew.””

Jason turned toward Monica.

“Is that true?””

She couldn't look at him.

“Evelyn knew I was Katherine's daughter. She didn't know everything else.””

“Everything else?””

Monica wiped her cheeks.

“My mother had an affair with Robert before she married him. When she became pregnant, Robert promised to take responsibility. But Katherine was already married to someone else, and she refused to destroy her family.””

Laura stepped forward.

“Who was my father, then?””

Monica looked at her.

“I don't know.””

Laura's expression hardened.

“You expect me to believe you know all these secrets but don't know who fathered me?””

“Katherine never told me.””

Daniel interrupted.

“Enough. This isn't a family reunion.””

He pointed at the envelope on the floor.

“Where's the original ledger?””

Jason didn't answer.

Daniel looked at Monica.

“You said he would bring it.””

“He brought a copy.””

“You had one job.””

Monica flinched.

Jason moved closer to Sophie.

“I'm leaving with my daughter.””

Harold Whitmore stepped into his path.

“I'm afraid that's not possible yet.””

Jason looked at him.

“You're a retired judge. You have no authority here.””

Whitmore's face remained calm.

“I have something more useful than authority. I have information that could destroy your family.””

“Try me.””

Whitmore opened the briefcase again and removed a second document.

It was a notarized affidavit dated twenty years earlier.

Jason recognized his father's signature.

“What is that?””

“A declaration made by Robert Carter shortly before Katherine disappeared.””

Jason took it.

The affidavit stated that Robert had acknowledged a child born outside his marriage.

The child's name had been covered by a black strip.

But beneath it was a handwritten note:

I will provide for her, but she must never be told the truth about her father until the danger has passed.

Jason looked at Monica.

“Did you know?””

She nodded.

“I found out when I was twenty-three. Daniel told me.””

“Why didn't you tell me before we got married?””

“Because Daniel threatened to expose everything.””

Jason laughed bitterly.

“You married me knowing my father was your father?””

“I didn't know when we met. I found out later.””

“And you stayed?””

“I loved you.””

Jason looked away.

“You abused my mother. You stole from Sophie. You helped Daniel forge documents. Don't tell me you did all of that because you loved me.””

Monica lowered her head.

Daniel suddenly reached for the briefcase.

“That's enough. We're leaving.””

But before he could close it, Sophie spoke.

“Mommy?””

Monica turned.

Sophie was standing behind Jason, trembling.

“Why did you tell me Grandma was crazy?””

Monica's face crumpled.

“Sophie, sweetheart—”

“Why did you hide her medicine?””

“Please don't.””

“Why did you say she wanted to hurt you?””

Jason knelt beside his daughter.

“You don't have to listen to this.””

But Sophie kept looking at Monica.

“Grandma never hurt you.””

Monica began crying harder.

“I know.””

“Then why did you?””

No one answered.

A loud voice came from the entrance.

“Police! Nobody move!””

Officers rushed into the warehouse.

Daniel immediately raised his hands.

Harold Whitmore stepped away from the table.

Monica remained motionless.

Jason held Sophie close as two officers approached.

Officer Reynolds entered behind them.

“Jason, are you both all right?””

Jason nodded.

“Get my daughter somewhere safe.””

Reynolds directed an officer to escort Sophie outside.

As she passed Monica, Sophie stopped.

“I'm sorry, Mommy.””

Monica covered her mouth.

Sophie continued toward the exit.

Jason watched his daughter leave, then turned to Reynolds.

“Arrest them.””

Reynolds nodded.

Daniel protested as officers approached.

“This is a private family matter!””

“Not anymore,” Reynolds replied.

Whitmore attempted to identify himself as a former judge, but the officer took his identification and ordered him to turn around.

Monica did not resist.

As an officer placed handcuffs around her wrists, she looked at Jason.

“There's one more thing you need to know.””

Jason said nothing.

“Your father didn't die believing he had protected you.””

Jason frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Monica looked toward Daniel.

“He left instructions for someone to reveal the truth if the ledger ever surfaced.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“Don't.””

Monica continued.

“He knew someone would eventually find the records. He knew the family would turn against each other.””

Jason stepped closer.

“What instructions?””

Monica's voice dropped.

“Ask Margaret about the sealed envelope in your father's estate file.””

Then she was led away.

Outside, Laura stood beside a police vehicle, holding Sophie's hand.

Jason approached them.

“Is she okay?””

“She asked for you,” Laura said.

He crouched and hugged Sophie.

“I'm here.””

Sophie buried her face against his shoulder.

“Are we going home?””

Jason looked at Laura.

Then toward the warehouse.

“I don't know yet, sweetheart.””

Laura's phone rang.

It was Margaret.

She had just received a call from Robert Miller, who had been taken to the hospital after the warehouse confrontation.

Jason answered.

“What's happening?””

Margaret's voice was urgent.

“Robert is conscious. He wants to speak to you immediately.””

“About what?””

“He says the birth certificate is real, but Daniel has been lying about one important detail.””

Jason looked back at the warehouse.

“What detail?””

Margaret paused.

“Monica may be Robert Carter's daughter, but Daniel isn't her brother.””

Jason closed his eyes.

“Then who is Daniel?””

May you like

Margaret's answer came quietly.

“He's Katherine's son.””
