Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Adrian Cole stared at the photograph sitting on his desk.

Elena Ruiz.

Standing outside the Warren estate.

The image was not threatening by itself.

She wasn’t doing anything suspicious.

She wasn’t meeting anyone.

She wasn’t holding documents or speaking to someone in secret.

She was simply standing there.

Yet the message written on the back made the photograph feel like evidence of something dangerous.

*Ask her what happened three years ago.*

Adrian read the words again.

Then again.

Three years ago.

The same period when Clara, the former Warren employee, had suddenly vanished from the family’s world.

The same period Eleanor had carefully avoided discussing.

The same period that seemed to connect every unanswered question.

He leaned back in his chair.

For the first time in his life, Adrian felt like he was standing in the middle of a story where everyone else knew the ending except him.

And the person who knew the most might be the quiet woman everyone ignored.

Elena.

His first instinct was to call her.

But he stopped himself.

Someone had already noticed his questions.

Someone had already tried to warn him.

If he approached Elena carelessly, he might put her at risk.

So instead, he did what he had always done when facing uncertainty.

He investigated.

The private investigator he hired, Marcus Hale, arrived at Adrian’s office that afternoon.

Marcus had been in the business for nearly twenty years. He was the kind of person who didn’t waste words.

He placed a folder on Adrian’s desk.

“I found some information.””

Adrian opened it.

“What kind?””

“Mostly public records. Employment history. Financial information. Nothing illegal.””

“But?””

Marcus looked at him.

“But there are gaps.””

Adrian frowned.

“What kind of gaps?””

“Three years ago, Elena Ruiz disappeared from every record connected to the Warren family.””

“That doesn’t make sense. She still works there.””

“Exactly.””

Marcus opened another document.

“According to official records, she resigned.””

Adrian stared at the page.

“She resigned?””

“February of that year.””

“But she’s been there the entire time.””

Marcus nodded.

“That’s the problem.””

Adrian felt a chill.

“Someone changed the records.””

“Possibly.””

“Who would have access?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

He didn’t need to.

Adrian already knew.

The Warren family.

“Keep going,” Adrian said.

Marcus flipped through another page.

“Before the resignation paperwork appeared, Elena was listed as a witness in an internal dispute involving Warren Holdings.””

“Clara?””

Marcus looked surprised.

“You already know about Clara?””

“Tell me.””

Marcus studied him for a moment before continuing.

“Clara Bennett was a financial assistant working directly under Richard Warren.””

Natalie’s father.

“She discovered irregularities in company accounts.””

“What kind of irregularities?””

“Money moved between several private accounts. Nothing officially proven. But enough to raise questions.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“And Elena was involved?””

“Not involved.””

Marcus tapped the paper.

“She was listed as someone who had access to information.””

“Because she worked at the house?””

“Yes.””

Adrian stood and walked toward the window.

The city outside continued moving.

People walking.

Cars passing.

A normal day.

But his life no longer felt normal.

“Why would a housekeeper know about company finances?””

Marcus shrugged.

“Because powerful families rarely separate business and personal life completely.””

That was true.

The Warren estate was not just a home.

It was the center of their world.

People who worked there saw everything.

Every argument.

Every secret.

Every mistake.

“Did Clara disappear because of this?”” Adrian asked.

Marcus remained quiet.

“That’s what you need to find out.””

Adrian turned around.

“What does that mean?””

“It means there is no official evidence that anything happened to her.””

“So she just left?””

“According to the records.””

Adrian hated that phrase.

According to the records.

It had become the favorite phrase of people hiding the truth.

“Find Clara,” Adrian said.

Marcus nodded.

“I’ll try.””

“No.””

Adrian looked directly at him.

“Find her.””

Marcus understood.

This was no longer a casual investigation.

Adrian needed answers.

That evening, Adrian went to the Warren estate.

But this time, he wasn’t looking for Natalie.

He found Elena in the laundry room.

She was folding towels.

The moment she saw him, she looked nervous.

“Mr. Cole.””

“Elena.””

She stopped.

“Is something wrong?””

Adrian closed the door behind him.

“I need to ask you about something.””

Her expression changed.

Instantly.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Fear.

That confirmed everything.

“You know what I’m going to ask.””

Elena looked down.

“I don’t think I should talk about this.””

