Chapter 2: The Secrets Hidden Behind Closed Doors
Adrian Cole had always considered himself a patient man.
In business, patience had made him successful.
He never rushed into decisions. He studied contracts carefully, listened before speaking, and understood that the first version of a story was rarely the complete truth.
But when it came to his personal life, patience became much harder.
Every morning after discovering Natalie’s cruelty toward Elena, Adrian woke up with the same uncomfortable feeling sitting in his chest.
Doubt.
Not the kind of doubt that came from fear.
The kind that came from finally seeing something that had been there all along.
He started noticing things he had ignored before.
The little moments.
The expressions.
The conversations that suddenly felt different.
And the hardest part was realizing that maybe Natalie had never changed.
Maybe he was the one who had refused to see.
The next Saturday morning, Adrian arrived at the Warren estate earlier than usual.
Natalie was preparing for a wedding meeting with the event planner, and she had asked him to review some final decisions.
Normally, Adrian would have looked forward to these moments.
He used to love watching Natalie become excited about their future.
She would talk about flowers, decorations, music, and every small detail that would make their wedding unforgettable.
But now, he found himself studying her.
Not admiring her.
Studying her.
“Nervous?”” Natalie asked as she walked into the living room.
She smiled while adjusting the bracelet on her wrist.
“About what?””
She laughed softly.
“The wedding, Adrian. You’ve been quiet lately.””
For a second, he wondered if she knew.
If she had seen something in his expression.
If she realized he had been watching.
But Natalie simply sat beside him and leaned against his shoulder.
“We’re almost there,” she whispered.
“Three more weeks and everything changes.””
Everything changes.
Those words stayed in his mind.
Because Adrian wasn’t sure whether the change would be a beginning or an ending.
“I’m just tired from work,” he said.
It was a lie.
A small one.
But it was the first lie he had ever told Natalie.
And somehow, that bothered him more than he expected.
Natalie smiled.
“You work too hard.””
She kissed his cheek.
“I’ll have to remind my husband that life is supposed to be enjoyed.””
The word husband made his stomach tighten.
Because he suddenly wondered if he had been about to marry a stranger.
Later that afternoon, while Natalie was upstairs choosing between two wedding dresses for a photo appointment, Adrian walked through the house.
Not searching.
Not exactly.
At least, that was what he told himself.
But deep down, he wanted answers.
The estate was enormous.
The Warren family had owned the property for generations. Every hallway carried history. Old photographs covered the walls. Portraits of wealthy ancestors stared down from golden frames.
The house looked perfect.
But Adrian had learned something important.
Perfect appearances often hid imperfect truths.
He found Elena in the kitchen organizing groceries.
She immediately stood straighter when she saw him.
“Mr. Cole.””
Adrian smiled gently.
“Elena, you don’t have to look so nervous around me.””
She looked surprised.
“I’m sorry, sir.””
That response bothered him.
Not because she was disrespectful.
Because she sounded like someone who had learned to apologize automatically.
“For what?””
Elena lowered her eyes.
“I don’t know.””
Adrian was silent for a moment.
Then he said, “How long have you worked here?””
“Almost seven years.””
“Seven years is a long time.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you like working here?””
There was a pause.
A very small pause.
But Adrian noticed.
“I’m grateful for my job.””
That was not the answer to his question.
He studied her carefully.
“Grateful isn’t the same as happy.””
Elena looked uncomfortable.
“Mr. Cole, I don’t want to create problems.””
Those words confirmed what Adrian had already suspected.
She was afraid.
Not of losing an argument.
Of causing trouble.
“There won’t be any problems,” Adrian said.
But Elena didn’t look convinced.
Before he could ask anything else, Natalie’s voice came from the hallway.
“Adrian?””
Elena immediately returned to her work.
The change was instant.
Her shoulders lowered.
Her voice became quieter.
Natalie appeared with a smile.
“There you are.””
She looked between Adrian and Elena.
“What were you two talking about?””
“Nothing important,” Elena answered quickly.
Natalie smiled.
But Adrian noticed the way her eyes moved.
A quick glance.
A silent warning.
It lasted only a second.
Most people would have missed it.
Adrian didn’t.
After Elena left, Natalie walked closer.
“Is something wrong?””
“No.””
She tilted her head.
“You seem different lately.””
Adrian forced a smile.
“Different how?””
“I don’t know.””
She touched his arm.
“Distracted.””
He looked at her.
For years, he would have immediately reassured her.
Not anymore.
“I’ve just had a lot on my mind.””
Natalie accepted the answer.
But Adrian wondered if she was truly accepting it.
Or simply pretending.
That night, Adrian called his grandmother.
Eleanor answered after the second ring.
“Adrian.””
