Chapter 4: The Secret Aaron Took to His Grave

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The hidden room.

The fake warrant.

The woman behind the wall.

The message from Reena.

Everything collided inside Peter's mind until he couldn't separate the truth from the lies anymore.

Detective Hale lowered his radio slowly.

“Everyone step away from the door.””

Peter stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because we don't know who is on the other side.””

The woman behind the wall began crying.

“Peter, please.””

Her voice shook.

“You have to listen to me.””

Peter looked at Hale.

The detective's hand was still near his weapon.

Not aimed.

But ready.

A thought entered Peter's mind.

A dangerous thought.

What if Reena had been right about one thing?

What if everyone had been looking at the wrong person?

“Open the door,” Peter said.

Hale immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“She knows Aaron.””

“We don't know who she is.””

“She knows my name.””

“So does Reena.””

Peter looked at the wall.

“She's been locked in there.””

Hale's expression remained hard.

“We don't know that.””

Peter's anger rose.

“What exactly do we know?””

The question hung in the hallway.

Because the answer was terrifying.

They knew Aaron was dead.

They knew his children had been abused.

They knew someone had hidden a woman in a secret room.

But they didn't know who was responsible.

Hale looked at the other officers.

“Check the perimeter.””

Two officers moved downstairs.

Peter stepped closer to the red door.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then the woman answered.

“My name is Emma.””

Peter's heart stopped.

Lily's words echoed in his head.

She has red hair.

Her name was Emma.

He looked at Hale.

The detective noticed his reaction.

“Emma who?””

The woman swallowed.

“Emma Whitmore.””

Peter had never heard the name.

But Aaron had.

That much was obvious.

“How long have you been in there?””

The woman didn't answer immediately.

“Almost three years.””

Peter felt sick.

Three years.

The same amount of time since Aaron died.

“You're saying Reena locked you in this room for three years?””

“No.””

Emma's voice became quieter.

“She didn't lock me here after Aaron died.””

Peter frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Aaron did.””

Silence.

The words made no sense.

Peter stepped back.

“Aaron locked you in there?””

“Yes.””

Hale looked at Peter.

“Interesting.””

Peter ignored him.

“Why would my brother lock you in a hidden room?””

Emma began crying again.

“Because he was trying to protect me.””

“From who?””

“From Reena.””

Peter stared at the door.

“Then why would Reena say you did something to Aaron?””

Emma went silent.

That silence scared Peter more than any answer.

“Emma?””

Her voice cracked.

“Because she knows Aaron blamed me.””

“For what?””

“For his death.””

Peter felt his stomach twist.

The detective moved closer.

“Peter, step away.””

But Peter couldn't.

Not now.

Not when every answer seemed to create ten more questions.

“What happened to my brother?””

Emma whispered:

“I didn't kill Aaron.””

Peter closed his eyes.

“I didn't ask if you did.””

“But that's what everyone thinks.””

“Why?””

“Because Aaron was going to expose me.””

Peter stared.

“Expose you?””

Emma took a shaky breath.

“He found out who I really was.””

“Who are you?””

“I was Reena's sister.””

The hallway went silent.

Peter felt the air leave his lungs.

“What?””

“Half-sister.””

Emma continued.

“We shared the same father.””

Peter looked at the photograph in his hand.

Aaron.

Emma.

Lily.

Everything suddenly became more complicated.

“You were in Aaron's life before Reena?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Emma hesitated.

“Because I was Lily's mother.””

Peter froze.

Even though Drew had said it.

Even though Lily had hinted.

Hearing the words from Emma herself felt different.

“You're saying Lily is your daughter?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did everyone think she was Reena's?””

Emma's voice broke.

“Because Reena made sure they did.””

Peter looked toward the hidden room.

“Why?””

“Because Reena couldn't have children.””

A silence followed.

Then Hale spoke.

“That doesn't explain kidnapping.””

Emma answered immediately.

“No.””

Her voice hardened.

“It explains obsession.””

Peter listened.

“Reena wanted Aaron's life.””

Emma continued.

“She wanted his house. His money. His business. His children.””

Peter shook his head.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“It will.””

Emma's voice dropped.

“Because Aaron wasn't just her husband.””

Peter frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“He was her way out.””

“Out of what?””

Emma laughed bitterly.

“Her past.””

The detective looked impatient.

“Enough vague answers. Tell us exactly what happened.””

Emma became quiet.

Then she said:

“Open the door.””

Hale looked at Peter.

Peter nodded.

“We need answers.””

The detective examined the lock.

“It may be trapped.””

Peter looked at him.

“Trapped?””

“Old houses have surprises.””

But his tone suggested he meant something else.

Carefully, he removed the door panel around the lock.

Inside was a simple mechanism.

No alarm.

No trap.

Just a hidden latch.

He opened it.

The door creaked.

A woman stepped out slowly.

Peter almost didn't recognize her.

She was thin.

Too thin.

Her red hair hung past her shoulders, tangled and dull.

She wore old clothes covered in dust.

But her eyes were alive.

Terrified.

And familiar.

Not because Peter knew her.

Because she looked like someone Aaron would have protected.

