Chapter 7: The Night Everything Was Buried
Emily could barely recognize the woman standing in front of her.
Diane had always been loud.
Demanding.
Certain.
She had opinions about everything, from the curtains in Emily’s house to how Lily wore her hair.
But now she looked small.
Old.
Afraid.
Emily held the photograph in both hands.
“You were there.””
Diane closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
“You watched my father die.””
“I watched your father make a choice.””
“What choice?””
Diane opened her eyes.
“To keep you alive.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Don't twist this.””
“I’m not.””
“You knew Jonathan was there.””
Diane's mouth tightened.
“I knew he was coming.””
“And you didn't stop him.””
“I couldn't.””
“You could have called the police.””
“They would have been too late.””
Emily shook her head.
“Stop talking around it.””
Diane looked at her.
“I was supposed to take the documents.””
“What documents?””
“The originals.””
“The trust.””
“Yes.””
Emily's stomach turned.
“Why?””
“Because Jonathan believed the trust gave your father too much power.””
Robert said coldly, “It gave him the power to expose your entire network.””
Diane looked at him.
“You don't understand what your friend had discovered.””
“He discovered fraud.””
“He discovered something much worse.””
Emily stepped closer.
“What could be worse than stealing money?””
Diane hesitated.
“The money wasn't the real secret.””
Ryan suddenly whispered,
“Mom.””
Diane turned toward him.
“Don't.””
“You owe her the truth.””
“I've protected you for years.””
“You've destroyed everything.””
Diane's face hardened.
“I kept you out of prison.””
Emily turned sharply toward Ryan.
“Prison?””
Ryan looked away.
“What did you do?””
“I wasn't the one who started it.””
“That isn't an answer.””
Ryan rubbed both hands over his face.
“Your father found evidence that Jonathan had been moving money through shell companies.””
Emily frowned.
“How does that involve you?””
“Jonathan needed someone inside the family.””
“And you volunteered?””
“No.””
Ryan's voice cracked.
“He approached me.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew my business was failing.””
Emily stared at him.
“And he offered you money.””
“Yes.””
“In exchange for access.””
Ryan nodded.
“And you gave him access.””
“At first I only provided information.””
“What information?””
“Your family's finances.””
Emily looked disgusted.
“You handed him our private records.””
“I thought I'd pay him back.””
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It wasn't supposed to.””
Robert crossed his arms.
“Explain.””
Ryan swallowed.
“Jonathan promised to erase my debts.””
“And?””
“He didn't.””
Emily understood.
“You became trapped.””
Ryan nodded.
“Every time I tried to stop, he threatened me.””
“With the recording.””
“Yes.””
“What was on it?””
Ryan looked at the photograph in Emily's hands.
“That night.””
Robert's eyes narrowed.
“The hospital.””
Ryan nodded.
“Jonathan had people watching your father.””
Emily's voice dropped.
“Why?””
“Because he believed your father had moved the original trust documents before he could be stopped.””
“And you?””
“I was sent to find them.””
Emily looked at the photograph again.
“That's why you were at the hospital.””
“Yes.””
“You told me you were home that night.””
“I lied.””
“Why?””
“Because I was scared.””
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“My father was dying.””
“I know.””
“And you were searching his room.””
Ryan lowered his head.
“Yes.””
Robert stepped forward.
“What happened?””
Ryan looked at him.
“Your father caught me.””
Emily's breath caught.
“What did he say?””
“He asked me if I was working for Jonathan.””
“Were you?””
“Yes.””
“What did he do?””
“He didn't call the police.””
“Why?””
“He knew I was being threatened.””
Robert looked stunned.
“What else?””
Ryan's voice became quieter.
“He gave me an envelope.””
Emily looked at him.
“What envelope?””
“The one that contained the instructions.””
Emily looked down at the letter she had been holding.
“That envelope?””
“No.””
Ryan shook his head.
“Another one.””
“Where is it?””
“I don't know.””
Emily stared.
“It's gone.””
“Who took it?””
Ryan looked toward Diane.
“She did.””
Emily turned.
Diane's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Jonathan demanded it.””
“You gave him my father's last message.””
“No.””
Diane shook her head.
“I hid it.””
“Where?””
“I told you. I destroyed the key.””
Robert's expression hardened.
“Not the message.””
“No.””
Diane looked at Emily.
“I kept the message.””
“Where?””
Diane glanced toward Lily's bedroom.
“I gave it to Lily.””
Emily froze.
“Why?””
“Because your father told me that if anything happened to him, Lily was the only person nobody would suspect.””
Emily's heart pounded.
“You gave a four-year-old girl an envelope?””
Diane nodded.
“She was eight.””
“And you waited four years to tell me?””
“I waited because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of Jonathan?””
“Yes.””
Emily shook her head.
“You should have been afraid of me.””
Diane looked down.
“You have every right to hate me.””
“I don't hate you.””
Diane looked up.
“I don't have time.””
Emily turned toward the stairs.
“Lily may still have it.””
Robert said, “We need to get to Briarwood.””
Emily nodded.
“Now.””
Ryan grabbed his keys.
