Chapter 5: The Price of the Truth
The lock clicked behind them.
Emily turned toward the front door.
Diane stood there with one hand still resting on the deadbolt.
Her face had gone strangely calm.
Too calm.
Robert noticed it immediately.
“What did you just do?””
Diane looked at him.
“I locked the door.””
“Why?””
“So nobody leaves.””
Emily stared at her mother-in-law.
“Where is Lily?””
Diane didn't answer.
“Where is my daughter?””
“I don't know.””
“You just locked us inside a house after my daughter was taken.””
Diane's eyes hardened.
“You're making this worse.””
Emily stepped toward her.
“My daughter is twelve years old.””
“I know.””
“Then tell me where she is.””
“I can't.””
Robert's voice dropped.
“You better start talking.””
Diane looked at him for a long moment.
Then she glanced at Ryan.
Her son looked completely broken.
“Ryan,” she whispered.
“Tell her.””
Ryan shook his head.
“You tell her.””
“No.””
“You started this.””
Diane's expression changed.
“You think I wanted this?””
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“You wanted control.””
“I wanted to protect you.””
“By destroying my marriage?””
“By protecting you from a woman who was going to expose everything.””
Emily's blood ran cold.
“Expose what?””
Diane looked at her.
“Your father knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That your husband had been taking money.””
Emily's eyes moved toward Ryan.
He looked away.
“How much?””
Ryan said nothing.
Robert stepped toward him.
“How much money did you take?””
“It wasn't like that.””
“Then what was it like?””
Ryan's voice cracked.
“I borrowed it.””
Emily stared.
“You stole it.””
“I was going to put it back.””
“When?””
“When everything was fixed.””
“What needed fixing?””
Ryan swallowed.
“My company was failing.””
Emily closed her eyes.
For years, she'd believed Ryan's business was doing well.
He had told her about new clients.
New contracts.
Long nights.
Business trips.
He had smiled across dinner tables and reassured her whenever she worried about the mortgage.
She suddenly remembered the little things.
The missing account statements.
The unexplained wire transfers.
The second credit card he kept locked in his desk.
The time he had told her not to worry about a payment from a company she had never heard of.
“You used our money.””
Ryan looked at her.
“Not yours.””
Emily's expression hardened.
“You used Lily's.””
His silence confirmed it.
Robert shoved a hand against the wall.
“You stole from your own child.””
“I was trying to save the business.””
“You were trying to save yourself.””
Ryan turned toward him.
“You don't understand.””
Robert's voice became cold.
“I understand perfectly.””
The phone in Robert's hand vibrated.
Everyone froze.
Another message.
He looked at the screen.
There was no image this time.
Only a sentence.
*ONE HOUR. NO POLICE. NO LAWYERS. NO ROBERT.*
Robert read it twice.
Emily reached for the phone.
“Give me that.””
He handed it to her.
Her hands shook.
“Why do they specifically want you gone?””
Robert stared at the screen.
“Because they know I'm the one person who won't negotiate.””
Ryan whispered,
“That's not the reason.””
Emily looked at him.
“Then tell me.””
Ryan looked toward the windows.
“They're afraid of what your father left him.””
“Left who?””
Ryan swallowed.
“Your father left Robert evidence.””
Robert's expression changed.
“What evidence?””
Ryan looked at him.
“You don't remember?””
“Remember what?””
“The night your father died.””
Emily stared at her husband.
“What happened that night?””
Robert's jaw tightened.
“I wasn't there.””
Ryan shook his head.
“You were.””
“No.””
“You were at the hospital.””
Robert's eyes narrowed.
“For your father?””
Ryan nodded.
“He gave you something.””
Robert looked confused.
“What?””
Ryan answered softly.
“A key.””
Emily looked at her father.
“Dad?””
Robert didn't answer.
He seemed to be searching his memory.
Then his eyes shifted toward the staircase cabinet.
“No.””
Ryan nodded.
“You hid it.””
Robert walked toward the cabinet.
He opened a drawer beneath the shelves.
Nothing.
He opened another.
Empty.
Diane watched him carefully.
“What are you looking for?””
Robert turned.
“The key.””
Diane's face tightened.
“You don't have it.””
“You know where it is.””
She said nothing.
Robert stepped closer.
“Diane.””
“I threw it away.””
Robert stopped.
“You what?””
“I thought it was useless.””
“Why would you throw away a key?””
“Because your friend told me to.””
“Who?””
Diane's mouth closed.
Emily stepped between them.
“Who told you?””
Diane looked at her.
“Jonathan.””
Emily's heart dropped.
“Jonathan Mercer.””
Diane nodded.
“You've been working with him.””
“No.””
“You just said he told you to destroy the key.””
“I was scared.””
“Of him?””
“Yes.””
That answer changed everything.
Emily looked at Ryan.
“And you?””
Ryan rubbed both hands over his face.
“I never met him directly.””
“That's a lie.””
“No.””
“You said he came to you.””
“Through people.””
“What people?””
“I don't know their names.””
“Ryan.””
“They contacted me after my company started collapsing.””
Emily stared.
“What did they offer you?””
“A way out.””
“And in exchange?””
Ryan looked at the floor.
“Access.””
“To what?””
“To the trust.””
Emily's voice became quiet.
“So they were using you.””
“I know.””
“You helped them anyway.””
“I thought I could control it.””
Robert shook his head.
“You couldn't even control your own mother.””
Diane glared at him.
“You think you're better?””
“No.””
