Chapter 3: The Warning That Changed Everything
Adrian Cole stared at the unknown message on his phone for nearly a minute.
*Stop asking questions about the Warren family.*
Five simple words.
But they carried a weight that made the room feel colder.
He had received threats before.
Running a successful company meant dealing with competition, angry clients, and people who didn’t always appreciate losing.
But this was different.
This wasn’t a business rival.
This wasn’t someone trying to negotiate a contract.
This was personal.
Someone knew he was asking questions.
Someone was watching.
Adrian looked back at his call history.
Elena’s name was still there.
The call had lasted less than a minute.
He wanted to call her back immediately.
He wanted answers.
But something stopped him.
Instinct.
A feeling he had learned to trust over years of making difficult decisions.
If someone was trying to scare Elena into silence, calling her again might put her in more danger.
So instead, he sat there in silence.
Thinking.
The wedding was three weeks away.
Three weeks.
His entire future had been planned around a woman whose life seemed increasingly full of hidden doors.
And every door he opened revealed something darker.
The next morning, Adrian arrived at the Warren estate before Natalie woke up.
He parked away from the main entrance and walked toward the garden.
He needed to speak with Eleanor.
Not Natalie.
Not yet.
His grandmother was the only person in that house he trusted completely.
He found her sitting outside with a blanket over her knees, reading a newspaper.
“Early visit,” Eleanor said without looking up.
“You expected me?””
She smiled.
“I’m eighty years old, Adrian. I may move slowly, but I’m not blind.””
He sat beside her.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
The garden was peaceful.
Birds moved between the trees.
The morning air was fresh.
It was hard to believe something dangerous could exist inside such a beautiful place.
“Grandmother,” Adrian finally said.
Eleanor folded the newspaper.
“What happened?””
The question surprised him.
“You already know something happened?””
“I know you.””
She looked at him.
“When you were a child, you made the same face whenever you discovered something you didn’t understand.””
Adrian almost smiled.
Almost.
Then he pulled out his phone.
He showed her the message.
Eleanor’s expression changed.
Not dramatically.
But enough.
Enough for Adrian to notice.
“You know what this means.””
It wasn’t a question.
Eleanor looked away.
“Adrian…”
“Who sent this?””
She was silent.
“Grandmother.””
She closed her eyes.
“I was hoping you would never have to see this side of the family.””
That sentence made his chest tighten.
“The side of the family?””
Eleanor sighed.
“There are things about the Warrens that people outside this house never see.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked at him carefully.
“Why?””
The question caught him off guard.
“Because I’m marrying Natalie.””
“No.””
Eleanor shook her head.
“Not because you’re marrying Natalie.””
She looked toward the house.
“Because you’re beginning to understand who Natalie is.””
Adrian remained quiet.
Eleanor continued.
“When you first met her, you saw what everyone sees.””
“And what is that?””
“A beautiful woman from a powerful family. Someone confident. Someone successful.””
Her voice lowered.
“But power changes people.””
Adrian looked down.
“What happened to the person who complained?””
Eleanor didn’t answer immediately.
That silence told him everything.
“You know.””
“Yes.””
“Who was it?””
“A woman named Clara.””
The name meant nothing to Adrian.
“Who was Clara?””
“An assistant who worked for Natalie’s father.””
Eleanor’s fingers tightened around the blanket.
“She was young. Twenty-four. Smart.
Ambitious. She noticed things she shouldn’t have noticed.””
“What things?””
“Financial problems.””
Adrian frowned.
“What kind of financial problems?””
Eleanor looked uncomfortable.
“Problems that powerful people prefer to hide.””
A cold feeling moved through Adrian.
“You’re saying Natalie’s family was involved in something illegal?””
“I’m saying you should be careful with assumptions.””
Eleanor’s response was careful.
Too careful.
“But?””
She looked at him.
“But Clara disappeared from the Warren organization shortly after.””
“Disappeared?””
“She resigned.””
“Did she?””
Eleanor didn’t answer.
Adrian understood.
The official story was not necessarily the truth.
Before he could ask more, they heard footsteps behind them.
Natalie.
She was standing near the garden entrance.
Wearing a white dress.
Smiling.
But Adrian noticed something.
Her smile didn’t reach her eyes.
“Am I interrupting something?””
Eleanor immediately looked away.
“No.””
Natalie walked closer.
“Good.””
She placed her hand on Adrian’s shoulder.
“I was looking everywhere for you.””
Adrian forced himself to smile.
