Chapter 8: The Money That Changed Everything
The next morning, Aaliyah couldn’t stop thinking about what her father said.
Someone tried to access her trust.
Someone connected to the family.
Someone who knew about it.
The thought made her uncomfortable.
Because she didn’t want to believe anyone close to her would do something like that.
But she had learned a painful lesson.
People weren’t always who they appeared to be.
“Dad, who knew about the trust?””
David looked exhausted.
“Not many people.””
“Who?””
He sighed.
“Your mother’s lawyer. Me. And Rachel.””
Aaliyah went silent.
“Rachel knew?””
David nodded.
“She helped with paperwork after your mother passed.””
Aaliyah felt sick.
“So she could have…”
“I don’t want to accuse anyone without proof.””
“But you think it’s possible.””
David looked away.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
Because it meant the situation with Mia might not have started with jealousy alone.
There could have been something deeper.
Something more calculated.
Later that day, David met with his attorney.
Aaliyah stayed home, trying to distract herself.
She cleaned her room.
She organized old school papers.
She tried watching television.
Nothing worked.
Her mind kept returning to the same question.
Why?
Why would someone want something that belonged to her?
She never asked for special treatment.
She never wanted more than anyone else.
Then her phone rang.
Mia.
Aaliyah almost didn’t answer.
But she did.
“Hello?””
Mia sounded nervous.
“I need to tell you something.””
Aaliyah sat down.
“What?””
“I heard my mom talking.””
Aaliyah’s stomach tightened.
“About what?””
“About your trust.””
Silence.
Aaliyah closed her eyes.
“What did she say?””
Mia took a breath.
“She said she was tired of watching you get everything.””
Aaliyah frowned.
“I didn’t get everything.””
“I know.””
Mia’s voice cracked.
“That’s the point.””
Aaliyah listened.
“My mom always compared us.””
Aaliyah stayed quiet.
“She would say things like, ‘Your father only feels guilty because Aaliyah lost her mother.’”
Aaliyah felt her chest tighten.
“She said that?””
“Yes.””
Mia paused.
“And I believed it.””
There it was.
The truth beneath everything.
Mia’s jealousy wasn’t born overnight.
It was planted.
Fed.
Repeated.
Until she started believing Aaliyah was the enemy.
“I’m sorry,” Mia whispered.
Aaliyah looked down.
“Why are you telling me this?””
“Because I found something.””
“What?””
“My mom’s emails.””
Aaliyah sat up.
“What kind of emails?””
“About the trust.””
That evening, Mia sent screenshots.
Aaliyah stared at them.
The messages were between Rachel and someone she didn’t recognize.
The conversation was disturbing.
Rachel had asked questions about the trust.
About the amount.
About the process.
One message stood out.
*“If David doesn’t voluntarily use the money for the household, there are other ways to make him reconsider.””*
Aaliyah felt cold.
Other ways.
Those words scared her.
Because they suggested planning.
Not emotion.
Not anger.
Planning.
When David returned home, Aaliyah showed him everything.
He read silently.
His face became expressionless.
That scared her more than anger.
“Dad?””
He placed the phone down.
“I need to make a call.””
“Are you okay?””
He looked at her.
“No.””
It was the first time she heard him admit that.
“I’m not okay.””
She reached for his hand.
And for the first time, she realized something.
Her father wasn’t just fighting for her.
He was grieving too.
Grieving the family he thought he had built.
The next morning, Rachel arrived at the house.
She didn’t come angry.
She came confident.
That worried Aaliyah.
People who knew they were losing usually acted desperate.
Rachel looked like someone who believed she still had power.
David opened the door.
“What do you want?””
Rachel smiled.
“To talk.””
“About?””
She looked past him.
At Aaliyah.
“About your daughter.””
Aaliyah immediately felt defensive.
David stepped forward.
“No.””
Rachel looked surprised.
“No?””
“You don’t get to come here and attack her again.””
Rachel sighed.
“I’m not attacking.””
She reached into her bag.
“I’m offering proof.””
David frowned.
“Proof of what?””
Rachel pulled out documents.
And Aaliyah’s heart sank.
May you like
Because she recognized the signature.
Her own.