Robert pointed toward the message.
“I think someone has our granddaughter.””
Diane looked toward the phone.
“They won't hurt her.””
Emily's eyes flashed.
“How do you know?””
“Because they need her.””
“That doesn't comfort me.””
“It should.””
“No.””
Emily stepped closer until they were inches apart.
“You don't get to tell me how to feel while my daughter is sitting in the back of some stranger's car.””
Diane's composure cracked.
“I know where they took her.””
The room went silent.
Emily stared.
“Where?””
Diane hesitated.
“Briarwood.””
Emily grabbed the keycard from the table.
“Locker 318.””
Diane nodded.
“Yes.””
Robert looked at her.
“How do you know?””
“Because Jonathan has used that facility before.””
Robert's voice was sharp.
“Why?””
“There are records there.””
“What records?””
Diane looked toward Ryan.
“The ones your father wanted destroyed.””
Robert's face hardened.
“What records?””
“Bank records.””
“What else?””
“Photographs.””
“What else?””
Diane's eyes filled with fear.
“A video.””
Emily froze.
“What video?””
Diane swallowed.
“Your father recorded a meeting.””
“With whom?””
“Jonathan's father.””
Robert went completely still.
Emily noticed.
“You know this.””
Robert shook his head.
“I knew there was a meeting.””
“You never told me.””
“Your father told me not to.””
“Why?””
“Because the recording could destroy people.””
“Whose people?””
“Everyone involved.””
Ryan suddenly stepped toward them.
“We're wasting time.””
Emily turned.
“Then let's go.””
Robert looked at her.
“You're not going alone.””
The phone vibrated again.
Emily looked down.
Another image.
Lily.
This time she was sitting alone in a dim storage room.
She wasn't crying.
That frightened Emily more.
Her daughter was usually expressive.
Now she looked composed.
Too composed.
In her hands was a white envelope.
A message appeared beneath the photograph.
*SHE HAS THE ENVELOPE.*
Emily's throat tightened.
“What envelope?””
Ryan went pale.
“I don't know.””
Diane whispered,
“I do.””
Emily looked at her.
“What?””
Diane's voice trembled.
“Your father gave it to Lily.””
Emily's eyes widened.
“My father died four years ago.””
“He gave it to me first.””
“Why would you have something from my father?””
Diane looked away.
“Because he knew I was involved.””
Robert's voice turned icy.
“Diane.””
She looked at him.
“Your father suspected me of helping Ryan.””
Emily stared.
“You were helping him before he died?””
“Not with the money.””
“Then with what?””
“The documents.””
“What documents?””
“The original trust.””
Robert's expression changed.
“You had them?””
Diane nodded.
“Your father gave me copies.””
“Why?””
“He believed I could protect them.””
Robert gave a bitter laugh.
“You destroyed them.””
“No.””
“Then where are they?””
Diane looked at Emily.
“I gave them to Lily.””
Emily's mind raced.
“Why?””
“Because I knew one day they would come for them.””
The phone vibrated again.
A final message appeared.
*COME TO THE STORAGE FACILITY. BRING RYAN. ROBERT STAYS BEHIND. EMILY COMES ALONE.*
Emily stared at the words.
Robert immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“They have Lily.””
“I don't care.””
“You have to.””
“They specifically said they don't want me.””
“Exactly.””
Robert looked at her.
“You think that's a coincidence?””
Emily didn't answer.
He stepped closer.
“They want to separate you from everyone who might protect you.””
“I know.””
“So we don't do what they ask.””
Emily looked at the photograph of Lily.
“If I don't go, what happens to her?””
No one answered.
Ryan suddenly spoke.
“I'll go.””
Emily turned.
“What?””
“I'll go with you.””
“You're part of this.””
“I know.””
“You lied to me.””
“I know.””
“You stole from us.””
“I know.””
“You helped them.””
Ryan's eyes filled with shame.
“I know.””
He took a breath.
“But I know something they don't.””
“What?””
Ryan looked toward the black box on the table.
“I know where the original key is.””
Robert stared at him.
“You said you didn't.””
“I lied.””
“Where?””
Ryan pointed toward the fireplace.
“Behind the stone.””
Robert immediately moved.
He pulled at a decorative stone near the base of the fireplace.
It shifted.
Behind it was a tiny metal compartment.
Inside sat an old brass key.
Emily stared.
The same key her father had supposedly given Robert.
Robert picked it up.
The metal was worn with age.
There was a single engraved number.
*318.*
Emily's chest tightened.
Ryan looked at the key.
“They're expecting us to bring the documents.””
Robert closed his fist around it.
“But they don't know we have this.””
Emily looked at him.
“What does the key open?””
Robert stared at the number.
“Not the locker.””
“Then what?””
He turned the key over.
There was a tiny engraving on the back.
A single word.
*VAULT.*
Before anyone could speak, the lights in the house suddenly went out.
Lily's photograph disappeared from the phone screen.
A second later, every phone in the room began ringing at once.
Emily's.
Robert's.
Ryan's.
Diane's.
Four separate calls.
Four unknown numbers.
And from somewhere upstairs came the unmistakable sound of a child's voice.
“Mom?””
Emily's blood froze.
Lily.
Robert looked up.
“That isn't possible.””
The voice came again.
“Mom, don't come upstairs.””
Then the call on Emily's phone connected by itself.
A man's whisper filled the darkness.
“You have thirty minutes.””
A pause.
Then:
May you like
“Bring the key.””
The line went dead.
