Chapter 20: The Last Page
Jason refused to release Sophie's hand.
“She lives with me,” he told the officers.
“Her mother was arrested after taking her from school and holding her at an abandoned warehouse.””
The officer examined the papers.
“We understand, sir. But the complaint alleges you have prevented contact with her mother.””
“Her mother is under investigation for fraud and kidnapping.””
“That's something the court will need to consider.””
Margaret stepped forward.
“I represent Mr. Carter. I need to see the full order.””
The officer handed her the document.
She read it quickly.
“This is not a custody transfer. It's a temporary order requiring a welfare assessment. Nobody is removing this child from her father tonight.””
Jason looked at her.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes. But we need to respond immediately.””
The officers left after confirming that Sophie would remain with Jason until the scheduled hearing.
Evelyn sat beside her granddaughter.
“I'm sorry, sweetheart.””
Sophie leaned against her.
“Grandma, did you hurt my mommy?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I made mistakes that hurt many people.””
Sophie considered that.
“Can people stop making mistakes?””
Evelyn kissed her forehead.
“They can try to make things right.””
Jason watched them.
For the first time in days, he understood that winning a legal battle would not automatically heal the damage inside his family.
Margaret gathered the recordings and documents.
“We have enough to challenge the forged deed and the false medical assessment. But Daniel still has the original commercial property documents.””
Laura looked at her.
“Not anymore.””
She opened her handbag and removed a sealed envelope.
“Katherine sent this to Patricia before she died. Patricia gave it to me with the recording.””
Inside was the original deed to the commercial building.
The document named Katherine Moore as sole owner.
Attached was a later transfer agreement establishing Laura as the rightful beneficiary.
Margaret examined it carefully.
“This is exactly what we need.””
Laura looked at Jason.
“My mother knew Daniel would try to sell the building.””
“She made sure he couldn't.””
Margaret nodded.
“And the ledger proves he diverted the rental income. We can freeze the remaining accounts.””
Jason looked toward the hallway.
“What about Whitmore?””
“His statement is now contradicted by two recordings, the original ledger, and the financial transfers. Reynolds can reopen the investigation.””
Margaret placed the deed in her briefcase.
“But we still need to find Daniel.””
As if summoned by the words, Jason's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Jason Carter?””
“Who is this?””
“Harold Whitmore.””
Jason stiffened.
“What do you want?””
“I want to correct a misunderstanding.””
“You should be talking to the police.””
“I've spent twenty years making the wrong decisions. I would prefer not to spend the rest of my life in prison.””
“Then tell them the truth.””
Whitmore paused.
“Daniel has the original payment records. He also has a document that could make your mother look like the person who arranged Katherine's accident.””
Jason glanced at Evelyn.
“What document?””
“A signed authorization.””
“My mother didn't authorize an accident.””
“I know. But the document exists.””
“Where is Daniel?””
Whitmore gave him an address.
An old office building downtown.
“Why are you telling me this?””
“Because Daniel intends to leave the country tonight.””
The call ended.
Margaret immediately contacted Reynolds.
Within minutes, police units were dispatched to the address.
Jason looked at Laura.
“Come with me.””
Margaret shook her head.
“No. You stay here with Sophie and Evelyn.””
“Daniel knows where we live.””
“And police are coming. Don't give him another opportunity to use your family against you.””
Jason reluctantly agreed.
Laura went with the officers.
At the downtown office building, Daniel was waiting in an empty conference room.
A suitcase stood beside his chair.
Harold Whitmore sat across from him.
Daniel looked up when Laura entered.
“Where's Jason?””
“He isn't coming.””
Daniel smiled.
“Of course he isn't. He's always been afraid of difficult conversations.””
Laura placed the original deed on the table.
“It's over.””
Daniel looked at the document.
His smile disappeared.
“You don't understand what you're holding.””
“My mother's property.””
“Your mother was a liar.””
Laura's expression hardened.
“She was more honest than you ever were.””
Daniel stood.
“You think that deed will make you rich? You think the courts will hand you everything?””
“I don't care about being rich.””
“Then why are you here?””
“Because you stole from her.””
Daniel laughed.
“She left that building to all of us.””
“No. She left it to me.””
“And Robert Carter promised me control of it.””
“Robert Carter promised a lot of things. Most of them were lies.””
Whitmore stood.
“Daniel, stop. The police are outside.””
Daniel turned on him.
“You're the reason this happened.””
Whitmore stepped backward.
