Chapter 11: The Deal That Destroyed a Family
Peter stared at his brother.
The word stayed between them.
Villain.
Not because Evelyn said it.
Not because anyone else believed it.
Because Aaron had said it himself.
For three years, Peter had imagined every possible explanation for why his brother disappeared.
He imagined kidnapping.
He imagined blackmail.
He imagined someone forcing Aaron away from his family.
But he had never imagined this.
That Aaron had made a choice.
A deal.
A secret agreement that changed everything.
Peter slowly lowered the photograph.
“What did you do?””
Aaron didn't answer.
The silence was worse than any confession.
Peter stepped closer.
“I asked you a question.””
Aaron looked at him.
“I saved them.””
Peter shook his head.
“That isn't an answer.””
“It is.””
“No.””
Peter's voice rose.
“You don't get to disappear, let me bury you, let your children suffer, and then tell me you saved them.””
Aaron closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“Do you?””
The pain in Peter's voice surprised everyone.
Even himself.
“I spent years thinking you were gone.””
Aaron looked down.
“I know.””
“I blamed myself.””
“I know.””
“I thought maybe if I had answered one more call…”
Peter stopped.
His voice broke.
Aaron looked devastated.
“Peter.””
“No.””
Peter stepped back.
“You don't get to comfort me.””
Aaron said nothing.
Because he knew Peter was right.
Evelyn watched the brothers quietly.
Almost enjoying the pain.
Peter noticed.
“You wanted this.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“What?””
“You wanted me to know this.””
A small smile appeared on her face.
“I wanted you to see your brother clearly.””
Peter shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Aaron.
“You wanted to break us.””
Evelyn didn't deny it.
“Families are fragile things.””
Aaron's expression hardened.
“Stay away from him.””
Evelyn laughed softly.
“You still don't understand.””
She looked at Peter.
“I didn't destroy your family.””
Her eyes moved back to Aaron.
“He did.””
Peter looked at his brother.
Aaron didn't argue.
That scared him.
“Tell me.””
Aaron looked at him.
“Peter.””
“No.””
Peter's voice became quiet.
“Tell me everything.””
The station became silent.
Even the officers nearby seemed to understand this was no longer an investigation.
It was a family finally facing the truth.
Aaron took a slow breath.
“Three years ago, I discovered Reena wasn't who she said she was.””
Peter nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
Aaron shook his head.
“You know the surface.””
He looked at Evelyn.
“Reena wasn't trying to steal my money.””
Peter frowned.
“Then what?””
“She was trying to gain control.””
“Control of what?””
“Everything.””
Aaron looked at Peter.
“My company. My assets. My children.””
Peter remembered the basement files.
The documents.
The accounts.
“But why?””
Aaron's face darkened.
“Because Evelyn taught her how.””
Evelyn smiled.
“I taught her how to survive.””
Aaron looked at her.
“You taught her how to destroy people.””
Evelyn shrugged.
“Sometimes those things look the same.””
Peter felt disgusted.
“So you recruited Reena.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“I guided her.””
“You manipulated her.””
“She wanted what I offered.””
Peter shook his head.
“And you?””
Evelyn looked at Aaron.
“I wanted Aaron.””
The answer shocked him.
Peter looked at his brother.
“What does that mean?””
Aaron looked away.
Evelyn answered.
“It means Aaron was special.””
Peter almost laughed.
“Special?””
“Yes.””
“Because he had money?””
“No.””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Because he had something most powerful people don't have.””
“What?””
“A conscience.””
The word sounded strange coming from her.
Peter looked at Aaron.
“You knew her before?””
Aaron didn't answer.
Evelyn did.
“Yes.””
Peter waited.
Aaron finally spoke.
“I met her when I was younger.””
“How?””
Aaron looked uncomfortable.
“She helped me.””
Peter frowned.
“With what?””
“My father.””
The answer surprised him.
“What about your father?””
Aaron looked down.
“After Dad died, I was struggling.””
Peter remembered.
They had both struggled.
But Aaron had always seemed stronger.
“I found Evelyn.””
Peter looked at her.
“She helped you?””
Aaron nodded.
“At first.””
Peter immediately understood.
“At first.””
Aaron's expression changed.
“She taught me how to protect myself.””
“And then?””
“She taught me how to stop trusting people.””
Peter felt a sadness he couldn't explain.
Because suddenly he realized something.
Aaron had been carrying this longer than anyone knew.
“You knew her before Reena.””
“Yes.””
“And you still married Reena.””
Aaron nodded.
“Because I thought I could fix things.””
Peter closed his eyes.
His brother had always done that.
Tried to save people.
Even people who were hurting him.
“What happened the night you disappeared?””
Aaron looked toward Evelyn.
“She gave me a choice.””
Peter waited.
“What choice?””
Aaron's voice became quiet.
“Let my children disappear.””
Peter's face changed.
“Or?””
“Disappear myself.””
The room went silent.
Peter understood.
Aaron hadn't simply run.
He had traded himself.
“What does that mean?””
Aaron looked at him.
“Evelyn wanted access to my life.””
Peter frowned.
“My life?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because of what I owned.””
Peter shook his head.
“No.””
Aaron looked at him.
“You still don't understand.””
He pointed toward the files.
“It wasn't the money.””
Peter looked confused.
“Then what?””
Aaron whispered:
“The trust.””
Peter remembered the hidden documents.
The bank.
The accounts.
“What about it?””
Aaron looked at Evelyn.
“She wanted the person who controlled it.””
Peter's eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Aaron didn't answer.
Evelyn smiled.
