Chapter 4: The Letter My Father Left Behind
Emily read the first sentence twice.
Then a third time.
Her fingers tightened around the paper until it trembled.
*Emily, if you are reading this, Ryan has already discovered the second trust.*
She looked at Ryan.
He didn't move.
The expression on his face told her the letter was real.
Not just real.
Expected.
“You knew about this.””
Ryan shook his head.
“I knew there was a letter.””
“When?””
“Not until recently.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
Ryan took a breath.
“My mother found out first.””
Emily turned toward Diane.
“You knew?””
Diane's lips pressed into a thin line.
“I knew your father had safeguards.””
“Safeguards?””
“He didn't trust Ryan.””
Ryan snapped, “That's not true.””
Diane shot back, “He never trusted anyone.””
Robert stepped toward them.
“You both knew there was another trust.””
Diane looked at him.
“You knew the first trust existed.””
“I did.””
“And you kept it from Emily.””
Robert's expression hardened.
“Because her father asked me to.””
Emily stared at her father’s letter again.
There were only a few paragraphs, but every sentence felt like a door opening into a room she had never known existed.
She read aloud.
“‘Your husband will eventually discover the trust created for Lily. He will believe control passes to him if you are declared incapable. That assumption is false.’”
Ryan closed his eyes.
Emily looked up sharply.
“False?””
Mark stepped closer.
Emily continued.
“‘The successor provision was designed as a trap for anyone attempting to manipulate your legal capacity.’”
Robert slowly exhaled.
“What does that mean?””
Emily looked at Mark.
He took the letter.
“I need to see the full language.””
Ryan stepped forward.
“You don't need to.””
Mark ignored him.
He read silently for several seconds.
Then he looked at Emily.
“Your father anticipated exactly this.””
Emily's voice was barely audible.
“What did he do?””
Mark tapped the paper.
“He created a verification condition.””
“What condition?””
“An independent review.””
“By whom?””
“A neutral trustee.””
Ryan's face changed.
Emily caught it immediately.
“You know who.””
Ryan didn't answer.
“Who is the trustee?””
Mark looked toward Robert.
“I think you should sit down.””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was stronger now.
“I have spent the last year being told that I’m confused. I’m not sitting down.””
Mark nodded.
“The neutral trustee is a man named Daniel Hayes.””
Emily frowned.
She had never heard the name.
“Who is Daniel Hayes?””
Robert answered first.
“Your father's oldest business partner.””
Emily looked at her father’s letter again.
“Where is he?””
Mark hesitated.
“Dead.””
Emily's face fell.
“What?””
“He died eighteen months ago.””
Ryan gave a bitter laugh.
“That little detail changes things.””
Mark ignored him.
“The trust didn't collapse when Hayes died. Your father named a replacement.””
“Who?””
Mark looked toward the letter.
“I don't know.””
“Then how do we find out?””
Emily turned the page.
There was a second paragraph she hadn't noticed.
At the bottom was an address.
A small office building across town.
Then a set of initials.
*J.M.*
Emily looked at Robert.
“Do you recognize that?””
Robert's eyes narrowed.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Robert didn't answer immediately.
“Someone your father trusted.””
Ryan suddenly moved.
“Give me the letter.””
Robert stepped in front of him.
“No.””
Ryan's voice hardened.
“That letter belongs to my family.””
Emily stared at him.
“My father wrote it to me.””
Ryan took another step.
“And your father is dead.””
The room went completely still.
Emily's expression changed.
Robert grabbed Ryan by the shoulder and pulled him back.
“You're done.””
Ryan shoved his hand away.
“I am trying to protect everyone!””
“No,” Emily said.
Ryan turned.
“You don't understand.””
“Then make me understand.””
“You think this is about money.””
“What else would it be?””
Ryan's eyes shifted toward Lily's bedroom.
“Your father knew something.””
Emily frowned.
“About what?””
Ryan didn't answer.
Diane whispered, “Ryan.””
He looked at her.
“You said we were going to tell her.””
“Not like this.””
Emily stepped closer.
“Tell me what?””
Diane looked away.
Ryan swallowed.
“Your father wasn't only protecting money.””
Robert's expression grew darker.
“What did he discover?””
Ryan said nothing.
Emily's patience snapped.
“What did my father discover?””
Ryan finally looked at her.
“That someone in this family had been stealing from the trust for years.””
Robert froze.
Emily stared.
“Who?””
Ryan didn't answer.
Diane did.
“Your father thought it was Robert.””
Emily turned to her father.
Robert's face went pale with anger.
“That is a lie.””
“He confronted you,” Diane said.
“About what?””
“About missing funds.””
Robert stepped forward.
“I never touched that money.””
“I didn't say you did.””
“You implied it.””
Emily looked between them.
“My father accused Grandpa?””
Diane nodded.
“He suspected him.””
Robert's voice became low.
“Your father was wrong.””
“Then why did he never tell me?””
Robert looked at his daughter.
“Because he eventually believed me.””
“How?””
“Because we found where the money went.””
Emily's stomach tightened.
“Where?””
Robert looked at Ryan.
Ryan stared back.
Robert answered.
“To an account controlled by your husband.””
