Chapter 6: The Detective Who Knew Too Much
Peter had spent the last three years believing he had lost his brother because of a tragic accident.
A weak heart.
A bad morning.
A life cut short.
But now he was standing inside Aaron's old house, holding a photograph that suggested the truth had been buried long before the funeral.
And the man standing beside him—the man who had guided every step of this investigation—was somehow connected to Aaron's final days.
Detective Marcus Hale looked at the photograph again.
His face was unreadable.
Too unreadable.
Peter noticed.
“You want to explain?””
Hale looked up.
“Not here.””
Peter almost laughed.
“Not here?””
His voice rose.
“My brother is dead. His children were locked away. A woman was hidden inside a wall. And now I find out you're in a picture with Aaron before he died.””
Hale stayed silent.
Peter stepped closer.
“I asked you who you are.””
“I told you.””
“No.””
Peter held up the photograph.
“You told me your job.””
The detective's eyes moved to the image.
“You didn't tell me why my brother knew you.””
Hale looked around the room.
The officers nearby watched carefully.
Finally, he spoke.
“Everyone leaves this room.””
Peter stared.
“What?””
“Everyone except us.””
The officers hesitated.
Hale gave a signal.
Slowly, they moved downstairs.
Emma stayed.
Hale looked at her.
“You too.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Emma—”
“No.””
Her voice was stronger than Peter expected.
“I spent three years trapped because people kept deciding what I was allowed to know.””
She looked directly at Hale.
“I’m not leaving.””
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Hale nodded.
“Fine.””
Peter crossed his arms.
“Start talking.””
Hale sat down.
For the first time since Peter met him, the detective looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like he had been carrying something heavy for years.
“My name wasn't always Marcus Hale.””
Peter frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Aaron knew me before I became a detective.””
Emma's expression changed.
Peter noticed.
“You were friends?””
Hale shook his head.
“No.””
“Then what?””
Hale looked at the photograph.
“I worked for him.””
Peter waited.
“As what?””
“Security.””
Peter frowned.
“Aaron needed security?””
“Not for himself.””
Hale looked toward the basement.
“For his family.””
Peter felt a chill.
“When?””
“Six months before he died.””
“Why?””
Hale hesitated.
“Because Aaron believed someone was watching him.””
Peter remembered Emma's words.
He found out Reena wasn't who she claimed to be.
“He knew about Reena.””
Hale nodded.
“Yes.””
Peter stepped closer.
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Aaron asked me not to.””
The answer made Peter angry.
“My brother asked you to keep secrets from me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Hale looked at him.
“Because he thought you were already in danger.””
Peter stopped.
“What?””
“Aaron believed anyone close to him could become a target.””
Emma crossed her arms.
“Then why did you let him die?””
The question hit harder than Peter expected.
Hale looked away.
“I didn't.””
Emma's eyes narrowed.
“You were supposed to meet him.””
Peter looked at Hale.
“What?””
Hale stayed quiet.
Peter's voice sharpened.
“Answer her.””
“Yes.””
“You were supposed to meet Aaron the morning he died?””
Hale nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he had proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Hale looked at the photograph.
“That Reena had been lying for years.””
Peter felt his anger rise.
“Then why didn't you protect him?””
Hale's jaw tightened.
“Because I was too late.””
The room became silent.
Peter studied him.
“You weren't there.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because someone followed me.””
Peter frowned.
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
Emma looked away.
Peter noticed.
“You know something.””
She didn't answer.
“Emma.””
Her voice was quiet.
“Reena knew about Marcus.””
Hale looked at her.
“How?””
Emma swallowed.
“Because she knew everything.””
Peter looked between them.
“You're both hiding things.””
Neither denied it.
That bothered him more.
“What was in the proof?””
Hale reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Peter stared.
“You had that?””
“Yes.””
“For three years?””
“Yes.””
Peter's face hardened.
“You've had evidence this whole time?””
“I had a piece of evidence.””
“And you did nothing?””
Hale's eyes flashed.
“You think I didn't try?””
Peter said nothing.
Hale opened the envelope.
Inside was a folded document.
A bank transfer.
Peter read the name.
RENA VOSS.
His eyes narrowed.
“Reena.””
The amount was large.
Very large.
“Where did this come from?””
Hale answered.
“An account connected to a company Aaron never knew existed.””
“What company?””
“Calder Holdings.””
Peter froze.
“What?””
“That company was created using Aaron's information.””
Peter looked at him.
“Someone stole his identity?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Years before he died.””
Peter looked at Emma.
“Reena?””
Emma nodded slowly.
“She was preparing.””
Peter looked back at the paper.
“What was she preparing for?””
Hale didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
“To take everything.””
Peter's hands tightened.
The house.
The money.
The children.
Aaron's entire life.
“She planned this.””
Hale nodded.
“But not alone.””
Peter looked up.
“What do you mean?””