Her voice immediately softened.
“My favorite grandson.””
“You only have one grandson.””
“Exactly. That makes it easier.””
He laughed.
It was the first genuine laugh he had had in days.
Eleanor had always been his safe place.
After his father left, she had been the person who helped Patricia raise him.
She never replaced his mother.
Nobody could.
But she gave him stability when his world was falling apart.
“Are you coming by tomorrow?”” Eleanor asked.
“I can.””
“Good. Elena made that soup you like.””
Adrian smiled.
“Does she ever stop taking care of everyone?””
Eleanor became quiet.
“No.””
There was something in her voice.
Something Adrian noticed.
“What is it?””
Eleanor sighed.
“That girl has a heart bigger than this house.””
Adrian looked out the window.
“What do you mean?””
“She worries about everyone. Me. Her brother. Even people who don’t deserve her kindness.””
The last sentence caught his attention.
“People who don’t deserve it?””
Eleanor hesitated.
Then she changed the subject.
“How is the wedding planning?””
Adrian knew she was avoiding something.
But he didn’t push.
Not yet.
The next day, he visited Eleanor.
He found her sitting in the garden while Elena watered the flowers.
The scene looked peaceful.
Almost like a family.
Elena noticed Adrian approaching.
“Good morning.””
“Morning.””
Eleanor smiled.
“You’re early.””
“I wanted to see you.””
“Or you wanted Elena’s soup?””
Adrian laughed.
“Maybe both.””
They spent the morning together.
And for the first time in weeks, Adrian felt calm.
Until he noticed something.
Elena was limping slightly.
It was subtle.
Almost impossible to see.
But he noticed.
“Are you okay?””
Elena stopped.
“What?””
“Your leg.””
She immediately shook her head.
“It’s nothing.””
“Nothing?””
“I’m fine.””
Eleanor frowned.
“She says that about everything.””
Elena smiled awkwardly.
“Mrs. Warren…”
“No,” Eleanor interrupted.
“You work too hard.””
Elena looked away.
Adrian saw the exhaustion she tried to hide.
Later, when Elena left to prepare lunch, Eleanor looked at him seriously.
“Adrian.””
“Yes?””
“Be careful.””
The sudden seriousness surprised him.
“About what?””
Eleanor looked toward the house.
“About believing everything people show you.””
His heart sank.
“Grandmother, what are you saying?””
She sighed.
“I’m saying families have secrets.””
Before Adrian could respond, Natalie appeared behind them.
“Secrets?””
Both of them turned.
Natalie smiled.
“What secrets are we talking about?””
Eleanor’s expression changed immediately.
“Nothing important.””
Natalie looked at Adrian.
Again, that small moment.
That brief examination.
Like she was trying to understand what he knew.
That evening, Adrian made a decision.
He needed to know more.
Not because he wanted to punish Natalie.
Not because he wanted revenge.
Because before he married someone, he needed to know the truth.
He began looking deeper.
Quietly.
Carefully.
He reviewed old family records.
He spoke with people who had worked at the Warren estate before.
He searched for patterns.
And what he found surprised him.
Natalie’s reputation outside the house was almost flawless.
Everyone loved her.
Charity organizations praised her.
Friends described her as generous.
Neighbors called her elegant.
But behind closed doors, the stories were different.
A former employee mentioned that Natalie had a habit of making people feel small.
Another person said she treated service workers like they were invisible.
Someone else described an incident where Natalie had humiliated a young assistant during a family event.
But there was something strange.
Everyone who spoke about it seemed afraid to say too much.
As if they knew the Warren family had power.
Money.
Connections.
Adrian leaned back in his office chair, staring at the information in front of him.
He had spent years believing Natalie was misunderstood.
Now he wondered if everyone else had seen the truth before he did.
Then his phone rang.
It was Elena.
Adrian immediately answered.
“Hello?””
Her voice sounded nervous.
“Mr. Cole…”
“What happened?””
There was a pause.
“I need to tell you something.””
Adrian sat up.
“What is it?””
Another pause.
Longer this time.
Then Elena whispered:
“I think you should know why I never complained about Miss Natalie.””
Adrian felt a chill.
“Why?””
Elena’s voice became softer.
“Because the last person who complained…”
She stopped.
“Something happened to them.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What do you mean?””
But before Elena could answer, the call suddenly ended.
Adrian stared at the screen.
For several seconds, he didn’t move.
Then another message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*Stop asking questions about the Warren family.*
Adrian’s heart began beating faster.
Because now he understood.
This was no longer about a cruel comment in a kitchen.
No longer about a spilled glass of wine.
May you like
Something much bigger was hidden inside the Warren estate.
And someone was desperate to keep him from discovering it.
