Chapter 6: The Secret Behind Locker 318
The darkness lasted only a few seconds, but to Emily it felt endless.
She stood beneath the dead chandelier, staring toward the staircase.
“Mom?””
The voice had sounded exactly like Lily.
The same pitch.
The same slight tremble.
The same way she said the word when she was frightened.
Emily took one step toward the stairs.
Robert caught her arm.
“Wait.””
“That was Lily.””
“I know.””
“So let go.””
“No.””
Emily pulled against his grip.
“My daughter is upstairs.””
Robert's voice remained low.
“Someone is trying to make you believe she is.””
Emily froze.
Ryan was staring at his phone.
“That's impossible,” he whispered.
Diane backed toward the wall.
“What did they do?””
Robert looked at her.
“What do you know?””
“Nothing.””
“You're lying again.””
Diane shook her head.
“I don't know how they got her voice.””
Emily stared at the staircase.
The house was silent.
Then the lights flickered once.
Twice.
The chandelier came back on.
Everything looked normal.
Except for one thing.
The front door was open.
Cold evening air drifted inside.
Robert immediately moved toward it.
Nobody had heard it open.
He checked the porch, then the driveway.
Empty.
Emily hurried to the doorway.
“Where's Lily?””
“Stay inside.””
“She could be out there.””
“No.””
Robert pointed toward the driveway.
“Tire tracks.””
Emily looked.
Two deep marks cut through the dust near the curb.
“They were here.””
Ryan moved beside her.
“They could still be nearby.””
Robert turned sharply.
“Then why are we standing here?””
He pulled his phone out.
“No service.””
Emily checked hers.
Nothing.
Ryan looked toward the hallway.
“We have to go to Briarwood.””
Robert shook his head.
“We're not walking into a trap.””
“They have Lily.””
“We don't know that.””
Emily turned to him.
“I do.””
“How?””
She held up the phone.
Another message had appeared.
A photograph.
Lily was standing beside a row of metal storage doors.
Her school backpack was gone.
She wore the same clothes she had worn home.
Her hands were clasped in front of her.
She was looking directly into the camera.
Below the photograph:
*SHE'S SAFE FOR NOW.*
Emily's eyes burned.
“Look at her.””
Robert studied the image.
Ryan stepped closer.
“That's Briarwood.””
“How do you know?””
“I've been there.””
Emily looked at him.
“You've been to Locker 318.””
Ryan didn't answer.
“You've been there.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Ryan looked at the floor.
“Because I was supposed to retrieve something.””
“What?””
“The original trust.””
“Did you find it?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because the locker was empty.””
Robert stared at him.
“When?””
“Two weeks ago.””
Emily's voice sharpened.
“You knew about the locker two weeks ago?””
Ryan swallowed.
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing.””
“I was trying to fix it.””
“By helping the people who took my daughter?””
“I didn't know they'd take Lily.””
Robert seized Ryan by the shirt.
“You keep saying that like it makes you innocent.””
Ryan didn't resist.
“I didn't know.””
Robert shoved him against the wall.
“You've known enough.””
Emily stepped between them.
“Stop.””
Robert looked at her.
“Emily—”
“We need him.””
Robert released Ryan.
Ryan straightened his shirt.
“Thank you.””
Emily glared at him.
“Don't mistake that for forgiveness.””
“I don't.””
Diane suddenly spoke.
“The vault isn't at Briarwood.””
Robert turned.
“What?””
“The locker only holds the key.””
Emily stared.
“You said the key opened a vault.””
“It does.””
“Where?””
Diane looked toward the floor.
“I don't know.””
Robert's expression hardened.
“You know more than you're saying.””
Diane's voice trembled.
“Because your father never told me.””
Emily stepped forward.
“But you had the key.””
“I had a copy.””
“Where is it?””
Diane looked at her son.
Ryan answered.
“She destroyed it.””
Diane whispered,
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“You were protecting yourself.””
Diane flinched.
Emily reached for her phone again.
A countdown had appeared beneath the last message.
*00:27:14*
Twenty-seven minutes.
Robert looked at it.
“We go.””
Emily nodded.
Ryan immediately said, “I'll drive.””
Robert shook his head.
“I am.””
Ryan looked at him.
“They specifically said you stay behind.””
“Exactly.””
Emily understood.
“They're trying to keep you away because you know something.””
Robert looked at her.
“What?””
“You were at the hospital the night Dad died.””
Robert's face changed.
“You remember what happened?””
“Not everything.””
Emily waited.
Robert sighed.
“Your father called me that night.””
“Why?””
“He told me someone had gotten into his office.””
“Who?””
“He didn't know.””
“Then why did he call you?””
“Because he'd found evidence.””
Emily's heartbeat quickened.
“What evidence?””
Robert looked toward the black box.
“An account number.””
“Whose account?””
“Diane's.””
Diane immediately shook her head.
“That isn't true.””
Robert looked at her.
“Your name was on the transfer records.””
“I didn't make those transfers.””
“Maybe not.””
“What does that mean?””
Robert stared at her.
“It means someone used you.””
Emily stepped between them.
“To do what?””
“To move money without creating a direct trail.””
Diane's eyes filled with fear.
“Ryan…”
Ryan looked at her.
“You never told me that.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
“From him.””
Emily looked at Robert.
“Dad, what did you discover?””
Robert took a slow breath.
“Your father believed someone inside the family was being pressured.””
“Who?””
“Ryan.””
