Chapter 11: The Revenge Plan Hidden in the Shadows
Vanessa had disappeared after the confrontation.
At least, that was what everyone thought.
She moved away.
Changed her number.
Stopped answering calls.
For weeks, David believed she had finally accepted responsibility.
He was wrong.
Because Vanessa wasn’t healing.
She was angry.
She sat alone in a small apartment, scrolling through old pictures.
Pictures of when everything looked perfect.
Family dinners.
Celebrations.
Mia smiling.
Aaliyah smiling.
A life that looked better than it really was.
In Vanessa’s mind, she wasn’t the person who caused damage.
She was the person who had been betrayed.
She convinced herself that David had chosen Aaliyah over her.
That Mia had abandoned her.
That everyone had judged her without understanding her.
And anger had a dangerous way of making people rewrite their own memories.
One evening, Vanessa received a message.
From Brandon.
She stared at the name.
She hadn’t spoken to him since everything collapsed.
But the message was simple.
*We need to talk.*
She almost ignored it.
Almost.
But curiosity won.
They met at a small café.
Brandon looked nervous.
“You shouldn’t be here,” Vanessa said.
He laughed.
“Funny. You’re the one who wanted to teach Aaliyah a lesson.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“I never told you to ruin her life.””
“No.””
Brandon leaned forward.
“But you made it clear you wanted her brought down.””
Vanessa looked away.
The words hurt because they were true.
“I made mistakes.””
Brandon smiled.
“So did I.””
“What do you want?””
He slid a folder across the table.
Vanessa looked at it.
“What is this?””
“Insurance.””
She opened it.
Inside were screenshots.
Messages.
Evidence.
Things that could destroy people.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“You kept all this?””
“I’m not stupid.””
For the first time, Vanessa realized something.
Brandon wasn’t helping her.
He was using her.
“You’re threatening me.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“I’m reminding you that we both have secrets.””
Vanessa stood.
“I’m done.””
But Brandon’s final words stopped her.
“You think Aaliyah won because everyone believes she’s innocent?””
Vanessa turned.
“She isn’t.””
The sentence caught her attention.
“What are you talking about?””
Brandon leaned back.
“I found something.””
“What?””
“Aaliyah’s old project.””
Vanessa frowned.
“The one she was accused of?””
“Yes.””
“That was fake.””
Brandon shook his head.
“No.””
He lowered his voice.
“Someone else changed the files before I used them.””
Vanessa froze.
“What?””
“I thought I was helping you.””
The café suddenly felt colder.
“But someone else was already trying to destroy her.””
Vanessa stared.
“Who?””
Brandon smiled.
“That’s what I’m trying to find out.””
Meanwhile, Aaliyah was unaware of any of this.
She was preparing for one of the biggest opportunities of her life.
Her university had selected her for a national student leadership conference.
It was everything she had worked toward.
A chance to share her story.
A chance to build her future.
When David heard the news, he was thrilled.
“That’s amazing.””
Aaliyah smiled.
“I’m nervous.””
“You should be.””
She laughed.
“Why would you say that?””
“Because being nervous means it matters.””
She smiled.
That was something her father always did.
Turn fear into motivation.
But the night before the conference, Aaliyah received an email.
Another one.
Another accusation.
Her heart sank.
The subject line read:
*Important Notice Regarding Your Scholarship Status*
She opened it.
Her hands started shaking.
Someone had submitted new evidence.
Evidence claiming her scholarship application contained false information.
Aaliyah stared at the screen.
“No…”
Not again.
She immediately called David.
He answered quickly.
“What happened?””
Her voice trembled.
“Dad…”
He heard the fear.
And this time, he knew exactly what it meant.
“What did they do?””
Aaliyah looked at the email.
“I don’t know.””
Then another message appeared.
A photo attachment.
A screenshot.
And one name appeared at the bottom.
The person who submitted it.
May you like
Aaliyah stopped breathing.
Because the name belonged to someone she never expected.