“I think Peter deserves to know.””
Aaron looked at her.
“Don't.””
She ignored him.
“The trust wasn't created for Aaron.””
Peter froze.
“What?””
“It was created by your father.””
Peter felt a strange emptiness.
“Our father?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Evelyn smiled.
“Because your father knew Aaron was different.””
Peter shook his head.
“My father died before the trust existed.””
Aaron looked at him.
“No.””
Peter froze.
“What?””
Aaron's face was full of regret.
“He didn't.””
The words hit like a physical blow.
Peter stared.
“What are you saying?””
Aaron swallowed.
“Dad didn't die when we thought he did.””
The room went completely silent.
Peter felt dizzy.
“No.””
“I found out years later.””
“You're lying.””
“I wish I was.””
Peter stepped backward.
Everything he knew was changing.
His father.
His brother.
His family.
“What happened?””
Aaron looked broken.
“Dad disappeared.””
Peter shook his head.
“No.””
“He made people believe he was dead.””
“Why?””
Aaron looked at Evelyn.
“Because of her.””
Evelyn smiled.
“Your father was smarter than Aaron.””
Peter looked at her.
“What did you do?””
Evelyn didn't answer.
Aaron did.
“She convinced him his family would be safer without him.””
Peter felt anger.
“That sounds familiar.””
Aaron looked at him.
The pain was obvious.
“Yes.””
Peter realized.
Aaron had repeated their father's mistake.
Disappearing to protect them.
Believing distance was protection.
And all it had done was leave them alone.
“So Dad was alive?””
Aaron nodded.
“For a while.””
Peter's voice became small.
“Where is he now?””
Aaron looked away.
“He died.””
Peter closed his eyes.
Of course.
Another loss.
Another secret.
“When?””
“Two years after I disappeared.””
Peter looked at him.
“And you knew?””
“Yes.””
“Did you tell me?””
Aaron couldn't answer.
Peter laughed bitterly.
“Of course not.””
The silence hurt.
Then Evelyn interrupted.
“Now you understand.””
Peter looked at her.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“Your family has always survived through secrets.””
Peter looked at Aaron.
Then away.
She continued.
“Aaron disappeared because he believed he could control the damage.””
Peter said nothing.
“He couldn't.””
Aaron looked angry.
“Enough.””
Evelyn ignored him.
“He made one mistake.””
“What?””
“He trusted the wrong person.””
Peter looked at Hale.
The detective had been silent the entire time.
Now he finally spoke.
“She’s manipulating you.””
Everyone turned.
Hale looked at Aaron.
“You know that.””
Aaron stared.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Hale stepped forward.
“You think she saved your children?””
Aaron's face changed.
Hale continued.
“She didn't.””
Peter looked between them.
“What?””
Hale looked at Evelyn.
“She took them.””
Evelyn smiled.
“Of course I did.””
Peter froze.
The honesty shocked him.
“You admit it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at Aaron.
“Because he needs to make a choice.””
Aaron's expression changed.
“What choice?””
Evelyn smiled.
“Your brother.””
Peter felt cold.
“No.””
Aaron stepped forward.
“Don't.””
Evelyn continued.
“Three years ago, you chose yourself.””
She looked at Peter.
“Now he chooses between you and his children.””
Peter stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Evelyn pulled out her phone.
She pressed a button.
A video appeared.
Drew.
Lily.
Ava.
Sitting together in a room.
Alive.
Terrified.
Peter moved closer.
“Where are they?””
Evelyn smiled.
“Close.””
Aaron stared at the screen.
“Let them go.””
“No.””
“Please.””
The word shocked Peter.
Aaron had never begged anyone.
Not even when their mother died.
Evelyn smiled.
“Say it.””
Aaron looked at her.
“Say what?””
“That you were wrong.””
Aaron's face tightened.
“You want an apology?””
“I want the truth.””
Peter watched.
Aaron looked at the children.
Then at Peter.
Then back at Evelyn.
Finally, he whispered:
“I was wrong.””
Evelyn smiled.
“Not enough.””
Aaron closed his eyes.
“I chose the wrong person to trust.””
Peter felt something break.
Because Aaron wasn't looking at Evelyn.
He was looking at Hale.
Hale went still.
Evelyn smiled.
“Exactly.””
Peter turned.
“What does that mean?””
Aaron looked at Hale.
And the pain in his eyes answered before his words did.
“Marcus wasn't the one who betrayed me.””
Peter froze.
Aaron continued.
“I was.””
Everyone went silent.
Peter stared.
“What?””
Aaron looked at Hale.
“I blamed him because I couldn't accept the truth.””
Hale looked shocked.
Aaron whispered:
“Marcus tried to save me.””
Peter looked at Hale.
The entire story shifted again.
Hale wasn't the betrayer.
He was something else.
A witness.
A person who knew the truth.
Aaron looked at Peter.
“The person who betrayed me was someone closer.””
Peter felt his stomach drop.
“Who?””
Aaron looked toward Evelyn.
Then toward the door.
Then finally at Peter.
“Someone who has been standing beside you this entire time.””
Peter froze.
“No.””
Aaron's expression was full of regret.
“Yes.””
Before Peter could ask another question, every light in the station shut off.
Darkness swallowed the room.
A scream came from the hallway.
Then the sound of a door locking.
When emergency lights turned on, Evelyn was gone.
And on the floor beside Peter was a note.
One sentence.
YOUR BROTHER STILL HASN'T TOLD YOU THE WORST PART.
Peter picked it up.
May you like
Underneath was another line.
ASK HIM WHO REALLY KILLED REENA.