“Why?””

She remained silent.

“Elena.””

Her hands tightened around the towel.

“Because people who talk about the Warren family usually regret it.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Who told you that?””

She laughed quietly.

But there was no humor.

“Nobody had to.””

The sadness in her voice affected him.

“How long have you been afraid?””

Elena looked away.

“I’m not afraid.””

“That’s not true.””

She looked at him.

For a moment, Adrian saw the exhaustion behind her eyes.

The years of carrying something heavy.

“You should leave this alone.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

Because I need to know if I’m marrying the wrong person.

The words almost came out.

But he stopped.

Instead, he said:

“Because someone is trying to intimidate me.””

Elena froze.

“What?””

Adrian showed her the message.

Her face lost color.

Then he showed her the photograph.

That was when she reacted.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You received this?””

“Yes.””

Elena stepped backward.

“Oh no.””

The words came out quietly.

Adrian noticed.

“You know who sent it.””

“No.””

But she said it too quickly.

“Elena.””

She closed her eyes.

“I don’t want anyone else getting hurt.””

“Who is getting hurt?””

She looked at him.

Then whispered:

“Everyone who gets too close.””

Before Adrian could respond, they heard footsteps outside.

Elena immediately changed.

The fear disappeared.

The careful expression returned.

Natalie entered the room.

“There you are.””

Her eyes moved between Adrian and Elena.

“What are you doing here?””

Adrian smiled.

“Talking.””

“About what?””

“Nothing important.””

Natalie looked at Elena.

The room became colder.

“Elena, could you give us a moment?””

“Yes, ma’am.””

Elena left quickly.

Adrian watched Natalie.

“You didn’t have to dismiss her.””

Natalie smiled.

“I was being polite.””

“Was that what that was?””

Her smile faded slightly.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian looked at her.

For a second, he almost said everything.

Almost.

But then he remembered the warning.

He remembered Elena’s fear.

He remembered the phone call.

Handle it.

“No meaning.””

Natalie studied him.

“You’ve changed.””

“I’ve been busy.””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“You’re looking at me differently.””

Adrian stayed silent.

Natalie’s voice softened.

“Adrian, if something is wrong, you can tell me.””

The irony almost made him laugh.

She was asking him for honesty while hiding the truth.

“I will.””

She smiled.

“Good.””

But after she left, Adrian knew something.

Natalie was scared.

Not because he suspected her.

Because she knew exactly what he might discover.

Later that night, Adrian searched through old news articles.

He found Clara Bennett’s name repeatedly mentioned.

Smart.

Reliable.

Promising.

Then suddenly nothing.

No updates.

No new job.

No public appearances.

It was as if she had vanished.

Then he found one article that made him stop.

A photograph.

Clara standing beside Elena.

The article was from three years ago.

The headline read:

*Warren Employee Raises Questions During Internal Review*

Adrian zoomed in.

The two women were standing outside the Warren headquarters.

Clara looked determined.

Elena looked nervous.

But they were together.

They knew each other.

They had trusted each other.

And then Adrian saw the date.

February 14.

Valentine’s Day.

The same day Elena’s employment records changed.

The same day Clara disappeared from public view.

His phone rang.

Marcus.

“Adrian.””

“What did you find?””

A pause.

Then Marcus said:

“I found Clara.””

Adrian stood immediately.

“Where?””

“She’s alive.””

His heart stopped for a second.

“Where is she?””

“She’s been living under a different name in another state.””

“Why?””

Marcus’s voice became serious.

“Because three years ago, someone tried to destroy her reputation.””

Adrian tightened his grip on the phone.

“Who?””

Another pause.

Then:

“I think you already know.””

Adrian looked toward the window.

Toward the distant lights of Cedar Hollow.

Toward the house where Natalie lived.

The woman he planned to marry.

“The Warrens?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

But silence was enough.

Then Marcus added:

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

“Clara agreed to meet you.””

“When?””

“Tomorrow.””

Adrian looked down at the wedding ring he had purchased for Natalie months ago.

A symbol of trust.

A symbol of forever.

But now it felt like a question.

Because tomorrow, he would meet the woman who disappeared three years ago.

The woman who might hold the truth about Natalie’s family.

May you like

And if Clara told him what really happened…

Adrian knew there might be no wedding at all.
