Chapter 7: The Accusation That Threatened Her Future
Aaliyah read the email three times.
Then four.
But the words refused to change.
*Academic misconduct.*
*Investigation required.*
*Evidence submitted.*
Each phrase felt heavier than the last.
She sat frozen on the couch, staring at the screen while the room around her became distant.
Graduation had been supposed to be the beginning.
A celebration.
A fresh start.
But somehow, every time she reached a moment of happiness, something appeared to take it away.
“What happened?””
David’s voice pulled her back.
Aaliyah looked up slowly.
Her face was pale.
“The university.””
His expression immediately changed.
“What about the university?””
She handed him the phone.
David read the email silently.
The longer he stared, the more serious his face became.
“They’re accusing you of cheating?””
Aaliyah shook her head quickly.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I didn’t do anything.””
“I know.””
The answer came instantly.
No hesitation.
No doubt.
And somehow, that meant more than anything.
Because for years, Aaliyah had worried people would question her.
She worried people would believe the worst.
But her father didn’t.
Not for one second.
Mia, standing nearby, looked shocked.
“What evidence?””
Aaliyah swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
David kept reading.
The university had received an anonymous report claiming Aaliyah had copied parts of a major final project.
The project had been one of the reasons she received her scholarship.
It was the project she had spent months completing.
The project she had worked on after closing shifts at the coffee shop.
The project she had stayed awake until three in the morning finishing.
Someone was now saying she stole it.
“I need to call them,” David said.
Aaliyah grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
He looked at her.
“I’m scared.””
Those three words broke something inside him.
Because Aaliyah was always the strong one.
She was always the person who handled everything.
Seeing fear on her face reminded him how much she had carried alone.
“You don’t have to be scared by yourself anymore.””
She looked at him.
“I don’t understand.””
“What?””
“Why does this keep happening?””
David didn’t have an answer.
And that was the hardest part.
Sometimes parents could fix broken things.
Sometimes they could protect their children.
But they couldn’t stop every person who wanted to hurt them.
The next morning, David and Aaliyah met with the university advisor.
Aaliyah sat in the office with her hands folded tightly.
Across from her, the advisor reviewed documents.
“I want you to understand something,” the woman said gently.
“An accusation does not mean you are guilty.””
Aaliyah nodded.
“But someone submitted evidence.””
“What evidence?””
The advisor hesitated.
“A copy of your project drafts.””
Aaliyah frowned.
“My drafts?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
The advisor looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because my drafts were only saved on my laptop.””
A cold feeling moved through her.
Only a few people had ever touched her laptop.
Only a few people knew where she kept her files.
Her mind immediately went somewhere she didn’t want it to go.
Mia.
No.
She stopped herself.
Mia had hurt her.
But Mia had also apologized.
Mia had admitted what she did.
Could she really have done something worse?
When they left the office, David noticed the expression on her face.
“What are you thinking?””
Aaliyah hesitated.
“I don’t know.””
But he knew.
Parents always knew when their children were trying to protect someone.
“Aaliyah.””
She looked at him.
“If you know something, tell me.””
She looked away.
“It might not be Mia.””
David stayed quiet.
That silence said everything.
Because he didn’t want to accuse anyone either.
But he also knew something had to be faced.
When they arrived home, Mia was waiting.
The moment she saw their faces, she knew something was wrong.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Then David spoke.
“The university received a report against Aaliyah.””
Mia froze.
“What kind of report?””
“They’re accusing her of cheating.””
Mia’s expression changed instantly.
“What?””
Aaliyah watched her carefully.
For the first time, Mia looked genuinely horrified.
“Who would do that?””
David studied her reaction.
“Mia.””
She looked at him.
“Did you have anything to do with this?””
The question hit harder than a slap.
Mia stepped back.
“You think I did that?””
“I’m asking.””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“After everything?””
Aaliyah looked between them.
“Mia…”
“No.””
Mia shook her head.
“No, I get it.””
She laughed bitterly.
“You think because I burned a dress, I’m capable of anything.””
Nobody spoke.
Because the painful truth was…
They didn’t know.
And Mia noticed.
That hurt more than the accusation.
“I know I messed up,” she said quietly.
“But I didn’t do this.””
Then she walked away.
Later that night, Aaliyah sat alone in her room.
She opened her laptop.
She searched through her files.
Everything looked normal.
Until she noticed something.
A folder had been accessed recently.
A folder she didn’t remember opening.
Her heart started beating faster.
She clicked.
Inside were old versions of her project.
But something was different.
One file had been copied.
And the last access date was the night before graduation.
The same night her dress was burned.
Aaliyah stared at the screen.
Because suddenly, the burned dress wasn’t the only thing someone had tried to destroy.
May you like
Someone had been planning this.
And they had been much closer than she realized.
