Calm

Chapter 3: The Man Waiting Upstairs

Emily ran for the staircase.

Robert moved with her, one hand already reaching back toward the cabinet to keep the black box from falling. Ryan shouted something behind them, but she barely heard it.

Her entire body had gone cold.

“Lily!””

“Mom!””

Emily reached the landing.

The hallway looked exactly as it had that morning.

Family photographs lined the walls. Lily’s science project sat crooked on a small table. A jacket hung from the bedroom door.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

Then Emily saw the bedroom door standing open.

Lily was pressed against the far wall.

A man stood between her and the hallway.

He was tall, dressed in a charcoal suit without a tie.

Emily knew him.

Her breath caught.

“Mark?””

Mark Ellis turned.

He had been the Carter family's attorney for nearly eight years.

He had drafted their wills.

Reviewed their mortgage.

Handled the paperwork for the trust created after Lily was born.

He had attended Emily's father's retirement dinner.

He had even sent Lily a birthday card every year.

Now he stood inside her daughter's bedroom.

Alone.

Emily stared at him.

“What are you doing here?””

Mark lifted his hands slowly.

“Emily, listen to me.””

Robert stepped in front of his daughter.

“You have five seconds to explain why you're standing in a twelve-year-old girl's bedroom.””

Mark looked at Robert.

“I'm here because I was told there might be a problem.””

“By whom?””

Mark hesitated.

Emily saw the answer on his face.

“Ryan?””

Mark did not respond.

Robert stepped closer.

“Did my son-in-law send you?””

“I was contacted this afternoon.””

“For what?””

Mark glanced toward Lily.

“She called for help.””

Emily looked at her daughter.

“Why?””

Lily's eyes were wide.

“I heard someone downstairs when Grandma and Grandpa were fighting.””

Mark immediately said, “I came through the side entrance.””

Emily's eyes narrowed.

“You have a key?””

Mark nodded.

“Your husband gave it to me years ago.””

Robert looked down the stairs.

His expression hardened.

“So you were already authorized to enter.””

“Only for emergencies.””

Emily stared at Mark.

“What emergency?””

Mark looked at the bruises around her neck.

“That.””

Emily said nothing.

Mark took a careful breath.

“Ryan told me you were in danger of hurting yourself.””

A stunned silence followed.

Emily felt like the floor had tilted beneath her.

“Excuse me?””

“He said you had become increasingly unpredictable.””

“That sounds familiar.””

Mark continued.

“I was supposed to evaluate the situation.””

Robert's voice was dangerously calm.

“You're her attorney.””

“I represent the family trust.””

“No. You represent Emily.””

Mark looked uncomfortable.

“Not exactly.””

Emily felt something sink inside her.

“What does that mean?””

Mark didn't answer immediately.

That frightened her more than any accusation.

Lily moved closer to her mother.

“Mom, he was asking me questions.””

Emily turned.

“What questions?””

“About whether you forget things.””

Mark looked at Lily.

“I was trying to understand the household.””

“No,” Lily said firmly.

“You were asking me what Mom does wrong.””

Mark's face tightened.

Emily's eyes filled with anger.

“You interviewed my daughter?””

“It wasn't an interview.””

“What was it?””

“A conversation.””

“With a twelve-year-old?””

Mark sighed.

“Emily, the situation has become complicated.””

“No.””

She pointed toward the stairs.

“My daughter stays out of this.””

Mark's expression shifted.

“You need to understand what is happening.””

“I understand more than I did twenty minutes ago.””

Robert stepped beside her.

“Let's hear it.””

Mark looked at him.

“You're not a party to the trust.””

“My daughter is.””

“And I am the attorney responsible for protecting its terms.””

Emily stared at him.

“From whom?””

Mark paused.

“From whoever is attempting to gain control of it improperly.””

Emily's eyes narrowed.

“You know.””

“I know there are competing interests.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Mark glanced toward the hallway camera mounted near the ceiling.

Emily followed his gaze.

“Why are you looking at that?””

Mark's face went blank.

Robert noticed too.

“What camera?””

Emily pointed upward.

Robert stepped beneath it.

A tiny red light was blinking.

Emily's stomach dropped.

“There wasn't a camera there.””

Mark said nothing.

Robert looked at him.

“Who installed it?””

Mark answered carefully.

“I don't know.””

Emily looked toward the staircase.

Then toward the living room.

Then back at Mark.

“How long has that camera been recording us?””

Mark's silence was enough.

Robert's jaw clenched.

“You've been watching my daughter.””

“No.””

“Someone has.””

Mark looked at Emily.

“Emily, please. We need to leave this house.””

“Why?””

“Because this is no longer a safe environment.””

“You're the one who came into my daughter's bedroom.””

Mark took a step back.

“I came because I was asked to intervene.””

“By Ryan.””

“Yes.””

The word landed heavily.

Emily closed her eyes for a moment.

Every secret meeting.

Every missing document.

Every strange conversation.

It was all connected.

Then Lily spoke.

“Mom.””

Emily turned.

Lily pointed toward the closet.

“I found this.””

She held up a small keycard.

Emily recognized the logo.

It belonged to Briarwood Storage.

The same storage facility named on the note in the black box.

Emily looked at Mark.

“Locker 318.””

His face changed.

Robert noticed.

“You know that locker.””

Mark swallowed.

“I've heard of it.””

“From whom?””

He didn't answer.

Emily stepped toward him.

“Mark, look at me.””

He did.

“What is in Locker 318?””

“I can't tell you.””

“You can.””

“I have a professional obligation.””

“You helped create this.””

“I am telling you there is information you were never supposed to see.””

