Chapter 7: The Secret Adrian Never Knew
Three weeks after Adrian Vale lost his position as CEO, Vale Meridian Group entered a strange new era.
The company was still standing.
The investors had not abandoned us.
The employees had not walked away.
The world had expected chaos.
Instead, something unexpected happened.
The company became stronger.
Because for the first time in years, decisions were being made based on reality instead of Adrian’s image.
The first major change was simple.
Transparency.
I opened departments that had been hidden behind unnecessary layers of management. I reviewed contracts personally. I questioned expenses that had been approved without proper oversight.
And every time I uncovered something questionable, the same pattern appeared.
Someone had protected Adrian’s reputation at the expense of the company.
He had not built a perfect empire.
He had built a beautiful illusion.
My father used to tell me something when I was young.
“Eleanor, never fear finding the truth. The truth only hurts people who built their lives around lies.””
At the time, I thought it was just another business lesson.
Now I understood.
Truth was not cruel.
Truth was simply patient.
It waited until people became too comfortable.
My assistant Claire entered my office carrying a folder.
“You’re going to want to see this.””
I looked up.
“What is it?””
She placed it on my desk.
“Adrian’s old executive reports.””
I frowned.
“I already reviewed those.””
“Not these.””
She opened the folder.
“These were archived separately.””
I scanned the documents.
At first, nothing seemed unusual.
Then I noticed the signatures.
My expression changed.
“Who approved these?””
Claire looked at the page.
“Adrian.””
“And who verified them?””
She hesitated.
“That’s the problem.””
I continued reading.
Millions of dollars had moved through several subsidiaries over the past two years.
Not illegally.
Not obviously.
But suspiciously.
Money had been transferred through companies with no clear operational purpose.
I looked at Claire.
“Find out who owns these subsidiaries.””
She nodded.
“Already started.””
I leaned back.
Something felt wrong.
This was not about Vanessa.
This was not about the affair.
This was bigger.
Adrian had always been arrogant.
But he was not stupid.
Someone had influenced him.
Someone had encouraged his worst instincts.
My phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
Normally, I ignored unknown calls.
But something made me answer.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was silence.
Then a man spoke.
“Eleanor Ashcroft?””
“Yes.””
“You don’t know me.””
“That depends.””
A nervous laugh.
“My name is Daniel Cross.””
The name immediately caught my attention.
Daniel Cross.
Former senior strategist at Vale Meridian.
He had disappeared almost two years ago.
“I know who you are.””
“Then you know why I’m calling.””
I stood.
“Go on.””
His voice lowered.
“Adrian wasn’t acting alone.””
The room suddenly felt colder.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying someone wanted him distracted.””
“From what?””
Another pause.
“From the company’s real problems.””
I gripped the phone.
“Where are you?””
“I can’t tell you.””
“Then why call me?””
“Because I made a mistake.””
His voice became quieter.
“I helped create the monster.””
Before I could respond, the call ended.
I stared at the phone.
For years, I believed Adrian’s greatest weakness was his ego.
Now I wondered if his ego had been someone else’s weapon.
That evening, I met Adrian.
Not because I missed him.
Not because I wanted to forgive him.
Because I needed answers.
He looked surprised when I arrived at the restaurant.
“I didn’t expect you.””
“I need information.””
His expression changed immediately.
“What happened?””
I placed a document on the table.
“Do you recognize these companies?””
He read the names.
The color slowly disappeared from his face.
“Where did you get this?””
“That’s not an answer.””
He looked around.
Then lowered his voice.
“These were part of an acquisition strategy.””
“Approved by who?””
He hesitated.
“Me.””
I watched him carefully.
“But?””
His jaw tightened.
“But I didn’t create the structure.””
“Who did?””
Adrian looked uncomfortable.
For the first time since I knew him, he seemed afraid.
“Eleanor…”
“Who?””
He looked down.
“Richard Whitmore.””
My eyes narrowed.
Vanessa’s father.
A powerful investor.
A man known for controlling businesses from behind the scenes.
“You’re saying Vanessa’s father was involved?””
Adrian nodded slowly.
“He approached me three years ago.””
“And you trusted him?””
“I thought he could help expand the company.””
I almost laughed.
“You thought he could help you become bigger.””
He looked away.
“Yes.””
I studied him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
A painful silence followed.
Then:
“Because I wanted one thing that was mine.””
The honesty surprised me.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Success.””
My expression softened slightly.
Not because I forgave him.
Because I finally understood.
Adrian had spent years chasing the image of being self-made.
And in doing so, he became controlled by people who knew exactly what he wanted.
“You were never trying to build an empire,” I said.
He swallowed.
“You were trying to prove you deserved one.””
He didn’t argue.
Because it was true.
The next morning, I received another message from Daniel Cross.
A location.
A time.
Nothing else.
I went alone.
I found him in a quiet coffee shop on the edge of the city.
He looked exhausted.
Older than his age.
“You came.””
“Yes.””
He looked nervous.
“I wasn’t sure you would.””
“You called the owner of the company and told her there was a threat.””
A small smile crossed his face.
“I suppose that was a good way to get your attention.””
I sat down.
“Start talking.””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Adrian was never supposed to become CEO.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Three years ago, Richard Whitmore wanted control of Vale Meridian.””
“How?””
“By placing someone loyal in leadership.””
I stared at him.
“Adrian.””
Daniel nodded.
“He knew Adrian’s weakness.””
“Ambition.””
“Exactly.””
I felt anger rising.
Not because I discovered a conspiracy.
Because Adrian had been so easy to manipulate.
“What was the goal?””
Daniel looked at me.
“To weaken the company from the inside.””
The words settled heavily.
“Why?””
“Because once the company became vulnerable, Richard planned to buy controlling interest.””
I understood immediately.
A hostile takeover.
Not through force.
Through patience.
They would damage the company.
Lower its value.
Then purchase it cheaply.
I looked out the window.
All these years.
All the betrayal.
All the humiliation.
It was never only about Vanessa.
Vanessa was a distraction.
Adrian was a tool.
And I had been so focused on the personal betrayal that I almost missed the bigger war.
Daniel leaned forward.
“There’s more.””
“What?””
He hesitated.
“The final move was scheduled for next month.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who is involved?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Someone inside Ashcroft Holdings.””
For the first time in years…
I felt afraid.
Not for myself.
For the empire my father built.
Because betrayal from enemies was expected.
May you like
But betrayal from family?
That was different.
