Chapter 9: The Last Lie Before the Truth
Adrian Cole had spent his entire life believing that family meant safety.
It was the first lesson he learned as a child.
When his father walked away, his mother stayed.
When money was tight, Patricia found a way.
When the world became uncertain, Eleanor opened her home and gave him a place to belong.
Family was supposed to be the place where you lowered your guard.
But now Adrian understood something painful.
Sometimes the people closest to you were the ones who knew exactly where to hurt you.
He sat in the hospital hallway outside Clara Bennett’s room, staring at the floor.
The photograph from the unknown sender still haunted him.
Clara lying unconscious.
A warning.
A message.
A reminder that someone was willing to do anything to protect the Warren family secrets.
Marcus stood beside him, speaking quietly on the phone.
Adrian barely heard the conversation.
His mind was somewhere else.
Three weeks ago, he was planning a wedding.
Now he was sitting in a hospital because the woman who knew the truth about his fiancée had been attacked.
Everything had changed.
Everything except one thing.
He still needed answers.
The doctor finally stepped out.
“Mr. Cole?””
Adrian immediately stood.
“How is she?””
“She’s stable.””
He released a breath he didn’t realize he was holding.
“Can I see her?””
“Only briefly. She’s still weak.””
Adrian nodded.
When he entered the room, Clara looked smaller than he remembered.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
The confident woman who had sat across from him in the coffee shop was gone.
She looked exhausted.
Broken.
But alive.
Her eyes opened when she heard him.
“Adrian.””
He stepped closer.
“Don’t talk too much.””
A faint smile appeared.
“You sound like Elena.””
That surprised him.
“She worries about you.””
Clara looked away.
“She always worried about everyone.””
Adrian pulled a chair closer.
“Who did this?””
Clara became silent.
“Clara.””
She looked at him.
“You already know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I need to hear it.””
Her expression was painful.
“You don’t want to hear it.””
“Everyone keeps telling me that.””
“Because everyone knows what happens after the truth.””
Adrian leaned forward.
“What happens?””
“You lose the people you thought you knew.””
The words hit him.
Because he already had.
Eleanor.
Natalie.
Maybe even himself.
“What did you find three years ago?””
Clara closed her eyes.
“The money wasn’t the biggest secret.””
Adrian frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“The financial records were only the beginning.””
“What was the bigger secret?””
Clara looked toward the door.
As if checking whether someone was listening.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Richard Warren wasn’t stealing from the company.””
Adrian froze.
“Then what?””
“He was hiding what someone else was doing.””
The room became silent.
“Who?””
Clara looked at him.
“Natalie.””
Adrian felt the familiar pain return.
Even though he had suspected it.
Even though Eleanor had warned him.
Hearing it still hurt.
“What did she do?””
Clara swallowed.
“When Richard’s health started failing, Natalie began taking control.””
“She was young.””
“Yes.””
“And nobody questioned her?””
“They underestimated her.””
That sentence sounded familiar.
Everyone had underestimated Natalie.
Even him.
“She found ways to move money without directly connecting herself.””
“How?””
“Through people who trusted her.””
Adrian thought about the signatures.
The accounts.
The documents.
“She used her father.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Clara looked at him.
“Because Natalie believed the Warren family belonged to her.””
Adrian sat back.
“She wanted control.””
“Not just control.””
Clara’s voice became quiet.
“Respect.””
The answer surprised him.
“She spent her whole life being compared to her father.””
Adrian listened.
“Everyone called Richard a genius. A businessman. A visionary.””
“And Natalie?””
“His daughter.””
Clara looked down.
“She hated that.””
Adrian remembered all the times Natalie talked about proving herself.
All the times she mentioned being underestimated.
He had always thought it was ambition.
Maybe it was something darker.
“She didn’t want to inherit his empire.””
Clara looked at him.
“She wanted to surpass him.””
A silence followed.
Then Adrian asked:
“What about Elena?””
Clara’s expression softened.
“Elena tried to help me.””
“She knew?””
“She knew enough.””
“Why stay?””
“Because Natalie made sure leaving wasn’t easy.””
Adrian’s anger grew.
“How?””
Clara hesitated.
“She helped Elena financially after her mother became sick.””
“That sounds kind.””
“It wasn’t.””
Adrian understood.
It was control disguised as kindness.
“Natalie created a situation where Elena needed her.””
Clara nodded.
“Exactly.””
Adrian looked away.
He thought about his mother.
Patricia never helped people so they would owe her.
She helped because she believed people mattered.
Natalie’s version of kindness had conditions.
“What happened the night you left?””
Clara closed her eyes.
“Natalie confronted me.””
“What did she say?””
“She offered me money.””
Adrian frowned.
“To stay quiet?””
“Yes.””
“And you refused.””
“I did.””
“Why?””
Clara looked at him.
“Because I realized something.””
“What?””
“She wasn’t afraid of losing money.””
A pause.
