Chapter 6: The Dinner Where Everything Began to Fall Apart

Adrian Cole had attended hundreds of important dinners in his life.

Business negotiations.

Charity events.

Family celebrations.

Political gatherings.

He knew how to sit at a table, smile at the right moments, and say exactly what people expected him to say.

But never had he entered a dinner knowing the person across from him might be hiding a life-changing secret.

The private dining room Natalie chose was one of the most exclusive restaurants in Cedar Hollow.

A place where wealthy families celebrated engagements, anniversaries, and important victories.

The kind of place where everyone knew everyone.

The kind of place where reputations mattered.

Natalie loved places like this.

She loved environments where appearances were everything.

Adrian sat across from her, watching candlelight reflect in her eyes.

She looked beautiful.

There was no denying that.

That was part of what made everything so difficult.

If Natalie had always been cruel, if she had always been cold, leaving would have been easy.

But she wasn’t.

There were moments when she was caring.

Moments when she made him laugh.

Moments when she seemed like the person he fell in love with.

And Adrian hated that those memories still mattered.

Because now he had to separate the woman he loved from the woman he was discovering.

Natalie lifted her wine glass.

“To us.””

Adrian looked at his own glass.

“To us.””

They touched glasses.

But Adrian barely tasted the wine.

Natalie noticed.

“You’re somewhere else tonight.””

“I’m just tired.””

She smiled slightly.

“You keep saying that.””

A pause.

“Are you sure everything is okay?””

Adrian looked at her.

There it was again.

The question.

The opportunity.

He could tell her.

He could place the evidence on the table.

He could ask about the document.

He could demand answers.

But he didn’t.

Not yet.

“I’m okay.””

Natalie held his gaze.

For several seconds.

Long enough that Adrian wondered if she was testing him.

Then she smiled.

“Good.””

She reached across the table and touched his hand.

“I’ve been feeling like we haven’t been ourselves lately.””

Adrian stayed quiet.

“What do you mean?””

“I mean…”

She looked down.

“Maybe wedding stress is affecting us.””

Wedding stress.

That was a convenient explanation.

Adrian wondered how many things Natalie had explained away with simple words.

Stress.

Misunderstanding.

Bad timing.

He had spent years accepting those explanations.

Not anymore.

“I think we’ll be fine,” he said.

Natalie smiled.

“I know we will.””

But then her expression changed slightly.

Almost too quickly to notice.

“What did you do today?””

The question sounded casual.

But Adrian heard something underneath it.

Why?

Why did she need to know?

“I worked.””

“All day?””

“Yes.””

“Anyone interesting come by?””

His fingers tightened slightly around the glass.

There it was.

The real question.

Not what did you do?

Who did you see?

Adrian looked at her.

“No.””

Natalie smiled.

A little too quickly.

“Good.””

The word bothered him.

Good.

Not “I’m glad.””

Not “I hope work wasn’t stressful.””

Good.

Like she was relieved.

After dinner, Natalie suggested they walk through the city.

Normally, Adrian would have loved it.

They used to walk for hours.

Talking about everything.

Their dreams.

Their future.

Their family.

But tonight, every conversation felt like a game.

Every silence felt suspicious.

They passed a jewelry store.

Natalie stopped.

“Look.””

She pointed toward the window.

A necklace displayed under soft lighting.

“It’s beautiful.””

Adrian smiled.

“You want it?””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“I just like imagining our future.””

“Our future?””

She nodded.

“Someday, we’ll have children.””

The word hurt more than he expected.

Because three weeks ago, he imagined that future clearly.

Now he wasn’t sure it existed.

Natalie leaned against him.

“Adrian?””

“Yes?””

“Do you love me?””

The question came suddenly.

He looked at her.

A woman asking for reassurance.

A woman who might be afraid.

For a moment, he saw the Natalie he knew.

Not the person from the kitchen.

Not the person from Clara’s story.

Just Natalie.

The woman he once loved.

And that made the answer harder.

“I care about you.””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“That’s not what I asked.””

Adrian looked away.

Because he couldn’t say the words anymore.

Not honestly.

Natalie noticed.

And for the first time, he saw something in her eyes.

Not anger.

Fear.

Real fear.

She quickly hid it.

“I think we should go home.””

The drive back was silent.

When they arrived at the estate, Natalie went upstairs immediately.

Adrian stayed downstairs.

He needed air.

He needed space.

He walked into the garden.

That was where he found Elena.

She was sitting alone on a bench.

Surprised, she stood.

“Mr. Cole.””

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to disturb you.””

“You didn’t.””

There was sadness in her voice.

Adrian looked at her.

“You knew Clara.””

Elena froze.

The reaction was immediate.

She looked around.

“Who told you?””

