Chapter 11: The Betrayer Reveals Himself
The first rule of business warfare was simple.
Never show your opponent what you know.
The second rule was more important.
Never let them know you are afraid.
So we acted normal.
That was the hardest part.
Every day, I walked into Ashcroft Tower knowing someone inside the building was working against me.
Every meeting became a performance.
Every conversation became a test.
I watched people carefully.
Not for mistakes.
For confidence.
Because betrayal changes people.
Someone hiding guilt often becomes nervous.
Someone hiding power becomes arrogant.
And the person we were searching for?
They were becoming careless.
Three days after our private meeting, the next attack came.
A confidential acquisition plan leaked.
Only five people had access.
Me.
Marcus.
Claire.
Thomas.
And one executive assistant from the legal department.
The media received the information before we even knew it was gone.
The headline appeared within minutes.
*ASHCROFT HOLDINGS ACCUSED OF MARKET MANIPULATION*
I stared at the screen.
“This is impossible.””
Marcus looked furious.
“They’re trying to destroy our credibility.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“They’re trying to force investors to panic.””
Claire understood immediately.
“They want the stock price to fall.””
“And then?””
Thomas answered.
“Someone buys.””
Exactly.
Richard Whitmore’s plan.
The same plan.
Different attack.
I looked at the access records.
The document had been downloaded at 2:13 a.m.
From inside the building.
My eyes narrowed.
“Find out who was here.””
Claire nodded.
But before she could leave, the office door opened.
Adrian walked in.
Everyone looked surprised.
“What are you doing here?””
He looked serious.
“I found something.””
I sighed.
“What now?””
He placed a file on the table.
“The person leaking information.””
My heart tightened.
“How do you know?””
“Because I helped create the system they’re using.””
Nobody spoke.
Adrian looked ashamed.
“I built the access structure three years ago.””
I opened the file.
Inside were security logs.
One name appeared repeatedly.
My eyes stopped.
“No.””
Adrian watched my reaction.
“You know him?””
I couldn’t speak.
Because the name belonged to someone I had trusted for years.
Someone who had been with Ashcroft Holdings since my father’s time.
Someone who knew every weakness.
Every protection.
Every secret.
“Ethan.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“Ethan Brooks?””
I nodded slowly.
Our chief legal strategist.
The man who reviewed every major contract.
The man who helped protect Ashcroft from lawsuits.
The man who had access to everything.
Claire whispered:
“Why would he do this?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I knew.
Greed rarely announces itself.
It disguises itself as ambition.
We found Ethan that evening.
He did not run.
That surprised me.
When he entered the conference room, he looked calm.
Almost relieved.
“Eleanor.””
I looked at him.
“Did you know?””
He smiled faintly.
“Yes.””
The room froze.
“You knew we were investigating you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why come?””
He sat down.
“Because I’m tired.””
“Tired of what?””
He looked around.
“Being invisible.””
The words reminded me of Adrian.
Another person destroyed by the desire to be recognized.
“I spent twenty years protecting this company.””
Ethan continued.
“And who received the credit?””
Nobody answered.
“You.””
His eyes moved to me.
“Your father.””
A bitter smile.
“Adrian.””
I stared at him.
“So you decided to destroy it?””
“No.””
His voice sharpened.
“I decided to take what I deserved.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not necessity.
Not survival.
Entitlement.
“You worked for my father.””
“Yes.””
“You worked for me.””
“Yes.””
“And you thought that gave you ownership?””
His jaw tightened.
“I helped build this.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
The room became quiet.
“You helped protect it.””
His face hardened.
“There’s no difference.””
“There is.””
I stepped closer.
“My father built something. You maintained it. Adrian represented it. But none of you owned it.””
A pause.
“Only one person did.””
Ethan looked at me.
“And you think you’re different?””
The question surprised me.
“What?””
“You hide behind your father’s name.””
My expression changed.
“You think this is about inheritance?””
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“That’s where you’re wrong.””
I placed a folder on the table.
“My father gave me ownership.””
I opened it.
“But I built my own empire before I ever touched Ashcroft Holdings.””
Ethan stared.
Because he never knew.
Nobody did.
The company I inherited was only one piece.
I had created others.
Investments.
Acquisitions.
Partnerships.
My father gave me a foundation.
I built the building.
Ethan looked away.
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
The police arrived an hour later.
Ethan was not arrested immediately.
The investigation would take time.
But his betrayal was exposed.
Another enemy removed.
Another wound revealed.
But something bothered me.
After Ethan left, Adrian approached.
“Eleanor.””
“What?””
He looked concerned.
“This isn’t over.””
I sighed.
“Richard.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at the empty chair where Ethan had been sitting.
“He lost his inside person.””
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“Which means he’ll stop playing carefully.””
And he was right.
Because the next morning, Richard Whitmore made his move.
May you like
He didn’t attack the company.
He attacked me.
