Chapter 10: The Woman Who Controlled the Game
The name stayed in the air.
Evelyn.
Peter repeated it silently.
A name that meant nothing to him.
But everything to Aaron.
Because his brother had gone from fear to something much deeper.
Recognition.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Fear.
Real fear.
Peter had seen Aaron scared only once before.
When they were children.
Their father had been in the hospital, and the doctors had told them the situation was serious.
Aaron had been eleven.
Peter had been fourteen.
Aaron had grabbed Peter's hand and whispered, “Don't let them take him.””
That same look was in his eyes now.
Only worse.
“Who is Evelyn?”” Peter asked.
Aaron didn't answer.
The station around them had become chaos.
Officers stared at their phones.
People whispered.
The message had appeared on every device connected to the station network.
No one knew how.
No one knew who sent it.
But Aaron knew.
Peter stepped closer.
“Aaron.””
His brother looked at him.
“Not here.””
Peter almost laughed.
“Not here?””
He pointed around.
“You disappeared for three years. Your children are missing. You're accused of murder. And now someone named Evelyn is controlling everything.””
His voice cracked.
“I think here is exactly where you need to talk.””
Aaron looked away.
For a moment, Peter saw the same person from years ago.
His little brother.
The one who carried too much responsibility.
The one who always thought protecting people meant carrying every burden alone.
Finally, Aaron spoke.
“Evelyn Ward.””
Hale immediately reacted.
Peter noticed.
“You know her.””
Hale looked away.
Aaron saw it.
“Of course you do.””
Hale's expression hardened.
“Aaron.””
“No.””
Aaron's voice was cold.
“You don't get to say my name like you didn't destroy everything.””
Peter looked between them.
“Someone explain.””
Aaron took a breath.
“Evelyn was the person who taught Reena how to manipulate people.””
Peter frowned.
“What?””
“She wasn't Reena's friend.””
Aaron looked at him.
“She was her mentor.””
Peter felt a chill.
“Mentor?””
“Yes.””
“In what?””
Aaron hesitated.
“Control.””
The answer was unsettling.
Peter waited.
Aaron continued.
“Evelyn built an organization.””
Hale interrupted.
“Don't exaggerate.””
Aaron turned toward him.
“You know exactly what it was.””
Peter looked at Hale.
“Organization?””
Hale stayed silent.
Aaron continued.
“Evelyn found people who were vulnerable. People with money. Power. Influence.””
“And?””
“She learned how to get close to them.””
Peter's stomach tightened.
“Like Aaron?””
“Yes.””
Peter looked at Hale.
“And you?””
Hale didn't respond.
Aaron answered.
“He was one of her people.””
Hale stepped forward.
“That isn't true.””
Aaron laughed quietly.
“You still use the same words.””
“What words?””
“Not true.””
Aaron looked at Peter.
“She always trained people to deny first.””
Hale's face changed.
Peter saw it.
A tiny reaction.
But enough.
“Marcus.””
Hale looked at Peter.
“Listen to me.””
“No.””
Peter shook his head.
“I listened to you for days.””
His voice hardened.
“You told me you were helping me find the truth.””
“I was.””
“Then why did my brother say you betrayed him?””
Hale looked at Aaron.
“Aaron, tell him.””
Aaron said nothing.
That silence bothered Peter.
“What happened?””
Aaron looked down.
“Marcus was supposed to help me disappear.””
Peter frowned.
“Disappear?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Evelyn knew I was investigating her.””
Peter looked at Hale.
“And?””
Aaron continued.
“He agreed to help.””
Peter waited.
“But?””
Aaron's face tightened.
“He gave my location to Reena.””
Hale immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“You think I forgot?””
“I didn't.””
“You did.””
Aaron stepped closer.
“You told her where Emma was hiding.””
Emma, standing near the wall, went pale.
Peter looked at her.
“What?””
Aaron looked at Emma.
“She wasn't supposed to find you.””
Emma whispered:
“I knew.””
Peter turned.
“You knew?””
Emma nodded.
“That's why I was afraid of Marcus.””
Peter stared.
Everyone had known pieces.
Everyone except him.
Again.
Aaron looked at Peter.
“I wanted to tell you.””
Peter's expression hardened.
“When?””
Aaron didn't answer.
“That’s the problem.””
Peter looked away.
“Everyone always wanted to tell me.””
The words hurt because they were true.
They had all protected him by keeping him ignorant.
And somehow, that had only made everything worse.
A police officer rushed toward them.
“Detective Hale.””
Everyone turned.
The officer looked nervous.
“We found something.””
Hale frowned.
“What?””
The officer handed him a tablet.
“A security camera from the hospital.””
Peter stepped closer.
“What about it?””
The officer looked at Aaron.
“The person who took the children was recorded.””
Aaron immediately went still.
“Show me.””
The officer played the video.
The hospital hallway appeared.
A nurse walked past.
Then another person entered.
A woman.
Dark hair.
Calm.
Confident.
Peter stared.
He didn't recognize her.
But Aaron did.
His face drained of color.
“Evelyn.””
The woman moved through the hospital like she belonged there.
No panic.
No hiding.
She entered Drew and Lily's room.
Minutes later, the children followed her willingly.
Peter frowned.
“They know her.””
Aaron nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Aaron looked devastated.
“Because she made them trust her.””
Peter's fists tightened.
“What did she tell them?””