“I wanted to check on Eleanor.””
“How sweet.””
Natalie kissed his cheek.
But Adrian felt nothing.
Not warmth.
Not comfort.
Only uncertainty.
Later that morning, Natalie insisted they attend a wedding appointment together.
Adrian agreed.
He needed to continue acting normal.
That was the hardest part.
Pretending.
For years, Natalie had been the person he trusted most.
Now every conversation felt like a carefully planned performance.
At the designer’s studio, Natalie became the woman everyone loved.
She laughed.
She complimented employees.
She thanked everyone.
The designer smiled.
“You two are such a beautiful couple.””
Adrian looked at Natalie.
The woman beside him smiled perfectly.
“Thank you.””
The designer left.
The moment the door closed, Natalie’s expression changed.
“Did you like the final arrangement?””
Adrian looked at the dress sketches.
“Yes.””
“You don’t sound excited.””
“I’m tired.””
Natalie studied him.
“You’ve said that a lot recently.””
He looked at her.
“What are you trying to say?””
She smiled.
“I’m not trying to say anything.””
A pause.
“I just feel like something has changed.””
Adrian remained silent.
Natalie moved closer.
“Are you having doubts?””
The question was direct.
Too direct.
For a second, Adrian almost asked her everything.
About Elena.
About the message.
About Clara.
About what he had seen.
But he stopped.
Because he needed the truth.
And people rarely reveal themselves when confronted.
They reveal themselves when they feel safe.
“No,” he said.
Natalie smiled.
“Good.””
Then she turned back to the wedding plans.
But Adrian noticed something.
Her shoulders relaxed.
Like she had been afraid of a different answer.
That night, Adrian made a call.
A private investigator.
Someone he trusted.
Someone who worked discreetly.
“I need information about the Warren family,” Adrian said.
The investigator paused.
“That’s a complicated request.””
“I know.””
“Are you sure?””
Adrian looked at the wedding invitation sitting on his desk.
His name.
Natalie’s name.
Together.
“I need everything.””
The investigation began immediately.
For the next several days, Adrian watched and waited.
And the waiting became harder.
Because Natalie became more affectionate than ever.
Almost too affectionate.
She planned romantic dinners.
She sent him messages throughout the day.
She talked about their future.
Their house.
Their children.
Their life together.
Anyone watching from outside would have believed they were deeply in love.
And maybe that was what made it hurt.
Because Adrian still remembered the woman he thought Natalie was.
Sometimes he caught glimpses of her old self.
The woman who made him laugh.
The woman who held his hand during difficult moments.
The woman he believed understood him.
And those moments confused him.
Because people were complicated.
Nobody was entirely good or entirely bad.
But Adrian had learned something.
A person could have beautiful moments and still make ugly choices.
One evening, he returned home unexpectedly.
He found Natalie in the study.
She didn’t notice him immediately.
She was speaking on the phone.
Her voice was low.
“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.””
Adrian stopped.
Who was she talking to?
“No, I don’t care what she said.””
A pause.
Then Natalie’s voice became colder.
“She should have kept quiet.””
Adrian felt his heart drop.
He stayed still.
Listening.
“You know what happens when people threaten this family.””
Another pause.
Then:
“Handle it.””
The call ended.
Adrian stepped back before she could see him.
His mind was racing.
Who was she talking about?
Elena?
Clara?
Someone else?
A few minutes later, Natalie walked out of the study.
She saw Adrian standing in the hallway.
Her expression changed for only a fraction of a second.
But he saw it.
Surprise.
Fear.
Then it disappeared.
“There you are.””
Adrian smiled.
A fake smile.
“I was looking for you.””
She walked toward him.
“Everything okay?””
He looked at the woman he planned to marry.
The woman he once believed he knew better than anyone.
“Yes,” he said.
“Everything is fine.””
But inside, Adrian knew something had changed permanently.
Because now he wasn’t just searching for answers.
He was protecting himself.
And the next discovery would reveal that Natalie’s secrets were not only about cruelty.
They were about control.
The following morning, Adrian received a package at his office.
No return address.
No name.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Elena.
Standing outside the Warren estate.
On the back, someone had written:
*Ask her what happened three years ago.*
Adrian stared at the picture.
Three years ago.
The same time Clara disappeared.
The same time something changed inside the Warren family.
And suddenly, Adrian realized the truth he had been avoiding.
Elena wasn’t just a witness.
She was connected to the secret.
May you like
And whatever happened three years earlier…
was the reason everyone was afraid.
