Chapter 5: The Child Aaron Hid From Everyone
Peter couldn't move.
The sentence hung in the air like something too heavy for the room to hold.
Drew wasn't the only child Aaron was protecting.
For three years, Peter had believed he knew everything about his brother's life.
He knew Aaron's favorite coffee order.
He knew Aaron hated being late.
He knew Aaron always tapped his fingers against the steering wheel when he was thinking.
He knew Aaron would spend his last dollar helping someone else.
But apparently, he hadn't known the most important parts.
A secret family.
A hidden trust.
A woman trapped behind a wall.
A child nobody knew existed.
Peter looked at Emma.
“What do you mean?””
Emma's eyes moved toward the window.
Reena was still standing across the street.
Still watching.
Still waiting.
“She knows I'm talking,” Emma whispered.
Peter looked back.
“Then tell me now.””
Emma shook her head.
“Not here.””
Hale stepped forward.
“Why?””
“Because this house isn't safe.””
The detective looked around.
“We've cleared it.””
Emma gave a tired, bitter smile.
“You cleared the rooms.””
She pointed toward the walls.
“You didn't clear what was hidden inside them.””
Peter felt a chill.
Hale looked at the basement door.
“Show us.””
Emma hesitated.
Then she walked toward the stairs.
Every step seemed difficult.
Not because of her body.
Because of the memories attached to every inch of the house.
Peter followed.
The basement door was at the bottom of the stairs.
Old.
Wooden.
Paint peeling.
Emma stopped in front of it.
“This is where Aaron kept everything.””
Hale examined the lock.
“There wasn't anything here when officers searched the house?””
Emma shook her head.
“Because Aaron didn't hide things in obvious places.””
Peter looked at her.
“You said he was trying to protect you.””
“Yes.””
“From Reena.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't he go to the police?””
Emma's face changed.
Pain crossed it.
“He tried.””
Peter frowned.
“When?””
“Three weeks before he died.””
“What happened?””
Emma looked at the basement door.
“Reena made sure nobody believed him.””
Peter felt anger rise.
“How?””
“She told everyone Aaron was having problems.””
Peter remembered.
The arguments.
The distance.
The way Aaron had pushed him away.
“She made him look unstable.””
Emma nodded.
“She convinced people he was paranoid.””
Peter swallowed.
“She convinced me.””
The words came out quietly.
Emma looked at him.
“No.””
Peter looked at her.
“What?””
“You convinced yourself.””
The answer hurt because it was true.
Peter had wanted to believe the easiest explanation.
That Aaron was stressed.
That Aaron was stubborn.
That Aaron needed space.
It was easier than admitting his brother might have been asking for help.
Hale opened the basement door.
A wave of cold air rose from below.
Peter looked down.
Dark stairs disappeared into blackness.
Emma whispered:
“He built this room after Lily was born.””
Peter frowned.
“Why?””
“To hide the truth.””
They descended.
The basement was larger than Peter expected.
Shelves lined the walls.
Old boxes sat in corners.
A workbench occupied the center.
At first glance, it looked ordinary.
Then Peter saw the wall.
A section of bricks looked newer than the rest.
Hale noticed too.
“That wasn't original.””
Emma nodded.
“Aaron changed it.””
Peter approached.
His hand brushed over the bricks.
“What's behind it?””
Emma looked at him.
“The answer to why he died.””
Hale immediately moved closer.
“Can we open it?””
Emma nodded.
“He wanted someone to.””
Peter stepped back as the officers removed the loose bricks.
Behind them was a small metal compartment.
Inside sat several items.
A folder.
A flash drive.
An old phone.
And a sealed envelope.
Peter stared.
The envelope had his name written on it.
PETER.
His hands shook.
“He wrote that for me.””
Emma nodded.
“He always planned to tell you.””
Peter picked it up.
It felt heavier than paper.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was one page.
His brother's handwriting.
Peter,
If you're reading this, something happened to me.
Please don't believe the first story you hear.
I made mistakes.
I trusted the wrong people.
But I need you to protect my children.
Not just Drew and Lily.
All of them.
Peter stopped.
All of them.
He looked at Emma.
His voice was barely audible.
“How many children?””
Emma closed her eyes.
“One more.””
Peter stared at the letter again.
Aaron's handwriting continued.
There is another child.
Her name is Ava.
She is the reason Reena can never find the truth.
Peter's heart pounded.
Ava.
The name felt unfamiliar.
But somehow connected.
He kept reading.
Ava is not Lily's sister.
She is not Drew's sister.
But she is my daughter.
Peter lowered the letter.
Hale looked over.
“What does it say?””
Peter didn't answer immediately.
Because he couldn't.
The impossible had become real.
Aaron had another daughter.
A child nobody knew existed.