“She was afraid of losing control.””
Adrian understood.
That was Natalie’s greatest fear.
Not being exposed.
Not losing wealth.
Losing power.
Before Adrian could ask more, the door opened.
Marcus stepped inside.
His expression was serious.
“We have a problem.””
Adrian turned.
“What?””
“Natalie knows Clara survived.””
Clara’s face changed.
“How?””
Marcus looked at her.
“She visited the hospital.””
Adrian stood.
“What?””
“She came twenty minutes ago.””
The room felt colder.
“Natalie came here?””
Marcus nodded.
“She didn’t come alone.””
“Who was with her?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Eleanor.””
Adrian froze.
His grandmother.
The two women connected to every secret.
Together.
“Where are they now?””
“They left.””
Adrian looked at Clara.
Fear crossed her face.
“She’s going to finish this.””
Adrian immediately turned.
“No.””
Clara grabbed his hand.
“You don’t understand.””
“I do.””
“No.””
Her voice became urgent.
“You still think Natalie is someone who can be reasoned with.””
Adrian stopped.
“She isn’t.””
The words hurt because they sounded true.
“She believes she’s protecting herself.””
“And what happens to people in her way?””
Clara didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Adrian left the hospital immediately.
He drove to the Warren estate.
But this time, he didn’t enter quietly.
He walked through the front doors with purpose.
Natalie was waiting in the living room.
Almost like she expected him.
“You went to see Clara.””
Adrian stopped.
No denial.
No surprise.
Just confirmation.
“How did you know?””
Natalie smiled sadly.
“Because I know you.””
“Do you?””
The question hurt her.
He saw it.
But only briefly.
“You think I’m the villain.””
“I think you’ve lied to me.””
She looked away.
“Adrian…”
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“I’m done hearing explanations without answers.””
Natalie stared at him.
“What do you want to know?””
Everything.
The word almost came out.
Instead:
“The truth.””
For the first time, Natalie looked tired.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Tired.
“You really want it?””
“Yes.””
She walked toward the window.
“When I was a child, everyone thought I had everything.””
Adrian listened.
“Money. A beautiful home. A powerful family.””
She laughed quietly.
“But nobody saw what happened inside this house.””
“What happened?””
“My father controlled everything.””
Adrian said nothing.
“He controlled the company. The employees. The family.””
“Richard?””
“Yes.””
She turned around.
“He never trusted me.””
“Then why did you help him?””
Her expression changed.
“I didn’t.””
The answer surprised him.
“What?””
“I spent years trying to stop him.””
Adrian stared.
“But Clara said—”
“I know what Clara said.””
Natalie interrupted.
“And she’s not completely wrong.””
That was the first honest thing she had said.
Adrian felt it.
“You moved the money.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I was trying to save the company.””
He shook his head.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I expect you to listen.””
Her voice cracked slightly.
“After my father died, I discovered how much damage he had caused.””
Adrian remained silent.
“The company was collapsing.””
“So you hid it.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because if the world knew, thousands of people would lose their jobs.””
There was something in her voice.
Something real.
But Adrian didn’t know whether it was truth or another performance.
“You used people.””
Natalie looked down.
“Yes.””
The admission shocked him.
“I made choices I regret.””
“Like Elena?””
Her face changed.
A flash of shame.
“Yes.””
That answer was unexpected.
“I was wrong.””
Adrian stared at her.
For the first time, Natalie wasn’t trying to win.
She was admitting fault.
But then she said something that changed everything.
“I wasn’t the only one.””
Adrian narrowed his eyes.
“What does that mean?””
Natalie looked toward the hallway.
“Ask Eleanor.””
His heart sank.
“What about her?””
Natalie smiled sadly.
“She told you I was dangerous.””
“Yes.””
“She didn’t tell you why.””
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Natalie looked at him.
“The person who destroyed this family wasn’t me.””
A pause.
“It was the person everyone trusted most.””
Adrian felt cold.
“Eleanor?””
Natalie didn’t answer.
And somehow, that silence was worse.
Before Adrian could respond, his phone rang.
Marcus.
He answered.
“What?””
Marcus’s voice was urgent.
“Adrian, you need to come to the office.””
“Why?””
“We found the original records.””
“What records?””
“The ones that prove who actually moved the money.””
Adrian looked at Natalie.
“What did you find?””
A pause.
Then Marcus said:
“The signatures were forged.””
Adrian froze.
“Whose?””
“Everyone’s.””
The room went silent.
“Natalie’s. Richard’s. Eleanor’s.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“Then whose signature was real?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“The person who created the accounts.””
Adrian waited.
Then Marcus said:
“Someone nobody suspected.””
The call ended.
Adrian looked at Natalie.
She looked back at him.
For the first time, they both understood.
They had been looking in the wrong direction.
All this time.
Someone else had been controlling the game.
May you like
Someone who had convinced everyone to blame each other.
And the final secret of the Warren family was about to be revealed.