Emma stepped into the hallway.

The first thing she did was look at the photograph in Peter's hand.

Then she covered her mouth.

“He kept it.””

Peter stared.

“You knew about this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why leave it here?””

Emma looked away.

“Because Aaron knew someone would find it eventually.””

“Who?””

“Someone who believed him.””

Peter swallowed.

“Why didn't you escape?””

Emma's face changed.

Pain.

Shame.

Fear.

“Because I tried.””

“And?””

“Reena stopped me.””

“How?””

Emma looked at the floor.

“She threatened Lily.””

Peter felt anger surge.

“She had Lily?””

“No.””

Emma shook her head.

“She convinced Aaron that she did.””

Peter stared.

“What?””

Emma sat against the wall, exhausted.

“Reena was very good at making people afraid.””

The detective crouched nearby.

“Start from the beginning.””

Emma looked at him.

“You really want the truth?””

“Yes.””

She nodded slowly.

“Then you need to know what Aaron discovered.””

Peter leaned forward.

“What did he discover?””

“That Reena wasn't who she claimed to be.””

Hale frowned.

“Explain.””

Emma looked at Peter.

“She wasn't just a woman trying to build a family.””

Peter felt cold.

“She had another reason for marrying Aaron.””

“What reason?””

Emma whispered:

“Money.””

Peter shook his head.

“Aaron didn't have that much.””

“He did.””

“No.””

Emma looked at him.

“Peter, your brother had a life insurance policy.””

Peter froze.

“Yes.””

“And a trust.””

Peter's face changed.

“What trust?””

Emma stared at him.

“The one he created for his children.””

Peter had never heard of it.

“That's impossible.””

“It was created before he married Reena.””

Peter looked at Hale.

The detective immediately understood.

“Where is the trust?””

Emma answered.

“Reena spent years trying to find it.””

“And?””

“She couldn't.””

“Why?””

Emma looked at the brass key in Peter's hand.

“Because Aaron hid it.””

Peter looked down.

The number 27 stared back at him.

“What does 27 open?””

Emma hesitated.

“The safety deposit box.””

Peter's eyes widened.

“Where?””

“At the bank.””

“Which bank?””

Emma looked toward the photograph.

“Aaron's favorite one.””

Peter frowned.

He had no idea.

Then he remembered.

A place his brother had trusted.

A place where Aaron kept important documents.

“Mercer Federal.””

Emma nodded.

“Yes.””

Hale stood.

“We need to go there.””

Peter looked at him.

“Wait.””

He turned back to Emma.

“You said Aaron locked you here.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

“Because he knew Reena was watching him.””

“Watching him?””

“She knew about me.””

Peter frowned.

“How?””

Emma looked at him.

“Because Reena wasn't just Aaron's wife.””

A pause.

“She was his enemy.””

Peter stared.

“What does that mean?””

Emma whispered:

“She was the reason he started investigating his own death.””

Peter felt a chill.

“My brother investigated his death?””

“Yes.””

“He knew he was going to die?””

Emma looked away.

“He knew someone was trying to make sure he did.””

The detective's expression changed.

“Did Aaron leave evidence?””

Emma nodded.

“He left everything.””

“Where?””

She pointed downstairs.

“In the basement.””

Peter froze.

“The basement?””

Emma nodded.

“The one with the red door.””

Peter stared.

“But we’re at Aaron's old house.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Reena lock the children in a basement at her house?””

Emma looked at him.

“Because she copied Aaron's hiding place.””

Peter felt his skin crawl.

“She recreated it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Emma's voice became barely audible.

“To remind him that she owned everything he loved.””

Peter looked toward the stairs.

The basement suddenly felt closer.

Dark.

Waiting.

Hale's radio crackled.

An officer's voice came through.

“Detective, we found something outside.””

“What?””

“A vehicle.””

“Whose?””

A pause.

Then:

“Reena's.””

Peter's blood turned cold.

“She followed us.””

Hale looked at the window.

The street outside was empty.

Too empty.

“Where is she now?””

The officer answered:

“We don't know.””

Peter moved toward the window.

Then he saw it.

A figure standing across the street.

Watching the house.

A woman.

Dark hair.

Still.

Peter recognized her immediately.

Reena.

She wasn't running.

She wasn't hiding.

She was waiting.

As if she wanted them to see her.

Peter stepped toward the door.

Hale grabbed his arm.

“Don't.””

But Reena lifted her hand.

She pointed directly at Peter.

Then she pointed toward the basement.

And mouthed four words.

YOU DON'T KNOW HIM.

Peter stared.

Aaron.

His brother.

The man he thought he understood.

The man whose children had crawled through the streets looking for help.

The man who had hidden a woman behind a red door.

For the first time, Peter wondered if Aaron had been hiding the truth.

Or if Aaron had been hiding something much worse.

Behind him, Emma whispered:

“Peter.””

He turned.

Her face had gone pale.

“What?””

She looked at Reena through the window.

Then at the key in his hand.

“There's one thing Aaron never told you.””

Peter waited.

May you like

Emma whispered:

“Drew wasn't the only child he was protecting.””
