Chapter 4: The Secret Mia Could No Longer Hide

For the first time in months, Aaliyah woke up without feeling like she had to defend herself.

The house was different.

Not because the furniture had changed.

Not because the walls looked any different.

But because the tension that had lived there for so long was finally gone.

For years, Aaliyah had learned how to walk quietly.

She learned how to close doors softly.

How to avoid arguments.

How to measure every word before speaking.

Because in a house full of complicated emotions, she had always felt like one wrong sentence could start a war.

But that morning, the silence felt peaceful.

Not empty.

Peaceful.

She sat at the kitchen table holding a cup of coffee while David cooked breakfast.

It was something he rarely did.

Usually, he was rushing out the door before sunrise.

But today, he stood there making pancakes like he had nowhere else to be.

“You know,” Aaliyah said softly, “I don’t remember the last time you cooked.””

David smiled slightly.

“That’s because I’m usually terrible at it.””

She laughed.

A real laugh.

The kind she hadn’t made in a long time.

“I’m surprised you haven’t burned the kitchen down.””

He looked offended.

“I’ll have you know I’ve improved.””

Aaliyah looked at the pancakes.

One was perfectly round.

The others looked like they had survived a storm.

She raised an eyebrow.

“Improved?””

“Okay,” he admitted.

“Maybe not that much.””

For a moment, they were just father and daughter.

No drama.

No jealousy.

No pretending.

But underneath the happiness was a question Aaliyah couldn’t ignore.

“What happened to Mia and Vanessa?””

David’s expression changed.

He placed the spatula down.

“They’re staying at Vanessa’s sister’s house for now.””

Aaliyah looked down.

“Did you really mean it?””

David knew what she was asking.

“About making them leave?””

She nodded.

He took a deep breath.

“I meant what I said yesterday.””

Aaliyah was quiet.

Part of her felt relieved.

Another part felt guilty.

Because no matter how badly Mia had hurt her, she never wanted anyone to lose their home.

“I don’t want her to suffer,” Aaliyah said.

David looked surprised.

“After everything she did?””

“She was wrong.””

Aaliyah looked at the table.

“But I know what it feels like to feel unwanted.””

David’s face softened.

That was the thing about Aaliyah.

Even after being hurt, she still cared.

“You’re different from her,” he said.

Aaliyah shook her head.

“No. I just made different choices.””

David smiled.

“That’s exactly why I’m proud of you.””

But neither of them knew that across town, Mia was sitting in a bedroom filled with anger.

And regret.

She stared at her phone.

Hundreds of thoughts ran through her mind.

She wanted to blame Aaliyah.

She wanted to blame David.

She wanted to convince herself she was the victim.

But every time she closed her eyes, she saw Aaliyah standing there beside the burned dress.

She saw the hurt.

The disappointment.

The moment when someone who had never hated her finally looked at her like a stranger.

Mia threw her phone onto the bed.

“Why do I feel guilty?”” she whispered.

Vanessa, sitting nearby, looked at her daughter.

“Because maybe you went too far.””

Mia immediately became defensive.

“So now you’re blaming me too?””

Vanessa sighed.

“I’m saying what happened was wrong.””

Mia laughed bitterly.

“You defended me yesterday.””

“I was wrong.””

Those words surprised Mia.

Because Vanessa rarely admitted mistakes.

Mia looked at her mother.

“What changed?””

Vanessa looked away.

“The way David looked at Aaliyah.””

Mia frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means he finally saw what we were doing.””

Mia didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

They both knew.

For years, they had convinced themselves Aaliyah was too sensitive.

Too emotional.

Too dramatic.

But maybe the truth was different.

Maybe Aaliyah had simply been hurt too many times.

Then Mia’s phone buzzed.

She looked down.

A notification appeared.

Aaliyah had posted graduation photos.

Mia hesitated.

Then she opened it.

There was Aaliyah.

Standing in her graduation gown.

Smiling.

Surrounded by friends.

The caption was simple.

“Made it. ❤️”

Mia stared at the picture.

She expected to feel anger.

Instead, she felt something worse.

Shame.

Because Aaliyah looked happy.

Not because she had the perfect dress.

Not because everything went according to plan.

She looked happy because she had survived.

Mia locked the phone.

Then another notification appeared.

This one was from an unknown number.

Her face changed.

The message contained a single sentence.

“We need to talk about what you did.””

Mia froze.

May you like

Because she knew exactly who it was.

And she knew the secret she had been hiding was finally catching up with her.