Emily went completely still.

“So there is something there.””

Mark looked away.

“Yes.””

“What?””

“I don't know everything.””

“Enough.””

Mark exhaled.

“The locker was established under a corporate name.””

Emily frowned.

“What corporate name?””

“Carter Family Holdings.””

Robert looked at Emily.

“You have a company called that?””

“No.””

Mark nodded slowly.

“That's the problem.””

Emily's heartbeat accelerated.

“Then who owns it?””

Mark hesitated.

“On paper?””

“Yes.””

“Ryan.””

The hallway seemed to shrink.

Emily shook her head.

“Ryan doesn't own that company.””

Mark looked at her.

“He does now.””

Robert immediately asked, “When?””

“Fourteen months ago.””

Emily's face drained.

“That was when Ryan told me he was restructuring our finances.””

“Yes.””

“He told me it was for tax reasons.””

Mark's expression remained grim.

“That was part of it.””

Emily looked down at the keycard in Lily's hand.

“What does the company own?””

Mark remained silent.

Robert said, “Answer her.””

“Several accounts.””

“Personal accounts?””

“Some.””

Emily's voice cracked.

“Mine?””

Mark nodded.

“Your name is attached to them.””

“But I never opened them.””

“They were opened using documents bearing your signature.””

The same forged signature.

The same signature appearing on the petition.

Emily pressed a hand against the wall.

For a moment she thought she might collapse.

Then Lily came closer.

“Mom?””

Emily straightened.

“No.””

She looked at Mark.

“No more surprises.””

Mark seemed to understand.

“There is one thing you need to know.””

“What?””

“I didn't sign the guardianship petition.””

Ryan's name wasn't on it either.

Emily stared at him.

“Then who did?””

Mark's voice dropped.

“Diane.””

Emily's eyes widened.

“That's impossible.””

“She submitted the initial request through another attorney.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I was removed from the matter.””

“By whom?””

Mark looked downstairs.

Emily followed his gaze.

Ryan stood at the bottom of the staircase.

His face had changed again.

Not frightened.

Not angry.

Determined.

“By me,” Ryan said.

Robert stepped forward.

“You stay where you are.””

Ryan ignored him.

He looked directly at Mark.

“You weren't supposed to come here.””

Mark's expression tightened.

“I know.””

Ryan looked at Emily.

“You don't understand what you've found.””

Emily descended one step.

“Then explain it.””

“You found pieces.””

“Of what?””

Ryan's eyes moved to the keycard in Lily's hand.

“Of the reason I did all of this.””

Emily felt a terrible certainty forming.

“Did what?””

Ryan looked at his mother.

Diane was standing near the cabinet downstairs.

She looked exhausted.

But not surprised.

Ryan's voice was barely above a whisper.

“The family business.””

Emily stared.

“We don't have a family business.””

Ryan gave a humorless smile.

“You thought you didn't.””

Robert frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Ryan finally looked at him.

“Your daughter's father left more than a house when he died.””

Emily went still.

“My father?””

Ryan nodded.

“He left a financial structure that was never publicly disclosed.””

Robert's expression sharpened.

“What structure?””

“A trust.””

“I know about the trust.””

“Not this one.””

Ryan reached inside his jacket.

Robert immediately tensed.

“Slowly.””

Ryan pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

He held it up.

“A second trust.””

Emily looked at the document.

At the bottom was a name she knew.

Her father's.

And beside it was another name.

Ryan's.

Emily stared at him.

“You were listed as a beneficiary?””

“No.””

Ryan's eyes met hers.

“I was listed as the successor.””

The words made no sense.

Then Emily remembered something.

Her father had once told her that the money left behind for Lily would be protected no matter what happened.

She had assumed he meant ordinary estate planning.

But Ryan was talking about something else.

Robert stepped onto the landing.

“Why was I never told?””

Ryan's jaw tightened.

“Because your daughter was never supposed to find out.””

Emily felt the room spinning.

“Why?””

Ryan looked at her with a mixture of fear and regret.

“Because the trust contains something worth far more than money.””

Diane whispered from downstairs,

“Ryan, stop.””

He turned toward her.

“You wanted the truth.””

Diane's face hardened.

“I wanted control.””

Emily's eyes narrowed.

“There it is.””

Ryan looked back at Emily.

“You want to know why we tried to have you declared incompetent?””

“Yes.””

“Because the trust has a condition.””

Emily waited.

Ryan's voice dropped.

“If you are legally declared incapable of managing your affairs, control transfers automatically.””

“To Lily?””

Ryan shook his head.

“To the successor.””

Emily looked at him.

“You.””

“Yes.””

Robert stepped forward.

“Then this whole thing was about stealing control of the trust.””

Ryan's expression tightened.

“You call it stealing.””

“What else would it be?””

Ryan looked at Emily.

“It was the only way.””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

She held up the forged documents.

“It was your way.””

Ryan's eyes flickered.

Then Mark suddenly said,

“Emily, there's something else.””

Everyone turned.

Mark reached into his briefcase.

He removed a sealed envelope.

“This was delivered to me yesterday.””

He handed it to Emily.

She looked at the handwriting.

Her heart stopped.

She knew that handwriting.

It belonged to her father.

The man had been dead for nearly four years.

Emily looked up slowly.

“This can't be.””

Mark said nothing.

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a single handwritten letter.

The first sentence made her hands go numb.

*Emily, if you are reading this, Ryan has already discovered the second trust.*

Emily stopped breathing.

Robert stared at the page.

Diane closed her eyes.

May you like

And Ryan whispered,

“Then we're already too late.””
