Chapter 5: The Evidence That Changed Everything
Three days after graduation, David received a phone call that changed the entire situation.
He was sitting in his office when his phone rang.
At first, he ignored it.
Unknown number.
But something made him answer.
“Hello?””
There was silence.
Then a voice.
“Is this David Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Rachel. I work at the store where your daughter bought her graduation dress.””
David sat up.
“What about it?””
The woman hesitated.
“I’m calling because I think you should know something.””
David immediately became alert.
“What?””
“The damage to the dress wasn’t random.””
His grip tightened around the phone.
“What do you mean?””
“We checked our security footage.””
David stopped breathing.
Security footage.
“Why would you check that?””
“Because Aaliyah came back to ask if there was anything we could do. She was upset because she thought maybe the dress had been defective.””
David closed his eyes.
Even after everything, Aaliyah was still looking for ways to avoid blaming people.
She had probably hoped it was an accident.
Rachel continued.
“We reviewed the footage from when she purchased it.””
“And?””
“There was someone else with her.””
David’s voice became quiet.
“Who?””
Another pause.
“Mia.””
The name alone made his stomach drop.
“What did you see?””
Rachel explained carefully.
“Mia asked questions about the dress. She knew how much Aaliyah paid. She knew when the graduation ceremony was.””
David leaned back.
“But that doesn’t prove anything.””
“No.””
Rachel agreed.
“But then we saw something else.””
“What?””
“She came back the next day.””
David frowned.
“Alone?””
“Yes.””
The room felt colder.
Rachel continued.
“She was looking at another dress. A much more expensive one.””
David’s jaw tightened.
“Did she buy it?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because her card was declined.””
Suddenly, pieces started connecting.
Mia’s designer bag.
Her expensive clothes.
Her need to appear better.
Her jealousy.
Rachel wasn’t finished.
“There’s more.””
David waited.
“We found another video.””
His heart sank.
“Of what?””
“Mia taking a picture of the receipt.””
David closed his eyes.
The receipt.
The proof of how much Aaliyah spent.
The proof that the dress mattered.
“How long have you known this?””
“We discovered it after Aaliyah left. She didn’t want to cause trouble, so we weren’t sure if we should contact you.””
David looked down.
His daughter had been protecting someone who hurt her.
Again.
“Thank you for telling me.””
After the call ended, David sat there for several minutes.
He wasn’t angry.
Not anymore.
Something deeper had replaced the anger.
Disappointment.
Because Mia wasn’t just jealous.
She had planned it.
That evening, David drove to Vanessa’s sister’s house.
Mia opened the door.
When she saw him, her expression changed.
“You’re here.””
David nodded.
“We need to talk.””
Mia stepped back.
“About what?””
David held up his phone.
“The dress.””
Her face immediately changed.
“What about it?””
“I know.””
Two words.
But they were enough.
Mia went silent.
David watched her.
“No excuses.””
She looked away.
“I didn’t mean for it to become this big.””
“That’s your defense?””
Mia’s eyes filled with frustration.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She swallowed.
For the first time, she looked less like the confident girl everyone knew.
And more like someone who was exhausted from pretending.
“I was tired.””
David frowned.
“Tired of what?””
“Being compared.””
“To who?””
Mia laughed sadly.
“You know.””
David shook his head.
“No. I don’t.””
“To Aaliyah.””
The answer surprised him.
“You think I compare you to her?””
Mia looked at him.
“Everyone does.””
David stared.
“No one asked you to compete with her.””
“But everyone noticed her.””
The words came out faster now.
“She gets praised for working hard. She gets called responsible. She gets scholarships. She gets everything.””
David shook his head.
“Mia, she worked for those things.””
“I know.””
The confession was quiet.
“I know she did.””
That was the first honest thing she had said.
David softened slightly.
“But you hurt her because you were jealous.””
Mia looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised both of them.
“I hated that she could be happy with something small.””
David didn’t speak.
Mia wiped her eyes.
“She bought that dress herself. She was so proud.””
Her voice cracked.
“And I hated that.””
Why?
Because somewhere deep inside, Mia wasn’t angry at Aaliyah.
She was angry at herself.
Because she had spent years chasing approval.
And Aaliyah had found confidence without needing anyone’s permission.
David took a breath.
“Regret doesn’t erase what happened.””
“I know.””
“You need to apologize.””
Mia nodded slowly.
“I will.””
But then David’s phone buzzed.
He looked down.
A message appeared.
From Vanessa.
The words made his face change.
“What happened?”” Mia asked.
David looked at her.
“Your mother found something.””
Mia’s stomach dropped.
“What?””
David turned the phone around.
It was a picture.
A document.
May you like
A bank statement.
And at the top was Mia’s name.
