Chapter 5: The Secret Rachel Tried To Hide
Three days later, Aaliyah thought the worst was finally over.
She was wrong.
Because secrets rarely disappear.
They wait.
And eventually, they come looking for you.
Aaliyah was preparing for graduation again.
Not because the dress could be saved.
It couldn’t.
But because she refused to let Mia steal the memory completely.
Her father had helped her find another dress.
Nothing extravagant.
Nothing that made her feel like someone else.
Just something simple.
Something that felt like her.
As she stood in front of the mirror, she realized something.
The first dress represented the girl she used to be.
The girl who believed she had to earn love.
The new dress represented the girl she was becoming.
The girl who knew she deserved respect.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
But something made her answer.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Is this Aaliyah?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Linda. I used to work with your father.””
Aaliyah frowned.
“Okay…”
“I’m calling because I think you need to know something.””
Her stomach tightened.
“What?””
There was a pause.
Then Linda said something that changed everything.
“Your father didn’t just come home early that day by accident.””
Aaliyah froze.
“What do you mean?””
“He had been worried about you for weeks.””
“Why?””
Linda sighed.
“Because he noticed things.””
Aaliyah sat down.
“What things?””
“The way Mia spoke to you. The way Rachel dismissed you. The way you stopped asking for help.””
Aaliyah felt tears forming.
“He knew?””
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
Because part of her wondered why he waited.
“Why didn’t he say anything?””
“Because your father wanted you to tell him when you were ready.””
Aaliyah looked away.
She remembered all the times she said she was fine.
All the times she smiled.
All the times she hid how lonely she felt.
Linda continued.
“Your father told me something once.””
“What?””
“He said, ‘My daughter thinks being strong means needing nobody. I’m trying to teach her that being loved is not the same as being weak.’”
Aaliyah covered her mouth.
Her father had been watching.
He had known.
He just didn’t want to take away her voice.
After the call ended, Aaliyah sat quietly.
Then she went downstairs.
David was in the kitchen.
“Dad?””
He looked up.
“Everything okay?””
She nodded slowly.
“I talked to Linda.””
His expression changed slightly.
“Oh.””
“You knew?””
David sighed.
“Knew what?””
“That things were bad.””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
Aaliyah’s eyes filled.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
David walked closer.
“Because every time I tried, you defended them.””
She looked away.
“That’s because I wanted everyone to get along.””
“I know.””
His voice softened.
“But sometimes keeping peace means you’re the only one sacrificing.””
Aaliyah hugged him.
And for a while, neither of them spoke.
But while they were rebuilding their relationship, Rachel was making plans of her own.
Because Rachel wasn’t ready to accept losing.
She had spent years creating the image of a perfect blended family.
And now everyone knew the truth wasn’t perfect.
She couldn’t allow that.
So she found someone who could help.
Someone with influence.
Someone who could change the story again.
Mia’s grandmother.
The woman who had always believed Mia could do no wrong.
And when Rachel showed her the online posts, she didn’t ask what happened.

She asked one question.
“How do we make David regret choosing Aaliyah?””
