Chapter 5: The Mistress Who Wanted My Crown

Vanessa Whitmore had always known how to enter a room.

That was her talent.

Not intelligence.

Not leadership.

Not strategy.

Appearance.

Confidence.

The ability to make people believe she belonged somewhere before they questioned why she was there.

When she arrived at Ashcroft Tower the next morning, everyone knew who she was.

The woman from the banquet.

The woman who stood beside Adrian while he destroyed his marriage.

The woman who believed she was about to inherit my position.

She walked into my office wearing a white designer suit.

Perfect hair.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect smile.

But her eyes betrayed her.

She was nervous.

“Eleanor.””

I didn’t invite her to sit.

“Vanessa.””

She looked around my office.

I watched her expression change.

The view.

The artwork.

The private collection my father left behind.

She was finally seeing the world Adrian had hidden from her.

“You built all this.””

It wasn’t a question.

“Yes.””

She swallowed.

“I didn’t know.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“That was the point.””

She smiled awkwardly.

“I think we both know why I’m here.””

“I do.””

She stepped closer.

“I want to explain.””

I almost smiled.

Everyone wanted to explain after the damage was done.

“Go ahead.””

Vanessa took a breath.

“I never intended for things to happen this way.””

I said nothing.

“He told me your marriage was over.””

Of course.

The oldest excuse.

“He said you two were just partners.””

I looked at her.

“And you believed him?””

Her silence answered.

I walked toward the window.

“Do you know what Adrian told me when we first met?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“He told me he hated people who used others.””

A bitter smile crossed my face.

“He said his biggest fear was becoming someone who forgot the people who helped him.””

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“He became that person.””

“Yes.””

I turned back.

“But you helped him.””

Her expression hardened slightly.

“I loved him.””

The honesty almost surprised me.

Almost.

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“Or did you love who you thought he was becoming?””

Vanessa looked away.

I continued.

“You saw a powerful CEO. A wealthy man. A man everyone respected.””

“That’s not fair.””

“No?””

I walked back to my desk.

“Did you know who owned the company?””

She hesitated.

“No.””

“Did you know the homes you visited were purchased through Ashcroft assets?””

Her face changed.

“No.””

“The Bentley you arrived in?””

Silence.

“My company paid for the lease.””

Vanessa’s confidence disappeared.

She sat down slowly.

“I didn’t know.””

“That is the difference between you and me.””

I leaned forward.

“I knew everything.””

The room became quiet.

Vanessa looked exhausted.

“Why are you telling me this?””

“Because you still don’t understand.””

She looked up.

“Understand what?””

“That Adrian didn’t choose you because you were special.””

The words hurt her.

I saw it.

But I needed her to hear them.

“He chose you because you made him feel powerful.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“You think you’re better than me.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I think we both made the mistake of believing he was better than he was.””

That silenced her.

For a moment, she looked less like my enemy.

More like another person who had been fooled.

Then her phone buzzed.

She glanced down.

Her expression changed.

“What is it?””

She didn’t answer.

I noticed the fear.

“Vanessa.””

Slowly, she placed the phone on the desk.

“It’s my lawyer.””

“And?””

She looked at me.

“Adrian canceled my executive appointment.””

I expected that.

People like Adrian protected themselves first.

“He said the board forced him.””

I almost laughed.

“The board did.””

She stood.

“So I lose everything?””

I looked at her.

“You didn’t lose everything.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you finally found out what kind of man you were standing beside.””

She stared at me.

Then quietly left.

That evening, Adrian arrived at Ashcroft Tower.

Alone.

No assistants.

No photographers.

No Vanessa.

Just him.

For the first time in years, he looked like the young man I remembered.

Tired.

Lost.

Human.

He entered my office.

“Eleanor.””

I nodded.

“Sit.””

He sat across from me.

For several moments, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

“I was wrong.””

The words were simple.

But they were heavy.

I waited.

“I thought I built everything.””

He looked down.

“I believed everyone was beneath me.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“And I hurt the one person who was actually on my side.””

I remained silent.

Because an apology was only the beginning.

Not the ending.

“Do you hate me?”” he asked.

I looked at him.

“No.””

He seemed surprised.

“I should.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Hate would mean you still have power over me.””

The pain in his eyes was real.

For the first time, I believed he understood.

But understanding came too late.

“I want to fix this.””

I looked at him.

“You can’t fix what you destroyed.””

His eyes lowered.

“Then what happens now?””

I picked up the file in front of me.

“The company moves forward.””

“And me?””

I paused.

“That depends.””

“On what?””

May you like

I looked directly at him.

“Whether Adrian Vale can survive without being the king.””