“Does it matter?””

“Yes.””

Her voice became serious.

“It matters.””

Adrian sat down.

“Elena, I met her.””

The color disappeared from Elena’s face.

“She’s alive?””

“Yes.””

For a moment, Elena closed her eyes.

And Adrian saw something unexpected.

Relief.

“She’s alive.””

The words came out like a prayer.

“You thought she wasn’t?””

Elena looked down.

“I didn’t know.””

“Tell me what happened.””

She was silent.

“Please.””

Elena sat slowly.

“Clara was kind.””

Adrian listened.

“She was the first person at the Warren company who treated me like I was more than an employee.””

“What happened?””

“She discovered something.””

“The financial records.””

Elena looked at him.

“You know.””

“Yes.””

She sighed.

“She asked me for help.””

“Why you?””

“Because I knew things.””

“What things?””

Elena looked toward the house.

“This family is complicated.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“It’s a warning.””

Adrian remained silent.

“Elena, I need the truth.””

She smiled sadly.

“Everyone says that.””

“Everyone?””

“People always say they want the truth.””

Her eyes moved toward the mansion.

“But when they learn the truth, they usually wish they never asked.””

Adrian thought about Natalie.

About the wedding.

About everything he had believed.

“I can handle it.””

Elena studied him.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Finally, she whispered:

“Natalie knew about the accounts.””

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

“Why?””

“Because Richard trusted her.””

“Trusted her with illegal activity?””

Elena looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know everything.””

“But you know enough.””

She nodded.

“I know that Clara was trying to expose something.””

“And Natalie stopped her.””

Elena didn’t answer.

But silence was an answer.

“What happened the night Clara disappeared?””

Elena looked at him.

Her eyes filled with fear.

“That night changed everything.””

“What happened?””

“I found Clara outside the estate.””

“When?””

“Late.””

“Doing what?””

“She was leaving.””

“Leaving?””

“She had documents.””

Adrian leaned forward.

“What documents?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“She didn’t show me everything.””

“Why?””

“Because she said if anything happened to her, I needed to stay safe.””

Adrian’s heart sank.

“What did you say?””

“I told her to leave.””

“And she did?””

“Yes.””

Elena looked away.

“But before she left, Natalie arrived.””

The air seemed to disappear.

“Natalie was there?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Elena’s hands began trembling.

“She argued with Clara.””

“About what?””

“The documents.””

Adrian’s voice became quieter.

“Then?””

“Then Clara left.””

“And?””

Elena looked at him.

“And the next day, everyone said she resigned.””

Adrian felt anger rising.

“Did Natalie threaten her?””

“I don’t know.””

“You saw them.””

“I heard them.””

“What did you hear?””

Elena swallowed.

“Natalie said…”

She stopped.

“What?””

“She said Clara didn’t understand who she was fighting against.””

Adrian looked toward the house.

A beautiful mansion.

A beautiful family.

A beautiful lie.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Elena laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“Who would believe me?””

“Me.””

She looked at him.

“Would you have believed me three weeks ago?””

Adrian couldn’t answer.

Because she was right.

Three weeks ago, he would have defended Natalie.

He would have found another explanation.

He would have convinced himself there had to be a misunderstanding.

That realization hurt.

Elena stood.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For bringing this into your life.””

Adrian shook his head.

“You didn’t.””

But before he could say more, Elena’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her expression changed.

Fear.

“What is it?””

She didn’t answer.

The phone rang again.

Adrian saw the name.

*Natalie.*

Elena looked at him.

“She knows.””

“Knows what?””

“That I talked to you.””

A chill moved through him.

“How?””

Elena didn’t respond.

She answered.

“Hello?””

There was silence.

Then Natalie’s voice came through the speaker.

Even from a distance, Adrian could hear the coldness.

“Elena.””

A pause.

“Come inside.””

Elena looked terrified.

Natalie continued.

“Now.””

The call ended.

Adrian stood.

“I’ll come with you.””

“No.””

Elena shook her head.

“You can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because if Natalie thinks you know…”

She stopped.

Adrian finished the sentence.

“She’ll do what?””

Elena looked at him.

And the answer was written all over her face.

Adrian watched Elena walk back toward the house.

Alone.

And for the first time, he realized something terrifying.

Natalie wasn’t just hiding the truth.

She was controlling everyone who knew it.

Including Elena.

Including Clara.

And maybe…

including him.

As Adrian stood in the darkness outside the Warren estate, his phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*You should have walked away when you had the chance.*

Adrian stared at the screen.

Then slowly looked toward the house.

The place where he was supposed to begin his marriage.

The place where he had discovered the truth.

And he finally understood.

May you like

The wedding was no longer about love.

It was about survival.
