Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Betrayal

Aaliyah barely slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, another question appeared.

Who had access to her laptop?

Who copied her work?

Who wanted her future destroyed?

The easiest answer was Mia.

But the more Aaliyah thought about it, the less certain she became.

Mia was jealous.

Mia was reckless.

But this?

This required planning.

This required patience.

This required someone who understood exactly what they were doing.

The next morning, Aaliyah showed David the file.

His face became serious.

“This was accessed from inside the house.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“Who knew your password?””

Aaliyah thought.

“My old password was based on my birthday.””

David frowned.

“Who knew that?””

Aaliyah didn’t answer.

Because suddenly, she remembered.

Mia.

Months ago, when they were still trying to have a relationship, Mia had borrowed her laptop.

“I just need to print something,” Mia had said.

Aaliyah had trusted her.

She had handed it over.

David saw the realization on her face.

“You remembered something.””

Aaliyah nodded slowly.

“Mia used my laptop once.””

David didn’t immediately react.

Instead, he asked:

“When?””

“Months ago.””

“Before the dress?””

“Yes.””

That changed things.

Because if Mia had copied the files months ago, then the dress incident might have been part of something bigger.

David wanted to confront her immediately.

But Aaliyah stopped him.

“I need to know the truth.””

So they searched.

Not through Mia’s private things.

Not through her belongings.

Only through information they already had access to.

The university had sent another email.

The evidence attached included screenshots.

Aaliyah looked closely.

Then she noticed something.

The formatting.

The document style.

The file names.

Something felt familiar.

“This isn’t from my final version.””

David looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

“My final project had a different structure.””

She pointed at the screen.

“This is an older draft.””

The accusation was built from something incomplete.

Someone hadn’t stolen her final work.

They had taken an unfinished version and tried to make it look like she cheated.

Someone wanted people to believe she was careless.

But why?

That afternoon, Aaliyah met with her professor.

She explained everything.

The professor listened carefully.

Then he said something unexpected.

“Aaliyah, I believe you.””

She looked surprised.

“You do?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He smiled slightly.

“Because I watched you create this project.””

He opened his laptop.

“I have your submission history.””

Aaliyah leaned closer.

The professor showed her a timeline.

Every update.

Every revision.

Every change.

All recorded.

“You didn’t suddenly create this overnight.””

He looked at her.

“You built it over months.””

Relief hit her so hard she almost cried.

But there was still one problem.

The person who did this had to be exposed.

When she returned home, Mia was sitting outside.

Waiting.

Aaliyah stopped.

“What are you doing?””

Mia stood.

“I found something.””

Aaliyah became cautious.

“What?””

Mia handed her a phone.

“My old messages.””

Aaliyah looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because I think they prove I didn’t do this.””

Aaliyah looked at the screen.

The messages were between Mia and someone else.

A person named Brandon.

Aaliyah recognized the name.

Brandon had been one of Mia’s friends.

The messages were from weeks earlier.

And one sentence immediately caught her attention.

*“She thinks she’s better than everyone. Someone needs to humble her.””*

Aaliyah’s stomach dropped.

She kept reading.

Mia responded:

*“Leave her alone.””*

Then another message appeared.

*“You don’t mean that.””*

Then:

*“I said leave her alone.””*

Aaliyah looked up.

“You knew?””

Mia looked ashamed.

“He talked about messing with you.””

“When?””

“Before graduation.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Mia looked away.

“Because I was angry at you.””

The honesty hurt.

“But I never wanted this.””

Aaliyah studied her.

For the first time, she believed her.

Mia had been cruel.

But maybe she wasn’t the monster everyone thought she was.

“Where is Brandon now?””

Mia hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

David walked outside.

“What’s going on?””

Aaliyah handed him the phone.

His expression darkened.

Because now they knew.

The person who had tried to destroy Aaliyah’s future wasn’t inside the house.

It was someone outside.

Someone who had been watching.

Someone who knew exactly where to hurt her.

And the next message on Mia’s phone revealed something even worse.

Brandon wasn’t acting alone.