Emily's heart stopped.
She looked at Ryan.
“No.””
Ryan's voice cracked.
“I can explain.””
“You transferred money?””
“It wasn't what you think.””
“How much?””
Ryan remained silent.
Emily's voice sharpened.
“How much, Ryan?””
Diane interrupted.
“The money was moved temporarily.””
Emily stared at her.
“Temporarily?””
“It was meant to be returned.””
“Was it?””
No answer.
Emily looked at Mark.
“Tell me.””
Mark's jaw tightened.
“I can't give you a figure without reviewing the account.””
“Then review it.””
“I can.””
“Now.””
Mark hesitated.
Emily understood why.
“There's something else.””
Mark looked at her.
“You're afraid.””
“No.””
“Yes, you are.””
Mark glanced at the letter.
“Your father didn't want the trust opened unless a specific condition was met.””
“What condition?””
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That someone was attempting to manipulate your legal status.””
Emily's eyes moved to the forged documents.
“To me.””
“Yes.””
“What happens when there's proof?””
Mark lowered the letter.
“The trust activates.””
Emily waited.
“And?””
“The person attempting the manipulation loses access to every asset connected to the trust.””
Ryan's face went blank.
Emily looked at him.
“You lose everything.””
Ryan's expression hardened.
“You don't know what that means.””
“I know exactly what it means.””
“No, you don't.””
Ryan walked toward her.
“I did all of this because I was already trapped.””
Emily stared.
“By whom?””
Ryan looked toward Diane.
Diane shook her head.
“Don't.””
Ryan ignored her.
“They came to me first.””
“Who?””
He didn't answer.
“Who came to you?””
Ryan's breathing became uneven.
“They knew about the trust before I did.””
Mark suddenly interrupted.
“Ryan.””
Ryan looked at him.
Mark's expression was severe.
“Stop talking.””
Emily turned toward Mark.
“Why?””
Mark said nothing.
Robert stepped forward.
“Because he knows who is behind this.””
Emily looked at Ryan.
“Who?””
Ryan's eyes moved to the windows.
“It doesn't matter.””
“It matters to me.””
“They've been watching this family for years.””
“Who?””
Ryan finally whispered,
“Your father's former partner.””
Robert stared at him.
“That man is dead.””
“Not him.””
Ryan looked back at Emily.
“His son.””
A cold silence settled over the room.
Emily remembered the initials on the letter.
J.M.
She looked at Mark.
“What's the man's full name?””
Mark didn't answer.
Robert's eyes widened.
“No.””
Emily turned.
“You know him.””
Robert looked at the paper.
Then at his daughter.
“His name is Jonathan Mercer.””
Emily frowned.
“Mercer?””
Her grandfather nodded.
“Your father spent years trying to stop him.””
Ryan spoke softly.
“And now he's back.””
A noise came from upstairs.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone looked toward the ceiling.
Emily's heart started racing.
Lily.
Robert moved toward the stairs.
“Stay here.””
Emily followed him.
“I'm coming.””
They reached Lily's bedroom.
The door was open.
The room was empty.
Emily's blood turned cold.
“Lily?””
No response.
Her backpack was still on the floor.
Her window was closed.
Then Emily noticed something on the desk.
A sheet of paper.
She picked it up.
There were only four words.
*COME TO THE GARAGE ALONE.*
Emily's hand began to shake.
Robert read over her shoulder.
His expression darkened.
“Where's Lily?””
Emily looked around the room.
Then she saw the closet door.
It was slightly open.
She pulled it wide.
Empty.
Robert immediately reached for his phone.
“No signal.””
Emily's heart hammered.
Then another sound came from downstairs.
The front door slammed.
Someone was leaving.
Robert ran.
Emily followed.
They reached the living room just in time to see the front door swing shut.
Ryan was standing beside the staircase.
Diane was nowhere in sight.
Emily stared at him.
“Where is my daughter?””
Ryan didn't answer.
Robert grabbed him by the collar.
“Where is Lily?””
Ryan's eyes were filled with terror.
“I don't know.””
“You're lying.””
“I swear!””
Emily rushed toward the stairs.
Then she heard a phone vibrating.
Not hers.
Not Robert's.
Ryan's pocket.
Robert pulled it out.
The screen showed an incoming message from an unknown number.
There was an image attached.
Emily saw it first.
Her breath caught.
It was Lily.
Sitting in the back seat of a black SUV.
Alive.
Terrified.
And holding a folded piece of paper.
Under the photograph were six words:
*BRING THE ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE. ALONE.*
Emily looked at Ryan.
Then at the cabinet.
Then at the keycard still lying on the table.
Suddenly, the pieces connected.
Locker 318.
The second trust.
The missing money.
Her father's letter.
And Lily's disappearance.
Emily's voice became dangerously quiet.
“Whoever took my daughter wants something that's hidden in that locker.””
Ryan shook his head.
“No.””
Emily looked at him.
“You know what is in there.””
He stared at the photograph.
Then whispered,
“They don't want the birth certificate.””
Emily's blood ran cold.
“Then what do they want?””
Ryan looked directly into her eyes.
May you like
“They want the original trust documents.””
And behind them, Diane quietly locked the front door.