The video continued.
The audio was poor.
But one sentence could be heard.
The woman leaned toward Drew.
“Your father wants you back.””
Peter froze.
Aaron closed his eyes.
“She used me.””
Peter looked at him.
“What?””
“She used my name.””
The video ended.
The officer continued.
“We traced the vehicle.””
“Where?””
“A private airfield.””
Peter looked at Aaron.
“She’s leaving.””
Aaron shook his head.
“No.””
“No?””
“She wants us to follow.””
Peter frowned.
“Why?””
Aaron looked at the message on the phones.
ONCE AGAIN, AARON CHOSE THE WRONG FAMILY.
“She wants me to come.””
Peter stared.
“Then we go.””
Aaron immediately said:
“No.””
Peter looked at him.
“You're saying no?””
“Yes.””
“Your children are there.””
Aaron's face broke.
“I know.””
“Then what?””
Aaron looked at him.
“I don't want her to get what she wants.””
Peter stepped closer.
“What does she want?””
Aaron was silent.
Then:
“Me.””
The answer was quiet.
Simple.
Terrifying.
Peter understood.
“This was never about money.””
Aaron shook his head.
“No.””
“It was about controlling you.””
“Yes.””
Peter looked toward Hale.
“And Reena?””
Aaron's expression darkened.
“Reena was only the beginning.””
Emma spoke softly.
“What about Ava?””
Aaron closed his eyes.
“She was the reason everything started.””
Peter turned.
“Why?””
Aaron looked at him.
“Because Evelyn wanted her.””
Peter felt sick.
“Why?””
Aaron's voice dropped.
“Because Ava was the only person who knew the truth.””
“What truth?””
Aaron looked at Peter.
“The truth about Evelyn.””
Peter waited.
Aaron continued:
“Ava saw what happened the night I disappeared.””
Peter's heart stopped.
“What happened that night?””
Aaron looked around.
Then at Hale.
“Marcus knows.””
Everyone turned.
Hale's face changed.
“No.””
Aaron stepped toward him.
“You were there.””
“I wasn't.””
“You were.””
Peter looked at Hale.
“What happened?””
Hale didn't answer.
Aaron's voice became colder.
“Three years ago, Evelyn arranged my death.””
Peter froze.
“Arranged?””
“Yes.””
“She tried to kill you?””
Aaron nodded.
“And Marcus helped.””
Hale looked furious.
“That's a lie.””
Aaron stared at him.
“Then tell him where you were that night.””
Silence.
Peter looked at Hale.
“Where were you?””
Hale looked away.
That was the answer.
Peter felt betrayed.
Again.
The room became tense.
Then a sound came from the entrance.
A woman speaking.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
“Still blaming everyone else, Aaron?””
Every person turned.
A woman stood at the doorway.
Elegant.
Confident.
Not hiding.
Not afraid.
Peter immediately recognized her.
The woman from the video.
Evelyn Ward.
Two officers raised their weapons.
She didn't react.
Instead, she looked directly at Aaron.
“You look older.””
Aaron's face became cold.
“You look exactly the same.””
Evelyn smiled.
“That's because I didn't spend three years running.””
Peter stepped forward.
“Where are the children?””
Evelyn looked at him.
Then smiled.
“You must be Peter.””
Peter froze.
“How do you know me?””
“Aaron talked about you constantly.””
Peter's anger rose.
“Where are they?””
Evelyn tilted her head.
“Safe.””
“Where?””
She ignored the question.
“You still believe Aaron is the hero.””
Peter said nothing.
Evelyn looked at him.
“That’s adorable.””
Aaron stepped between them.
“Leave him out of this.””
Evelyn smiled.
“Still protecting your brother.””
She looked at Peter.
“That's always been his weakness.””
Peter stared.
“What do you want?””
Evelyn looked at Aaron.
“The same thing I wanted three years ago.””
Aaron's expression hardened.
“What?””
She smiled.
“To see if you would finally choose the truth over your family.””
Peter frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn turned toward him.
“Your brother has been lying to you.””
Aaron went still.
Peter looked at him.
“About what?””
Evelyn reached into her coat.
She pulled out a photograph.
She handed it to Peter.
His blood froze.
It showed Aaron.
Three years ago.
Standing beside Reena.
Holding something.
A document.
And on the back, written in black ink:
AARON AGREED.
Peter looked up.
“What did he agree to?””
Evelyn smiled.
“Ask your brother why he abandoned his own children.””
Aaron's face changed.
Peter turned toward him.
“Aaron?””
His brother looked at the photograph.
And for the first time...
Peter saw guilt.
Not fear.
Not confusion.
Guilt.
Aaron whispered:
“She’s right.””
Peter's heart dropped.
“What?””
Aaron looked at him.
“I made a deal.””
The room went silent.
“With Evelyn.””
Peter stared.
“Why?””
Aaron looked toward the floor.
“Because three years ago…”
His voice broke.
“I chose which person in my family would disappear.””
Peter couldn't move.
Aaron looked up.
“And I chose myself.””
The silence that followed felt endless.
Then Evelyn smiled.
“Now you understand.””
Peter looked at Aaron.
The brother he had mourned.
The brother who had returned.
The brother who had hidden everything.
And suddenly, one question mattered more than all the others.
“What did you do to survive?”” Peter whispered.
Aaron looked at him.
“I became the person everyone thought I was.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“The villain.””