Emily looked at her husband.
Ryan's eyes dropped.
“By Jonathan?””
“Yes.””
“And the money?””
“Was leverage.””
Emily understood.
“They threatened you.””
Ryan nodded.
“They said they'd destroy me if I didn't cooperate.””
“You could have told me.””
“They had photographs.””
“Of what?””
Ryan's face turned pale.
“Things I did.””
Emily's eyes narrowed.
“What things?””
Ryan looked at her.
“Bad things.””
She waited.
He didn't elaborate.
“That's not enough.””
“I know.””
“Were they illegal?””
Ryan swallowed.
“Some.””
Robert stepped toward him.
“What did they have?””
“A recording.””
“Of you?””
“Yes.””
“Doing what?””
Ryan shook his head.
“Not here.””
Emily's frustration boiled.
“My daughter is missing.””
Ryan nodded.
“I know.””
“Then stop hiding things.””
Ryan looked at Robert.
“Your father wasn't murdered.””
The room fell silent.
Emily stopped breathing.
“What?””
Robert stared at Ryan.
“What did you just say?””
Ryan repeated himself.
“Your father wasn't murdered.””
“You're saying he died naturally.””
“No.””
“Then what are you saying?””
Ryan's voice dropped.
“He was helped.””
Emily's face went cold.
“By whom?””
Ryan looked at Diane.
Diane shook her head violently.
“No.””
“Tell her.””
“No!””
Robert grabbed Ryan again.
“What do you know about my friend?””
Ryan struggled.
“Let me go.””
“What do you know?””
“Everything I was told.””
“By whom?””
Ryan stared directly at Emily.
“Jonathan Mercer.””
Robert shoved him backward.
Emily felt dizzy.
“No.””
Ryan nodded.
“He said your father's death was necessary.””
“Why?””
“Because he was going to expose the trust.””
“That's impossible.””
“He had the evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“The recording.””
Emily looked toward the envelope.
“My father's letter.””
Ryan nodded.
“The letter was never the important part.””
Emily frowned.
“Then what is?””
“The recording.””
He pointed toward the brass key.
“That key leads to the place where the recording was hidden.””
Robert stared at it.
“Where?””
Ryan shook his head.
“I don't know.””
“You said you knew.””
“I know where the trail begins.””
“Where?””
“Briarwood.””
Emily grabbed her coat.
“We're going.””
Robert looked at her.
“I said we go together.””
Ryan said, “They won't let us all in.””
“Then we'll make them.””
Diane stepped forward.
“I can't go.””
Emily looked at her.
“You're coming.””
“Why?””
“Because every time you say you don't know something, you turn out to know more.””
Diane's eyes hardened.
“I have protected this family for years.””
Emily answered quietly,
“No. You've protected secrets.””
She walked toward the door.
Robert followed.
Ryan stayed beside them.
Diane reluctantly joined.
The four of them stepped into the night.
As Robert started the vehicle, Emily looked back at the house.
For a moment, she saw Lily's bedroom window.
The curtain moved.
Emily froze.
“Stop.””
Robert looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed.
“There.””
Everyone stared.
The curtain moved again.
Then a small hand pressed against the glass.
Emily's heart jumped.
“Lily!””
She ran toward the house.
Robert grabbed her.
“Wait!””
Emily looked again.
The hand disappeared.
The curtain fell still.
Robert rushed inside.
The three others followed.
They climbed the stairs.
Emily reached Lily's bedroom first.
The room was empty.
But on the desk sat something new.
A small silver bracelet.
Lily's bracelet.
Emily picked it up.
Her daughter's name was engraved across the inside.
*LILY.*
Beneath it was another inscription Emily had never seen before.
*WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT, LOOK UNDER THE FLOOR.*
Robert immediately looked down.
“Move the rug.””
Emily pulled it aside.
There was a narrow wooden panel beneath it.
Robert knelt.
He pried it up.
A hollow compartment was hidden underneath.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
Emily pulled it out.
Her father's handwriting covered the front.
*FOR EMILY — ONLY AFTER LILY IS IN DANGER.*
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Not of money.
Not of a trust.
Not of any family member.
It was a photograph of Jonathan Mercer.
Standing beside a hospital bed.
And beside him stood another person.
Emily recognized the face instantly.
She looked at Ryan.
“You said you never met him.””
Ryan's eyes widened.
“I haven't.””
Emily pointed to the photograph.
“Then explain why you're in the room.””
Ryan stared at the image.
His face went white.
“I don't remember that.””
Robert took the photograph.
“You were there.””
Ryan backed away.
“I swear I don't remember.””
Diane looked at the picture.
She covered her mouth.
“Oh, God.””
Emily turned toward her.
“What?””
Diane whispered,
“That was the night your father died.””
No one moved.
Then Ryan's phone vibrated.
One final message appeared.
*NOW YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO HER GRANDFATHER.*
Emily looked at the photograph again.
Her father's hospital bed.
Jonathan Mercer.
Ryan.
And in the corner of the image, barely visible behind the curtain, stood a woman.
Emily recognized her too.
Diane.
Her mother-in-law.
Alive with fear.
Standing over her dying father.
Emily slowly looked up.
“How long have you been lying to me?””
Diane's lips trembled.
“Since the night your father died.””
Outside, thunder rolled across the dark sky.
And somewhere across town, the countdown continued.
Twenty minutes.
May you like
Then nineteen.
And Lily was still waiting.
