Chapter 10: The Truth Buried With Her Mother’s Memory

David had always believed he knew the entire story.

He believed he understood the years before Aaliyah lost her mother.

He believed he understood why his wife’s final months had been difficult.

He believed he understood why certain documents existed and why certain conversations were never finished.

But the phone call from his attorney changed everything.

There were missing pieces.

Pieces someone had intentionally hidden.

And now those pieces were coming back.

David sat in his office, staring at the old files spread across his desk.

His hands were still.

His mind was not.

“David,” his attorney said over the phone, “I need you to understand something. This information is sensitive.””

David looked at the documents in front of him.

“What did you find?””

A pause.

Then the answer came.

“Rachel knew about your wife’s concerns before she passed away.””

David froze.

“What concerns?””

“The trust. The financial arrangements. The possibility that someone might try to interfere with Aaliyah’s inheritance.””

His jaw tightened.

“My wife knew?””

“Yes.””

David leaned back slowly.

All these years, he thought he was protecting Aaliyah from pain.

But what if he had been protecting her from the wrong thing?

“What else?””

The attorney continued.

“Your wife documented conversations she had with Rachel.””

David closed his eyes.

Conversations.

Not accusations.

Not rumors.

Evidence.

“Send me everything.””

“I already did.””

When the call ended, David sat there for a long time.

Then he opened the first file.

The first page contained a handwritten note from Aaliyah’s mother.

A note written years ago.

A note he had never seen.

His heart sank as he read the words.

*David, if you are reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen. Please remember one thing: protect Aaliyah’s heart before you protect anything else. Money can be replaced. Trust cannot.*

David stopped.

Because those words sounded exactly like her.

His wife had always understood people better than he did.

She saw things beneath the surface.

He continued reading.

The note explained that she had become uncomfortable with Rachel’s questions about the trust.

At first, she thought Rachel was simply curious.

Then the questions became more specific.

How much money was involved.

Who had access.

What would happen if David died.

What rights would a spouse have.

The questions weren’t casual.

They were strategic.

David felt a deep sadness.

Not anger.

Sadness.

Because his wife had noticed.

And she had been afraid.

But she had kept it quiet because she didn’t want to destroy the family.

The same mistake Aaliyah had made.

Trying to keep peace.

Even when peace was hurting her.

When David finally came downstairs, Aaliyah immediately knew something was wrong.

She had learned her father’s expressions.

She knew when he was tired.

She knew when he was stressed.

And she knew when something had broken inside him.

“Dad?””

He sat beside her.

“We need to talk.””

Her stomach tightened.

“About Rachel?””

He nodded.

“But also about your mother.””

Aaliyah went quiet.

She loved talking about her mother.

But it was also painful.

Because every memory came with the reminder that she was gone.

“What happened?””

David took a breath.

“Your mother knew Rachel was asking questions about your trust.””

Aaliyah stared.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

David looked down.

“Because I didn’t know.””

The answer shocked her.

“What?””

“She kept it from me.””

Aaliyah looked confused.

“Why would she?””

“Because she was protecting everyone.””

Aaliyah whispered.

“That sounds like something I would do.””

David gave a sad smile.

“Exactly.””

He handed her the note.

Aaliyah’s hands shook as she read her mother’s handwriting.

She had seen it before.

Old birthday cards.

School notes.

Little reminders.

But this was different.

This was her mother speaking from a place of fear.

When she finished, tears fell onto the paper.

“She knew.””

David nodded.

“She always knew.””

Aaliyah wiped her face.

“I wish I could have talked to her.””

David placed his hand over hers.

“She would be proud of you.””

Aaliyah looked at him.

“Even now?””

“Especially now.””

Meanwhile, Rachel realized she had lost control.

The document she brought to David had failed.

The accusations online were falling apart.

Mia was no longer protecting her.

And now David knew too much.

Rachel sat in her apartment, staring at old photographs.

A perfect family.

That was what she wanted.

A perfect family.

But she had confused perfection with control.

And when things didn’t go the way she wanted, she tried to force them.

Her phone rang.

Mia.

Rachel almost ignored it.

But she answered.

“What?””

Mia was quiet.

“I know about the documents.””

Rachel’s expression changed.

“What documents?””

“Don’t lie to me.””

The confidence in Mia’s voice surprised her.

“You used me.””

Rachel scoffed.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“Yes, you do.””

Mia’s voice cracked.

“You made me hate her.””

Rachel said nothing.

“You kept telling me Aaliyah was the reason Dad looked at me differently.””

“That was your insecurity.””

“No.””

Mia’s voice became stronger.

“That was yours.””

The words hit Rachel.

Because Mia was right.

Rachel had always been afraid.

Afraid of losing.

Afraid of being second.

Afraid that David would never see her as important as his first wife.

And instead of facing those feelings, she created a competition.

One that destroyed everyone.

“I’m done,” Mia said.

Rachel frowned.

“What?””

“I’m done covering for you.””

The call ended.

And for the first time, Rachel realized something terrifying.

She was alone.
