Chapter 10: The Man Who Was Never The Enemy
Trust was a dangerous thing.
I learned that after twelve years of marriage.
I learned it when the man I loved stood on a stage and destroyed me in front of hundreds of people.
I learned it when I discovered the woman beside him was not the only person hiding something from me.
And now, I was learning it again.
Because the man I believed had betrayed my family might have been the only one trying to save it.
Thomas Ashcroft.
My father’s closest friend.
My uncle in every way except blood.
The man who taught me how to negotiate my first business deal.
The man who told me after my father’s funeral that I didn’t have to carry the weight of Ashcroft Holdings alone.
Could he really have been protecting me?
Or was this another carefully designed lie?
I spent the entire night reviewing everything.
Every conversation.
Every decision.
Every moment when Thomas had appeared.
The strange thing was…
The more I looked, the less he looked like an enemy.
He never pushed for control.
He never demanded a position.
He never challenged my authority.
If he wanted my company, he had opportunities.
Many of them.
So why had the evidence pointed toward him?
Because someone wanted me to believe it.
And that meant the real enemy was smarter than I thought.
The next morning, I called Adrian.
He answered immediately.
“You believe me?””
“No.””
A pause.
Then a quiet laugh.
“Fair.””
“I believe there’s information you don’t have.””
“That’s probably true.””
I looked at the documents on my desk.
“What did you find?””
“Records.””
“What kind?””
“Private communications between Richard Whitmore and someone inside Vale Meridian.””
My expression changed.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Adrian.””
“I’m serious, Eleanor.””
His voice sounded frustrated.
“The messages were encrypted. Whoever this person is, they know how to hide.””
I looked out the window.
“Then why tell me?””
“Because I spent years being manipulated.””
Silence.
“I know what it feels like.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
Adrian continued.
“I thought I was using Richard.””
A bitter laugh.
“I thought I was smarter than everyone.””
He paused.
“I wasn’t.””
For once, he wasn’t trying to protect his pride.
That was new.
“Send me everything.””
“I will.””
After the call ended, Claire entered.
“We found something.””
I looked up.
“What?””
She placed a tablet on my desk.
“Thomas’s financial records.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because I investigated him.””
“And?””
She turned the screen toward me.
“He’s been transferring money.””
My heart sank.
“To whom?””
Claire hesitated.
“Not Richard.””
I looked closer.
The transactions were going to a private account.
A charity foundation.
I recognized the name.
My father’s foundation.
“What?””
Claire nodded.
“He’s been secretly funding it.””
I stared at the records.
For years, Thomas had been donating millions to causes my father cared about.
Quietly.
Without taking credit.
That was exactly what my father would have done.
I whispered:
“He wasn’t stealing.””
“No.””
Claire looked at me.
“He was protecting something.””
I went to see Thomas that afternoon.
He looked surprised when I entered his home.
“Eleanor?””
“We need to talk.””
He studied my face.
Then slowly nodded.
“I wondered when you would come.””
That sentence bothered me.
“You knew?””
“I knew eventually you would discover the truth.””
I sat down.
“Then explain.””
Thomas sighed.
For the first time, I saw how tired he was.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Told me what?””
He looked at the family portrait on the wall.
Your father knew someone wanted Ashcroft Holdings.
I froze.
“What?””
“He discovered it before he died.””
My voice lowered.
“Who?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Richard Whitmore.””
I felt anger rise.
“Then why didn’t my father tell me?””
“Because he was afraid.””
That answer surprised me.
“My father wasn’t afraid of anything.””
Thomas smiled sadly.
“He was afraid of losing you.””
I said nothing.
“He knew Richard was patient. Dangerous people usually are.””
Thomas continued.
“Your father believed Richard would wait until you were vulnerable.””
“And he was right.””
Thomas nodded.
“When your father died, Richard changed his strategy.””
“To Adrian.””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
Everything connected.
Adrian’s ambition.
Vanessa’s arrival.
The company’s internal problems.
The media attack.
It had all been part of one plan.
Thomas looked at me.
“I tried to warn Adrian.””
My eyes opened.
“You did?””
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
Thomas looked away.
“He thought I was jealous.””
Of course.
Adrian had believed everyone who questioned him was against him.
“He trusted Richard instead.””
“Yes.””
I stood.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Thomas looked hurt.
“Because your father made me promise.””
“What?””
“He told me not to interfere unless you were ready.””
I stared at him.
“That sounds like him.””
Thomas smiled.
“He knew you were stronger than people believed.””
I looked down.
For years, I thought my father had left me alone.
But maybe he had been preparing me all along.
That night, I made a decision.
I called a private meeting.
Everyone came.
Thomas.
Adrian.
Marcus.
Claire.
People who represented different pieces of the puzzle.
Different parts of the truth.
I stood at the head of the table.
“For years, someone has been trying to take control of this company.””
Nobody spoke.
“They used Adrian.””
Adrian looked down.
“They used Vanessa.””
A painful expression crossed his face.
“They used me.””
I placed the documents on the table.
“And they almost succeeded.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Who is behind it?””
I looked around the room.
“We don’t know yet.””
Adrian frowned.
“But we know it’s someone close.””
“Yes.””
Thomas spoke quietly.
“And they know how Ashcroft operates.””
I nodded.
The room became silent.
Because everyone understood.
The enemy was not outside.
They were watching.
May you like
Waiting.
And they knew our every move.