A child Reena wanted hidden.
Peter looked at Emma.
“Where is she?””
Emma's face went pale.
“I don't know.””
“You don't know?””
“Aaron moved her.””
“When?””
“Two days before he died.””
Peter's stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“Because he found out Reena knew about her.””
Hale stepped forward.
“Who has Ava now?””
Emma looked away.
“Nobody knows.””
Peter felt a wave of panic.
A child missing.
For three years.
“Why didn't you tell anyone?””
Emma looked at him.
“Because I was trapped.””
“You could have called.””
“I tried.””
“And?””
“Reena had someone watching me.””
Peter looked toward the stairs.
“Who?””
Emma's voice dropped.
“Your brother.””
Peter froze.
“What?””
Emma shook her head.
“Not Aaron.””
“Then who?””
“Aaron's best friend.””
Peter frowned.
“Aaron's best friend?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Emma didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at the old phone inside the compartment.
“That phone has the answer.””
Peter picked it up.
The screen was cracked.
Dead.
Hale took it.
“We can recover the data.””
Peter looked around the basement.
“What about Ava?””
Emma walked to another shelf.
She pulled down a small wooden box.
Inside were drawings.
Children's drawings.
Peter looked through them.
One showed a family.
A man.
A woman.
Three children.
Another showed a house.
Another showed a red door.
At the bottom of the page, a child's handwriting had written:
DADDY SAID THE TRUTH HIDES UNDER THE FLOOR.
Peter looked at Emma.
“Whose drawings are these?””
Emma's eyes filled.
“Ava's.””
Peter froze.
“How old was she?””
“When she drew these?””
Emma nodded.
“Five.””
Peter stared at the pictures.
A five-year-old child had known there was something wrong.
A five-year-old child had been part of Aaron's secret.
Then he noticed something.
One drawing was different.
It showed a woman.
Not Reena.
A woman with dark hair.
Standing outside a house.
Behind her was a car.
The license plate was written clearly.
Peter pointed.
“Who is this?””
Emma looked.
Her face changed instantly.
“I don't know.””
Hale took the drawing.
“Are you sure?””
Emma nodded.
“I've never seen her.””
Peter looked closer.
The child had written something beneath the woman.
NOT MOMMY.
NOT REENA.
WHO IS SHE?
A noise came from upstairs.
Everyone stopped.
Hale raised his hand.
Silence.
Then another sound.
A door opening.
The officers upstairs shouted.
“Police!””
A crash followed.
Hale moved immediately.
“Stay here.””
Peter ignored him.
“No.””
“You stay with Emma.””
“My family is upstairs.””
Hale looked at him.
“This is exactly what someone wants.””
But Peter was already moving.
They reached the top floor.
One officer stood near the entrance.
Another was looking outside.
“What happened?””
Hale asked.
The officer pointed.
“Someone was inside.””
Peter looked around.
“Reena?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
The officer held up something.
A photograph.
Peter took it.
His blood ran cold.
It was Aaron.
But not the Aaron Peter remembered.
This photograph showed Aaron standing beside another man.
A man Peter recognized immediately.
Because he had seen him before.
At Aaron's funeral.
At the hospital.
At the police station.
Detective Marcus Hale.
Peter looked up slowly.
Hale's expression changed.
“What?””
Peter held out the photograph.
“Why are you in this picture?””
The room went silent.
Hale stared at the photograph.
For the first time, he looked genuinely shocked.
“I've never seen that.””
Peter looked closer.
The photograph was old.
Years old.
Aaron was smiling.
Hale was standing beside him.
And behind them was a sign.
MERGER FEDERAL BANK.
The same bank where Aaron had hidden the trust.
Peter stepped back.
“Who are you?””
Hale didn't answer.
The silence was enough.
Emma appeared behind them.
The moment she saw the photograph, her face changed.
“No.””
Peter turned.
“You know him?””
Emma looked terrified.
“He was there.””
“Where?””
“When Aaron disappeared.””
Peter felt cold.
“What do you mean disappeared?””
Emma whispered:
“Aaron wasn't supposed to die that morning.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
Emma looked at Hale.
“He was supposed to meet someone.””
Peter's voice became sharper.
“Who?””
Emma pointed at the photograph.
“Him.””
Hale stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
Emma shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“It's exactly what happened.””
Peter stared at Detective Hale.
The man who had been helping him.
The man who had promised to uncover the truth.
The man standing in the photograph beside his brother.
A new message appeared on Peter's phone.
From Reena.
He opened it.
One sentence.
NOW YOU KNOW WHY AARON DIDN'T TRUST HIM.
Peter slowly raised his eyes.
Hale saw the message.
May you like
And for the first time...
Detective Marcus Hale looked afraid.