“I'll drive.””
Robert stopped him.
“No.””
“They know me.””
“Exactly.””
Ryan stared at him.
“Then who drives?””
Emily answered.
“Me.””
The drive to Briarwood was almost silent.
Emily kept the photograph on the passenger seat.
Robert sat beside her.
Ryan and Diane sat in the back.
Every few minutes, Emily checked the clock.
Seventeen minutes.
Then sixteen.
The city lights blurred against the windshield.
Robert finally spoke.
“Emily.””
“Yes?””
“When we get there, you don't go inside alone.””
“They said I have to.””
“They don't control us.””
“They control Lily.””
Robert had no answer.
At the storage facility, the gate stood open.
There were no guards visible.
No cars moving.
Just rows of beige buildings under harsh security lights.
Emily pulled into the lot.
Locker 318 was near the end.
She got out.
Ryan followed.
Robert stepped out too.
Emily looked at him.
“They said—”
“I don't care.””
He kept walking.
Diane remained in the car.
Emily opened the locker.
Nothing.
Empty shelves.
Dust.
One broken cardboard box.
Ryan stared.
“I told you.””
Emily searched the walls.
Robert crouched near the floor.
“Here.””
He pointed beneath the bottom shelf.
A thin metal plate was screwed into the concrete.
Emily knelt.
There was a keyhole.
She looked at the brass key.
The engraving read 318.
She inserted it.
Click.
The metal plate popped open.
Inside was a narrow compartment.
There was a flash drive.
Three photographs.
And a small cassette recorder.
Emily picked up the recorder.
The batteries were already inside.
She pressed PLAY.
Static.
Then her father's voice.
“Emily.””
She stopped breathing.
Robert closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
“If you're hearing this, I've failed to keep the danger away from you.””
Emily covered her mouth.
“I need you to know that Ryan was not the person I feared most.””
Ryan looked up sharply.
“What?””
The tape continued.
“He is compromised, but he is not the architect.””
Emily stared at Ryan.
Her father continued.
“The person controlling this operation has someone inside my own family.””
Robert's expression changed.
Diane began to cry in the car.
Emily slowly turned toward her.
The recording continued.
“Do not trust the person who tells you the trust is about money.””
A pause.
“It isn't.””
Static crackled.
Then her father's voice became urgent.
“It is about ownership.””
Emily frowned.
“Ownership of what?””
The tape continued.
“Not the family business. Not the accounts. Something more valuable.””
Robert leaned closer.
Emily pressed the speaker toward him.
Her father's voice lowered.
“Someone has been trying to claim legal ownership of a person.””
Emily's blood turned cold.
Ryan whispered,
“No.””
The recording continued.
“And that person is Lily.””
Emily looked at her daughter’s name written on one of the files.
“What does that mean?””
The cassette clicked.
Her father's voice returned.
“If they succeed in establishing a false guardianship, they don't simply control Lily's finances.””
A pause.
“They gain access to her legal identity.””
Emily's face went blank.
Ryan shook his head.
“That isn't possible.””
Robert turned toward him.
“Then why were they building the petition?””
Ryan had no answer.
The tape continued.
“They intend to alter the ownership structure created at Lily's birth.””
Emily stared.
Her father said one final sentence.
“Lily is not merely the beneficiary. She is the key.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
Then Diane screamed.
“GET DOWN!””
A gunshot cracked through the storage facility.
The windshield of the car exploded into glittering fragments.
Robert tackled Emily to the ground.
Ryan pulled Diane out of the vehicle.
Another shot struck the metal door beside them.
Emily crawled behind the concrete divider.
Her heart hammered.
“Where is Lily?””
A voice echoed through the rows.
“You brought the key.””
Emily recognized it.
Jonathan Mercer.
Robert looked toward the shadows.
“Where is my granddaughter?””
Jonathan laughed.
“She is exactly where she needs to be.””
Emily gripped the brass key.
“What do you want?””
A figure stepped into the fluorescent light at the end of the corridor.
Jonathan Mercer was older than Emily expected.
Silver at the temples.
Expensive coat.
Calm eyes.
Almost no expression.
He looked directly at Emily.
“I want what your father stole from my family.””
Robert raised his voice.
“Your father stole from ours.””
Jonathan smiled.
“That is what he wanted everyone to believe.””
He held up a phone.
A live video appeared on the screen.
Lily was sitting in a dark room.
Emily's heart nearly stopped.
“Lily!””
Her daughter looked toward the camera.
“Mom!””
Emily began to move.
Robert stopped her.
Jonathan's expression remained calm.
“One step closer, and you never see her again.””
Emily froze.
Jonathan looked at the brass key in her hand.
“Give me the key.””
“No.””
Jonathan's smile disappeared.
“Then I suppose we finally find out how much your father's secrets are worth to you.””
Behind him, a metal door slowly opened.
And Emily realized the person standing inside wasn't one of Jonathan's men.
It was someone she knew.
Someone who had been missing since the moment they left the house.
Diane stared.
“Mark…”
May you like
The attorney stepped into the light.
And he was holding Lily's original birth certificate.
