Chapter 7: The Secret Hidden Behind The Perfect Family Image

For the first time in years, Mia felt like she was standing on the wrong side of the story.

Not because people were judging her.

Not because strangers online were criticizing her.

But because she finally understood what she had done.

She had spent so much time trying to prove that Aaliyah didn’t deserve the love she received that she never noticed something important.

She was becoming someone she didn’t even recognize.

The girl who burned the dress wasn’t just angry.

She was insecure.

She was afraid.

She was convinced that if Aaliyah looked successful, then somehow it meant Mia looked like a failure.

But now, standing in front of everyone, Mia saw the damage she had caused.

And she couldn’t ignore it anymore.

Rachel stared at her daughter like she had betrayed her.

“You’re seriously taking her side?””

Mia shook her head.

“This isn’t about taking sides.””

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“Of course it is.””

“No,” Mia said.

Her voice was quieter than usual.

“This is about me finally admitting what I did.””

The crowd around them became silent.

Aaliyah looked at Mia carefully.

She expected anger.

She expected another trick.

But Mia looked different.

For once, there was no performance.

No fake confidence.

No perfect smile.

Just regret.

David stepped closer.

“Mia.””

She looked at him.

“I know I hurt her.””

David didn’t respond.

“I know saying sorry doesn’t fix it.””

Her eyes moved toward Aaliyah.

“But I’m sorry.””

Aaliyah didn’t know what to say.

Because for so long, she imagined this moment.

She imagined Mia apologizing.

She imagined feeling satisfied.

But now that it was happening, it didn’t feel like victory.

It felt sad.

Because behind all the cruelty was a person who had been struggling too.

Aaliyah took a breath.

“I believe you’re sorry.””

Mia looked surprised.

“But?””

Aaliyah looked at her.

“But I still need time.””

Mia nodded slowly.

“That’s fair.””

Rachel rolled her eyes.

“This is ridiculous.””

Everyone looked at her.

She continued.

“You’re all acting like Mia is some monster.””

David’s expression hardened.

“No one said that.””

“But you’re treating her like one.””

Aaliyah finally spoke.

“No.””

Her voice was calm.

“We’re treating her like someone who made a choice.””

Rachel opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Because she knew Aaliyah was right.

Everyone made choices.

Mia chose to burn the dress.

Rachel chose to defend her.

And David chose to finally protect his daughter.

Nobody was innocent.

But not everyone was willing to admit it.

That evening, Mia sat alone in her room at her grandmother’s house.

The room felt unfamiliar.

The walls were decorated with old family photos.

Pictures of holidays.

Birthdays.

Celebrations.

Pictures where everyone looked happy.

But Mia knew something now.

A picture could show a perfect family.

It couldn’t prove one existed.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Aaliyah.

For a moment, Mia thought about ignoring it.

Then she opened it.

*I don’t hate you. I hope you know that.*

Mia stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

*But I hope you understand that forgiveness doesn’t mean pretending nothing happened.*

Mia swallowed.

That was the hardest thing.

Not being forgiven.

Being forced to actually change.

She typed a response.

Deleted it.

Typed again.

Finally, she sent:

*I understand.*

It was simple.

But it was honest.

And honesty was something Mia had avoided for a long time.

Meanwhile, David was sitting in his office looking at old documents.

Aaliyah walked past and noticed his serious expression.

“Dad?””

He quickly closed the folder.

“What are you doing awake?””

She smiled slightly.

“Same question.””

David sighed.

“Fair.””

She sat across from him.

“Is everything okay?””

For a moment, he didn’t answer.

Then he opened the folder again.

Inside were financial papers.

Old messages.

Documents from years ago.

Aaliyah frowned.

“What is that?””

David hesitated.

Then he said something she never expected.

“Your mother left something behind.””

Aaliyah froze.

Her mother.

A subject they rarely discussed.

“What do you mean?””

David looked at the papers.

“Before she passed away, she created a trust for you.””

Aaliyah stared.

“A trust?””

He nodded.

“She wanted to make sure you had something for your future.””

Aaliyah felt overwhelmed.

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because I didn’t want money to become the thing you depended on.””

She looked confused.

“What?””

David sighed.

“I wanted you to know your value wasn’t connected to what you had.””

Aaliyah looked down.

That sounded exactly like her father.

He had always wanted her to become strong.

But now she wondered something.

“What does this have to do with Rachel and Mia?””

David became quiet.

And that silence worried her.

“Dad?””

He finally spoke.

“Because I found out something.””

“What?””

David looked at her.

“Someone tried to access that trust.””

Aaliyah’s heart stopped.

“Who?””

David didn’t answer immediately.

But he didn’t need to.

The look on his face said everything.

And Aaliyah suddenly understood.

This was never only about a dress.

May you like

It was bigger.

Much bigger.
