Chapter 9: The Betrayal That Changed Everything

The name on the document belonged to Charles Ashcroft’s oldest business partner.

My uncle.

Thomas Ashcroft.

The man who had helped my father build the company.

The man who attended every family dinner.

The man who held my hand at my father’s funeral and promised he would protect me.

For years, I believed Thomas was the one person I could trust without question.

Now I was looking at evidence that suggested he had been preparing to destroy everything my father built.

I refused to believe it.

Not immediately.

Because sometimes the hardest betrayals are not the ones that surprise you.

They are the ones you desperately hope are impossible.

“I need proof,” I said.

Claire nodded.

“We’ll get it.””

“No.””

She looked confused.

“I need more than evidence.””

I looked at the city below.

“I need the truth.””

Thomas arrived at my office the next morning.

Calm.

Confident.

Almost too confident.

“Eleanor.””

“Thomas.””

He smiled.

“You look tired.””

“I’ve been busy.””

He laughed softly.

“Running an empire is not easy.””

I watched him carefully.

“No.””

He sat down.

“I heard about the rumors.””

“Rumors?””

“Yes. About financial problems.””

I almost smiled.

Interesting.

He came here pretending concern.

But he already knew.

“How unfortunate.””

I leaned back.

“Very.””

He studied me.

“You know, Eleanor, your father made mistakes.””

“My father?””

“Yes.””

His tone changed.

“He trusted people too easily.””

The irony was almost painful.

“You think so?””

“I do.””

I stared at him.

“Who did he trust too much?””

Thomas looked away for half a second.

Then smiled.

“Many people.””

A lie.

A small one.

But I saw it.

“Thomas.””

“Yes?””

“Did you help Richard Whitmore?””

The room went completely still.

For the first time, his mask cracked.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Then he laughed.

“Eleanor, that’s ridiculous.””

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

He stood.

“I helped your father build this company.””

“And now?””

He looked at me.

“Now I’m helping protect it.””

The words were carefully chosen.

Too carefully.

After he left, I sat silently.

Claire entered.

“You asked him.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“He lied.””

She nodded.

“I thought so.””

I looked at the door.

“I just never thought it would be him.””

That evening, I found something unexpected.

An old letter.

Hidden inside one of my father’s private files.

It was dated six months before his death.

The handwriting was his.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Dear Eleanor,

If you are reading this, something has happened that forced you to look deeper into Ashcroft Holdings.

I want you to remember one thing.

The greatest threats rarely come from enemies.

They come from people who believe they deserve what you have.

My heart stopped.

I continued reading.

There is someone close to this family who has been patient for a long time.

Someone who believes loyalty is weakness.

Someone who thinks blood gives them ownership.

I looked at the signature.

My father knew.

He knew.

But he never told me.

Why?

The final sentence answered that.

Because I needed you to discover the truth yourself.

I closed the letter.

For years, I thought my father left me an empire.

I was wrong.

He left me a battlefield.

And now I finally understood.

The fight had never started at the banquet.

The banquet was only the moment everyone saw the war.

My phone rang.

Adrian.

I answered.

“What?””

His voice was urgent.

“Eleanor, listen to me.””

“What happened?””

“I found something about Thomas.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“He wasn’t working with Richard.””

I frowned.

“Then who?””

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“He was working against him.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I think Thomas discovered Richard’s plan.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

Silence.

Then Adrian said:

“There’s someone else.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

“I don’t know yet.””

The call ended.

I sat there holding the phone.

The enemy had changed.

The truth had changed.

And suddenly, the one person I thought betrayed me might have been the person trying to protect me.

May you like

The problem was…

I no longer knew who to trust.