“You paid me.””
“You told me nobody would get hurt.””
“You knew what was planned.””
Daniel lunged toward him.
Officers rushed into the room.
“Hands where we can see them!””
Daniel froze.
Whitmore raised his hands immediately.
Daniel looked toward the suitcase.
An officer moved between him and the door.
“You're under arrest.””
Daniel began shouting.
“You can't arrest me! Robert Carter arranged the entire thing!””
Laura watched as the officers handcuffed him.
“Then tell the truth,” she said.
Daniel looked at her.
For the first time, he seemed genuinely frightened.
“I was trying to protect the family.””
“No,” Laura replied.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
The following weeks brought a series of consequences.
The court froze the disputed property accounts. The commercial building was returned to Laura's control through the estate proceedings. The education trust was placed under independent supervision, and Margaret began the process of recovering the money stolen from Sophie's account.
Harold Whitmore agreed to cooperate with investigators.
His testimony, combined with the recordings and ledger, exposed the payments made to conceal Katherine's accident and falsify the original report.
Daniel faced charges related to fraud, forgery, financial theft, and his role in the conspiracy surrounding Katherine's death.
Monica's situation was more complicated.
She admitted to abusing Evelyn, hiding her medication, manipulating medical evaluations, and helping Daniel steal money. She also admitted that she had known Robert Carter was her biological father.
Her attorneys argued that Daniel had manipulated her for years.
But the recordings and financial records showed that she had made deliberate choices of her own.
Jason filed for divorce and requested sole custody of Sophie.
He did not tell his daughter that her mother was evil.
He told her the truth in words she could understand.
“Your mother did things that were wrong,” he said.
“And the grown-ups are going to make sure you're safe.””
Sophie asked whether she would see Monica again.
Jason told her they would work with counselors and the court to decide what was safest.
He refused to make promises he couldn't keep.
One afternoon, Evelyn sat on the porch while Sophie planted flowers beside her.
Laura arrived carrying a small wooden box.
“I found this among my mother's things,” she said.
Evelyn opened it.
Inside was a letter addressed to her.
She recognized Katherine's handwriting immediately.
Her hands trembled as she unfolded it.
Evelyn,
I know you believed you were protecting your family. I know you were frightened, and I know Robert asked you to keep quiet.
I cannot excuse what happened. But I don't want the rest of our lives to be defined by the worst thing we ever did.
You helped me leave that hospital. You gave me a chance to survive. I never forgot that.
Please tell Laura that I loved her. And tell Jason that he does not have to carry his father's guilt.
Let the children build something better than what we left them.
Evelyn began to cry.
Laura sat beside her.
“Do you think she forgave you?””
Evelyn looked at the letter.
“I don't know.””
Laura took her hand.
“Maybe she was giving you the chance to forgive yourself.””
Across the garden, Sophie called out.
“Grandma! Look!””
She held up a small flower, its yellow petals bright in the afternoon sun.
Evelyn smiled through her tears.
“That's beautiful, sweetheart.””
Jason stepped onto the porch.
He had spent months believing that protecting his family meant keeping everything together.
Now he understood that sometimes protection meant letting broken things end.
He looked at Laura.
“Have you decided what you'll do with the building?””
Laura smiled.
“I want to turn the upper floors into affordable apartments. My mother always wanted to help people who couldn't afford a safe place to live.””
Jason nodded.
“She'd have liked that.””
Laura looked toward Evelyn.
“And I'd like her name on it.””
Evelyn held the letter close.
For twenty years, Katherine's name had been buried beneath lies, forged documents, and a false accident report.
Now it would stand above a building that belonged to her.
Later that evening, Jason tucked Sophie into bed.
She held his hand.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Are we still a family?””
Jason sat beside her.
“Yes. But families don't have to pretend everything is perfect.””
“Can people be family even when they make bad choices?””
He thought about Monica.
About Daniel.
About his father.
About the secrets that had nearly destroyed them.
“Sometimes,” he said.
“But being family doesn't mean you have to let someone hurt you.””
Sophie nodded sleepily.
“Okay.””
Jason kissed her forehead and turned off the light.
Downstairs, Evelyn placed Katherine's letter beside the old photograph.
Three children stood in that picture.
Three lives shaped by secrets they hadn't chosen.
But the truth had finally given them something the lies never could.
May you like
A chance to choose what came next.
And for the first time in twenty years, nobody in the Carter family needed to hide the last page.