“There was someone helping her.””
“Who?””
Hale's phone suddenly vibrated.
He checked it.
His face changed.
“What?””
He turned the screen away.
Peter noticed.
“Who was it?””
“No one.””
Peter laughed coldly.
“You really think I'm buying that?””
Hale put the phone away.
“It's not relevant.””
“Everything is relevant.””
Before Hale could answer, Emma spoke.
“It was him.””
Peter turned.
“Who?””
Emma looked at Hale.
“The person helping Reena.””
Hale's expression changed.
“What are you talking about?””
“You know.””
“No.””
“You introduced Aaron to him.””
Peter looked at Hale.
“Who?””
Emma's voice dropped.
“Your brother's attorney.””
Peter frowned.
“Aaron's attorney?””
“Yes.””
“Who was he?””
Emma looked toward the photograph.
“The same man who handled the trust.””
Peter felt a strange memory surface.
Aaron had mentioned someone.
Years ago.
A lawyer.
A person he trusted.
Peter had never met him.
“What was his name?””
Emma whispered:
“Thomas Voss.””
Peter froze.
“Voss?””
Emma nodded.
“Reena's father.””
The room went silent.
Peter felt sick.
“Aaron's attorney was Reena's father?””
“Yes.””
Hale looked down.
“He controlled the legal documents.””
Peter stared.
“And nobody saw a problem?””
Hale shook his head.
“Because he was respected.””
Peter looked at the basement.
Everything Aaron had built.
Everything he had protected.
Someone had been dismantling it piece by piece.
“So what happened to Thomas Voss?””
Emma answered.
“He disappeared.””
“When?””
“The day after Aaron died.””
Peter looked at Hale.
“And you didn't think that was suspicious?””
“I did.””
“Then why didn't you tell anyone?””
Hale's face hardened.
“Because I wasn't a detective then.””
Peter stared.
“What were you?””
Hale took a breath.
“A private investigator.””
The words settled.
Peter looked again at the photograph.
“So Aaron hired you.””
“Yes.””
“To investigate Reena.””
“Yes.””
“Then why was he still with her?””
Hale looked away.
“Because he was trying to save his children.””
Peter remembered Drew.
The basement.
The fear.
The way a six-year-old boy protected his sister.
Aaron had known.
He had seen the danger coming.
And he had failed to stop it.
Peter's phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
Peter answered.
“Hello?””
No one spoke.
Then a child's voice.
Small.
Afraid.
“Uncle Peter?””
Peter's heart stopped.
“Drew?””
“No.””
The voice trembled.
“I'm Ava.””
Peter went completely still.
The missing child.
Aaron's hidden daughter.
“Ava?””
“Yes.””
“Where are you?””
Silence.
Then:
“I don't know.””
Peter stood.
“Are you safe?””
“No.””
His chest tightened.
“Who are you with?””
The girl started crying.
“Someone who says he's my uncle.””
Peter looked at Hale.
Everyone saw the fear on his face.
“Who?””
Ava whispered:
“He says Daddy was a liar.””
Peter gripped the phone.
“Where is he taking you?””
The line crackled.
Then a man's voice came through.
“Peter Calder.””
Peter froze.
He knew that voice.
Not personally.
But recently.
From the phone.
From the investigation.
The man said:
“You've been looking for answers.””
Peter's voice turned cold.
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“The person your brother trusted more than anyone.””
Peter looked at Hale.
The detective went pale.
Because he recognized the voice.
The man continued:
“Aaron left you clues because he knew I would come back.””
Peter's grip tightened.
“Where is Ava?””
A quiet laugh.
“You're asking the wrong question.””
“What question should I ask?””
The man's voice became softer.
“Ask why Aaron hid his daughter from you.””
Peter said nothing.
The man continued:
“Ask why he never told you Lily wasn't his only secret.””
Peter felt a wave of anger.
“If you hurt that girl—”
“You think I'm the villain?””
The man laughed.
“Peter, your brother spent years lying to you.””
Peter looked at Emma.
Then Hale.
Then the photograph.
The man's voice dropped.
“You don't know Aaron.””
The call ended.
Peter lowered the phone.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Hale said:
“That was Thomas.””
Peter looked at him.
“You're sure?””
Hale nodded.
“Yes.””
Emma's face turned white.
“He has Ava.””
Peter looked toward the red door.
The hidden room.
The secrets.
The lies.
Then he looked at Detective Hale.
The man who had hidden the truth.
The man who had protected Aaron.
The man who might still know more.
“How many secrets did my brother leave behind?””
Hale didn't answer.
Because somewhere outside, an engine started.
A car pulled away from the street.
And on the floor near the front door, an officer found something left behind.
A small envelope.
With Peter's name written across it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Ava.
Standing beside Thomas Voss.
And behind them was Aaron.
May you like
Alive.
The date on the photograph was three days after his supposed death.
