Chapter 9: The Signature That Could Destroy Everything
The room felt frozen.
Aaliyah stared at the paper in Rachel’s hand.
She didn’t understand.
“What is that?””
Rachel smiled.
“Something you signed.””
David immediately stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
Rachel held it away.
“No.””
Her confidence returned.
Because she finally had something.
Something she believed could protect her.
“You want to accuse me of stealing?””
She looked at David.
“Fine.””
Then she looked at Aaliyah.
“But maybe you should ask your daughter what she agreed to.””
Aaliyah’s heart raced.
“I never agreed to anything.””
Rachel raised an eyebrow.
“Are you sure?””
She handed the document over.
Aaliyah took it.
She read the first lines.
Her face changed.
It was a permission form.
A financial document.
But she didn’t remember signing it.
“I didn’t sign this.””
Rachel laughed.
“Your signature is right there.””
Aaliyah stared.
And then she remembered.
Years ago.
When she was younger.
Rachel had brought her papers.
She told her they were school forms.
She told her it was normal.
She told her not to worry.
Aaliyah had trusted her.
Because she was family.
David looked at the document carefully.
His expression changed.
“This isn’t valid.””
Rachel’s smile faded.
“What?””
“She was a minor.””
“So?””
“She couldn’t legally approve this without proper authorization.””
Rachel’s face tightened.
David continued.
“And this signature…”
He looked closer.
“Doesn’t match her handwriting from that year.””
Aaliyah looked shocked.
“Are you saying…”
David looked at Rachel.
“I’m saying someone may have forged a document.””
For the first time, Rachel looked afraid.
Only for a second.
But everyone saw it.
Aaliyah stepped back.
All those years.
All those moments where she wondered if she was overreacting.
Maybe she wasn’t.
Maybe she had been ignoring the truth because accepting it hurt too much.
Rachel quickly recovered.
“You’re making assumptions.””
David shook his head.
“No.””
He held up the paper.
“I’m asking questions.””
And questions were dangerous.
Because lies depended on nobody asking them.
Later that night, Mia called Aaliyah again.
“I’m sorry.””
Aaliyah sighed.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because I keep finding out more things I should have known.””
Aaliyah stayed quiet.
Mia continued.
“I thought I hated you because you had more than me.””
Aaliyah looked down.
“But now I think…”
She paused.
“I hated you because my mom taught me to.””
That sentence stayed with Aaliyah.
Because it explained so much.
But it also raised another question.
If Rachel had manipulated Mia for years…
What else had she done?
The next day, David received a call from his attorney.
The investigation had uncovered something.
Something much bigger than a burned dress.
Something that could change the entire family forever.
Because Rachel hadn’t just tried to take money.
She had been hiding another secret.
A secret involving Aaliyah’s mother.

And when David heard the truth…
He realized the past was not what he thought it was.
